The Coastal Pavilion Retreat In Coles Bay

The Freycinet National Park in Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places for retreat and relaxation in the whole planet, especially if you’re looking to detoxify your body of the ills and troubles brought about by living in the city for so long.

Make no mistake, though. This place isn’t just for taking a break from the city life. Instead, it’ll actually help you reconnect with nature on a molecular level, and perhaps even usher you to a new understanding of what it means to be outdoors.

One of the best tourism fronts in the area is Freycinet Lodge, and they run the Coastal Pavilion in Coles Bay, which sits on the east coast of Apple Isle. It’s a retreat that perfectly integrates man-made comforts into the forest setting.

It’s not that large, it should be noted, but its relatively quaint space makes the whole area feel more personal and less convoluted. You’ll find a king bed, a huge deck with a hammock jutting out just below it, an outdoor bath, and more. The point of this space, apart from connecting with nature, is for guests to have as much privacy as possible and immerse themselves in the outdoor life for as long as they need.

The Freycinet National Park in general is one of those “you must go see before you die” type of places, and we’re not exaggerating when we say that it is simply one of the best retreat locations if you ever find yourself sick of the city life. Suppose you’re planning to go, you should really consider booking a stay in Coastal Pavilion.

The NoMad Hotel Comes To Las Vegas

NoMad has finally opened up shop in Las Vegas, marking the third properly in the luxury hotel collection thus far. If you’ve already been in Las Vegas, you probably know just how many hotels there are in Sin City. However, very few of them offer something for folks who don’t want the standard Vegas treatment.

Enter NoMad, which delivers a much more refined option than the usual fare. Hidden inside Park MGM, the NoMad hotel obviously has its own casino inside, but it’ll be unlike the hundreds, if not thousands, of casinos you’ll find peppered throughout the city. It will have a much more intimate affair with a focus on high limit Roulette, Blackjack, and Baccarat. You’ll also be served crafted cocktails from Leo Robitschek, and be able to bask in an ambience inspired by European casinos.

The NoMad Hotel is fairly large. There will be 293 rooms available for booking, each one designed by legendary architect Jacques Garcia. They’ll contain, among other things, custom furnishings, curated artwork by Paris design studio, be-poles, and freestanding pedestal bathtubs. The smallest one will have around 406 square feet of space, while the priciest ones can reach a whopping 2,000 square feet of luxurious space.

The hotel’s restaurant is scheduled to open in November. It will mainly serve American dishes, courtesy of chef Daniel Humm’s menu. The NoMad Bar will also offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There will also be live jazz in the evenings. You can check out NoMad Las Vegas’ website now to see rooms available for booking.

Royal Huisman Pura Sailing Yacht

Dutch shipmaker Royal Huisman and naval architect Mani Frers’ latest collaboration involves letting customers build their own yacht. Granted, much of the ship will have been built beforehand, but it’s up to you to work with Frers to come up with designs for the hull shape, deck, and superstructure.

An insane proposition, not unlike designing a house with Frank Lloyd Wright himself, you’ll have “almost unlimited potential” to create the yacht that suits your vision. Frers will provide drawings throughout the entire collaboration, including different bow and stern profiles and hull sheer and superstructure designs to help put your yacht dreams into paper.

As much as the exterior of the Royal Huisman Pura is customizable, expect to have the same level when it comes to the interior as well. Frers will give you up to three possibilities for the interior layout, but you’ll still have a completely blank canvas so you’ll be able to have at it with the design. If anything, go berserk — Frers will do his best to create anything you dream up. Maybe. Whatever the result, the interior should provide enough space for up to right guests and six crew members, not including the smattering of high-end furniture you plan to throw in, of course.

The number of possibilities with the Royal Huisman Pura are daunting, but we wouldn’t worry one bit. After all, Frers will be by your side the whole process, and he’s one of the best naval architects in the world right now. Plus, don’t forget that at the end of the day, you’ll have a Royal Huisman-stamped ship.

2D Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20

The Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 in South Korea makes you feel like you have been transported into a different world the moment you walk inside. Its interior decorations and furnishings have been rendered into 2D. It makes you feel like you have stepped into a comic book illustration.

