Buying Smart