This quaint establishment only has two tables inside and a few more outside, but it is definitely Instagram-worthy. Except for some potted plants and maybe the sumptuous food that you order, the entire place is totally devoid of color.

Instead, this trendy cafe features all-white walls while dark black lines adorn the walls, the ceiling, and even the tiles on the floor. Likewise, black lines contour the chairs, tables, mugs, and plates to create the flattened look of a drawing.

A few plants and flowers provide table accents but they can only do so much in creating a different vibe. You still feel like you’re in a 2D painting or in a cartoon environment. Even the hand-drawn images further amp up the 2D optical illusion.

The Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 opened in 2017. It took its design inspiration from a Korean TV show called WTwo Worlds. The series tells the story of a woman who walked into a comic illustration and fell in love with a man from that fantasy world.

Dubbed as “the world’s first smartphone photography bag,” it caters to the smartphone photography and videography enthusiasts. This bag has dedicated compartments to stash add-on lenses and it even has QI-wireless charging capability to power your smartphones for an extensive photo day.

nCamp Compact Camping Stove

Compact, portable stoves are one of the most essential things you can bring to a camping trip. At just two pounds, the nCamp is probably the best choice. Especially if you just want a simple and basic wood-burning stove. One that sheds away the niceties usually tacked onto more expensive options.

What’s impressive is that its construction primarily features steel and aluminum. It even collapses down after you use it. That brings its total thickness to just 1.5 inches (about the size of a paperback book). That’s crucial because you need to be carrying this around for most of your camping adventures, and you definitely don’t want something bulky, heavy, and a pain to lug around.

The nCamp stove burns readily available twigs and other forest combustible materials. Meaning, it eliminates packaging and trash associated with propane or canned fuel. In case you were wondering: Yup, you can also burn liquid or solid fuel with this bad boy.

The idea to make nCamp came when founder Dan Cuffaro, himself an avid backpacker and a professor of industrial design, decided to use his expertise in product design to make a stove that’s both sturdy and easy to carry.

“Our design transformed the common bulky combustion chamber into one that is modeled on a traditional collapsible camping cup,” says Cuffaro.

The stove is on sale for $45 (original price is $50) on Amazon at the time of writing, so you better act fast if you want a trusty compact stove that’s super portable, sturdy, and is also eco-friendly at the same time.

Top 14 Electric Skateboards & Longboards Of 2019

W

hen we were at school only the cool kids truly conquered the art of skateboarding, but getting up to high speeds was more or less impossible for anyone. You may have looked at the Hover Boards in Back to the Future II enviously, we know we did. However, there’s something that’s even better known as electric skateboards.

With larger versions known as longboards, electric skateboards take cool and crank it up a notch. Forget about getting stuck in traffic on the way to work – what better way to arrive than on an electric skateboard?

In the past, electric motors were clunky and awkward, offering very little power or charge. They’d even take up a large amount of space. Fast-forward to today and you’ll find things are very different. Motors have been streamlined and now sit snugly on a board without creating an ugly lump.

The power issue has been sorted too – jump on a board and discover for yourself just how fast they can really go! You’ll get a good charge on an electric board too, it’s not going to run out after a couple of blocks. You might not go from the East to the West coast, but you’ll get a good distance on these things.

Inside we’re all still that gawky schoolkid who just wants to spend time hanging with his skateboard and looking cool. However, electric skateboards give you a chance to try the cool life once more. With just a flick of a wheel on your remote you’ll be on your way and with cruise control, all you need to do is stay onboard.

Using electric skateboards are so easy that within a few blocks you’ll be feeling like Tony Hawk in Pro Skater!

What are the main things to consider when buying electric skateboards or longboards?

If you’re want to get started and have seen a board you like, don’t take the plunge before you’ve done your homework. Not all electric skateboards are alike and there are some that are less than perfect.

The first thing to look at is the max weight capacity of the board, particularly if you’re a larger guy. Some boards have relatively low limits, so if you’re much bigger you won’t get the performance you hoped for. Bigger motors can help so that’s another top tip.

This can prevent the board from burning out under the stress of a smaller motor that might be working at its limit constantly.

What you’re going to use the board to do will be important. For example, are you planning on shredding it around the park or cruising to work each day? Look at the range you need. This is how far the board can travel before it needs to be charged again.

The length of time taken to charge could be a factor if you’re hoping to juice up in the middle of the day. Some boards will be ready to hit the streets in less than two hours while others take much longer.

Some boards cope with hills without flinching while others will end up being carried while you trudge up the incline. Depending on where you live this may or may not be an issue. If you live in hilly San Fran or Seattle, you might want to check out the hill capacity of the board.

Don’t forget to look at the weight of electric skateboards too. If you do end up carrying it you won’t want it to be too heavy.

What is the average speed of electric skateboards and longboards?

Sadly, there’s no simple or straightforward answer to this one. The truth is that there are just so many variables with electric skateboards that it’s unfair to compare many models on speed. It’s just like regular skateboards, they come in all shapes and sizes. Some state the comfortable speed they can go while others may not.

For example, a lightweight model won’t have the capacity to accommodate a meaty motor. This means it won’t be able to reach the top speeds of the bigger models. Conversely, larger and heavier boards will have more weight to drag around that ultimately will impact how fast they can go.

Some boards are built for long ranges, others are designed for tricks. That means asking about an average speed doesn’t really tell you much at all.

However, it is possible to describe the types of speeds you might find on various boards, to give you an idea whether the model you’re looking at measures up. Electric skateboards and longboards designed for beginners will be slower, with a top speed typically of 9-11mph.

As the power increases, the spec improves. The top speed will then rise to 15-25mph. You won’t really find any mainstream electric skateboards in the United States with a top speed above this.

Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, there are a few features that define a longboard and these can determine speed. A larger and more aerodynamic body and bigger wheels help the wheels to rotate quicker, providing those all-important top speeds.

What are the safety considerations when buying electric skateboards or longboards?

In the old days, you probably grabbed your skateboard and headed out without a second thought. However, with electric skateboards, you need to take a little more care. It’s easy to view an e-board in the same way as a traditional skateboard but the power and speed involved mean it’s a very different beast.

Step onto an electronic board for the first time and you’ll realize what we mean – just a click of the remote and the board starts to surge under your feet. It takes a while to practice your technique and if you have an accident at speed, trust us, it’s going to hurt.

That’s why if you ever head out with an electric skateboard you’ll need to use protection. No, not that kind! We’re talking about a helmet, along with wrist, elbow, and knee protection too. There are a few different types and not everyone likes them all so it’s a good idea to head down to your local shop and try some styles out.

The important thing is that you feel comfortable while being protected. Don’t risk becoming seriously injured for the sake of not strapping on your helmet.

Now that you’re all tooled up with the latest facts and info about electric skateboards, it’s time to meet the contenders!

1) Boosted 2nd Gen Black Dual+ Electric Skateboard

The Boosted brand is one of the biggest names on the skateboarding scene and with the 2nd Gen Dual+ they’ve released a board that’s hard to beat. The first version of this board was a market leader in many ways, introducing hordes of newbies to the delights of boarding electric-style.

However, the guys down at Boosted weren’t happy to rest on their laurels. They have been hard at work creating a new, improved version. Enter the 2nd Gen.

At a glance, the 2nd Gen looks pretty much like the first board with its black bamboo base and orange wheels. However, if you scratch below the surface, you’ll see even more impressive features. The Dual+ has the capacity to get up even steep inclines of up to 25%.

This is thanks to the two 1000-watt motors that lurk underneath.

The Bluetooth remote means you’ll always feel in control while the 80mm wheels provide accurate carving left and right. You’ll only get 7 miles out of a single charge but Boosted is working on an upgrade that should be available anytime soon.

9) Lou 2.0 Electric Skateboard

For the ultimate combination of lightweight design and optimum performance, enter the Lou 2.0. A shortboard that’s versatile in every way, the Lou is great when used for commuting, practicing tricks, or just cruising around town. At just over 9lbs the Lou is one of the lightest electric boards around.

This is great for if/when you need to pick it up and carry it, meaning you won’t be lugging around a huge weight.

In this board, you’ll have the advantage of hub motors rather than the belt drives used in older designs. For those unaware, this has the advantage of delivering the power directly to the wheels. Thus, it makes it feel far more like an authentic skateboard ride than other boards may provide.

The downside of this compact board is that it’s smaller in size. Of course, that means less room for a better motor. This also sadly results in getting only get 9 miles per charge.

At Men’s Gear, we don’t recommend you ride your board in a serious downpour unless you enjoy face-planting in a puddle. However, the Lou is waterproof and dust-proof so getting caught in a shower won’t do any harm.

The Campus 2 electric skateboards are aimed at beginners so you won’t find a board that’s loaded up with supercharged extras or extreme speed. What you do get is a solid and dependable electric skateboard. One that provides riders the ability to handle low to medium speeds.

This allows people to know how to handle higher speeds later on.

The clue is perhaps in the name as it’s a board that’s perfect to ride around campus, or at the park. Aimed at younger and/or newer riders, it’s lightweight and convenient to carry around.

The Campus 2 board has a relatively good range at 13 miles, and can even climb hills up to 14%. That said, you’ll need two hours to charge it up before you can go out to play again. The maximum capacity for this board is on the low side at just 150lbs which is something for larger-framed riders to be aware of.

Switching from the belt system to a hub motor means the wheels receive the power directly. It’s a far more enjoyable and authentic skateboarding experience for the rider. There’s a thicker base, giving it more firmness, with 8-ply rather than the usual 7-ply. All sandwiching within 6 layers of maple wood and bamboo on the top and bottom.

Appearance is a big thing for Blitzart and they offer the choice of four different colors for the wheels together with other accessories you can customize. The lines are fluid with a pleasing concave shape that not only looks the part but also helps your feet to stay in the proper position too.

The fiberglass, foam, and poplar core composition dampens down unwanted vibrations. This offers a smooth ride even over rougher terrain. The Stealth can whizz up hills of 25% without a problem and there’s a real grip about the wheels.

Regenerative braking helps to boost the battery to squeeze out a bit more on the distance end of things. Meanwhile, Pro and Expert modes seem to produce the best overall fuel economy.

These Stealth electric skateboards are a thing of beauty with many features to admire. It is worth mentioning that, compared to many other longboards, it’s a lot more expensive. You’ll have to decide whether the extra bucks are worth paying for the features you’ll get in return. To us, it’s certainly worth what it asks.

13) Inboard M1™ Electric Skateboard

For a futuristic-looking board, the M1™ from Inboard is a top pick. Though it’s not quite as great as those amazing hoverboards from Back to the Future II, it is a close second. There’s a hi-tech vibe about the M1™ due to the lack of visible motors.

Integrated LED lights kind of add to the appeal as well as offering a safety element when riding after sundown. The core is made from flexible wood and surrounded with fiberglass. This mimics the design of some of the premium snowboards. All of this creates a truly superior ride.

Be warned, however, that this is a board truly made for grownups.

A powerful 1600w motor provides a top speed of 22mph. You’ll barely notice the hills as you glide effortlessly around the city. However, make sure you don’t venture too far because there’s only a disappointing 7 miles range per charge. The compatible Vision Mobile app provides information and insights.

This offers a way for the board to be future-proofed via regular firmware updates. Boarding planes with electric skateboards have, up until now, been a bit of a gray area. However, the M1™ has been approved for flying! This means you can board with complete confidence.

Take your board oversees and extend your riding experience to the max!

14) Hover-1 Cruze Electric Skateboard

Many want to buy one of those electric skateboards on the market. However, many people want something completely different. If that’s you, we feel you’ve found what you’re looking for in the Cruze from Hover-1. Unlike the other electric skateboards on our list, you won’t need to ride while gripping onto a remote.

All the controls are managed via a clever foot sensor. This frees up your hands, making it comfortable to ride while still leaving you in control.

The concept was dreamed up by a teenager who couldn’t figure out the awkward hand remote. The teen didn’t like the jerky acceleration that’s often a feature of remote control boards. Hover-1 decided to make the change, all found in the Cruze.

You simply move the Cruze up through the three separate levels by stepping on a sensor. This sits at the back of the board for proper aide. Two beeps will sound to confirm the move has been executed successfully. There’s no need to try and squint at a tiny screen while the board is in motion.

You can choose cruise control, which keeps the board at the same speed. However, if you’re feeling confident, you can try the more challenging Braking Mode. In this mode, you press the sensor in the same way as a car accelerator. This makes the board simply speed up or slow down.

It’s not all sunshine with the Cruze. Sadly, it’s only able to reach a range of 9 miles and a top speed of just over 11mph. However, unlike many of the other electric skateboards, when you’re out of juice you can simply ride it like a regular skateboard, old-school style.

Ferretti Yachts 920

The “Tai He Ban,” a maxi-flybridge model from Ferretti Yachts, spent so little time without a buyer during its Hong Kong showcase. Its sensational entertaining areas and sophisticated interior furnishings were all the convincing the present owner needed to snap this one up to his collection in no time at all.

This is the Ferretti Yachts 920. It shows a unique blend of utilitarian spaces and posh interiors. That and it also highlights the shipmaker’s attempts at naval innovation. They have spent over 50 years in the business building exemplary yachts, and its dedication to craftsmanship, build quality, design, makes us think it will be a mainstay in the yacht world.

The Ferretti 920’s exterior and interior styling was a collaboration between the Ferretti Group and the Studio Zuccon International Project. It’s boasting an all-new hull that was built in Ferretti Yachts’ shipyards in Cattolica, Italy. The raised height of the bow is another immediate highlight, giving the yacht an imposing presence on the water. Detailing on the bulwarks continue this brutal aesthetic. You can see them peppered throughout the 920, from the walkways to the windows in the master cabin.

Up top inside the interior you’ll find a ceiling backlighting system that gives the Ferretti Yachts 920 a more contemporary feel. It also proves a sharp contrast to the aggressive design. And while the outside may seem intimidating, the inside is a whole other story. You get wrap-around windows. Plus veneer finishes with textures that accentuate the depth of the spaces. you’ll love the anthracite-oak wood parquet flooring. And the built-in furniture upholstered in grey rock leather. And so many more elements that give the interior space much-needed warmth and elegance.

Solar Impact Yacht

If your ambition is to sail across the globe on an electric-powered vessel minus the need to dock and charge throughout the journey, then this environmentally-friendly machine is just what you need. The Solar Impact, designed by Marlena Ratajska of Schaaf Yachtbau Gmbh & Co KG, is equipped to travel the seas with the aid of sunlight. This 78-foot watercraft weight 70 tons and features an aluminum hull and a futuristic appearance. Additionally, everything seems straight out of a science fiction movie.

It gathers all the energy it needs through the integrated solar panels spread across the entirety of the ship. To be specific, it covers around 300 square meters and charges an 800kWh battery. Once fully charged, the power source can supply up to 10 hours of cruising. The twin electric motors produce 500kW each for a total of 1,000kW or an estimated 1,341 horsepower.

Relying only on electricity, the cutting-edge motors deliver a top speed of up to 22 knots. Just in case stormy weather threatens to intercept your plotted course, a pair of 87-horsepower diesel engines is on standby whenever you need it. Below deck, you will find four guest cabins, one master, and another for the crew. The Solar Impact Yacht seems to be an innovative step for shipbuilders who want to significantly reduce the pollution produced by conventional vessels.

That’s where you’ll find the BrewDog OverWorks brewery and its one-of-a-kind boutique hotel. It’s remarkable to find out that this venture started out as a Kickstarter project. Most people continue to wonder if the brewer really intended to put it as a business. Maybe, it’s just as a publicity stunt to hype up the Scottish craft beer brand. Either way, we’re glad that it’s here and open to serve weary and thirsty customers.

With everything themed around the amber brew, it’s a beer lover’s paradise on earth. It’s only second to having access to a free-flowing tap of delicious craft beer. On second thought, it ticks all the right boxes. That’s because each of the 32 rooms within the DogHouse Columbus hotel comes equipped with in-room taps.

From the moment you check in, the lobby bartender will eagerly serve you a complimentary sample. All the bells and whistles that you would expect from a classy hotel are available. These include 42-inch smart TVs, free Wi-Fi, rainfall showers, and pillow-top mattresses.

Bawah Reserve In Indonesia’s Anambas Archipelago

The Bawah Reserve is the only known resort on the remote Anambas Archipelago of Indonesia. Its 13 lush beaches offer a level of sanctuary that you won’t find anywhere else in the country.

Any entrepreneur would milk this reserve for profits, of course. However, Matt Chapman, the owner, seems like he doesn’t want to do that. In fact, he wants Bawah to be a space where people can feel the rush and surprise of exploration.

“We want every guest to feel like an explorer stepping foot on the island for the first time,” he says. The terrain, marked by tropical vegetation and clear, turquoise waters, served as an inspiration for the resort. The designers sought to make everything by hand. That includes the 11 overwater bungalows and beach and garden suites, using mostly using bamboo harvested from Java and driftwood.

Elsewhere, you’ll find Lychee wood counters, freestanding copper bathtubs and sinks, plus rattan accents all over — a nod to the islands’ sprightly and exotic ecology. You’ll also find splashes of green and blue throughout, supposed to highlight “the relationship between the property and the land in a way that draws upon whimsical interpretations of the sea,” according to Eco.id founding partner and director Sim Boon Yang.

With the whole property set on a marine preserve, visitors can partake in a variety of outdoor adventures, like kayaking, trekking, snorkeling, diving, island-hopping. After a day’s exhausting but fulfilling bout of roughhousing in the wilderness, you can just relax on one of the reserve’s pristine white-sand beaches. We don’t need to say more, though. We’re betting you’ve already booked a trip here.

Tourists Hotel

On a lush property in the small town of North Adams sits the Tourists Hotel, a quaint and intimate 48-room inn much like the roadside lodges you see in old films.

Except this little hotel is affixed with modern niceties that elevate its American motor lodge aesthetic from a simple nostalgia fest to a respectable blend of past and present — it offers us to look backward through the lens of modern-day sophistication.

If you happen to pass by Mohawk Trail, a road in western Massachusetts that opened in 1914 and is among America’s oldest scenic byways, you’ll find the Tourists Hotel cinched between a bucolic blanket of vegetation. The U-shaped space features low-slung bars surrounding a central courtyard with native flora. The white oak facades are a sight to behold. Plus, the structure itself is a fine example of the beauty in integrating architecture into the surrounding woods.

Each guest room has high ceilings, king-sized beds, and built-in lounge furniture for reading and napping. Families and larger groups are more than welcome as well, as several rooms offer lofted bunks. Each also has an advanced air-circulation system that replaces the air every hour. This apparently brings “the Berkshire outdoors into the space year-round.”

Outside, you’ll find a saltwater swimming pool and a deck overlooking the Hoosic River. Go a bit further and you’ll end up on the Farmhouse. Built in 1813, it still stands to offer cocktails and live music to guests. Find comfort in the cozy ranch-style common room that features a fireplace, and take a few steps to reach the patio overlooking the wetlands. Whether you prefer being alone or meeting other “tourists,” this is the place to be.

Sun City Camp, Jordan

Sure, we’ve made so many strides toward deeper space exploration. And though Elon Musk and a lot of other rich billionaires want us humans to venture farther out at some point, we’re not reaching Mars anytime soon. Wadi Rum, Jordan is a close second, though.

In Wadi Rum desert there’s the Sun City Camp, where you’ll definitely want to go if you want the closest Mars-like experience on Earth. It’s designed to mimic the alien experience one would have if they find themselves suddenly stranded in the Red Planet. Set on red-dirt land, it features a smattering of space camp-like Bedouin-style tents. Needless to say they look incredibly out of this world.

Those geodesic “Martian Domes” were apparently modelled after the Buckminster Fuller’s famous design. Inside each you’ll find a terrace, a private bathroom, and a king-sized or double bed. You’ll also be facing a tall stack of windows overlooking the red terrain outside.

In that regard, the Sun City Camp almost seems like a remote neighborhood set up by the first set of humans on Mars. Just forget for one second that it’s a glamping hotel in the middle of nowhere and imagine that you, along with a bunch of other people, happened to meet on the Red Planet, set up camp, and slowly but surely eked out a fully operational community. There are so many scientific gaps in this train of logic, but who cares — just pretend you’re on Mars, silly. Forget the rest.
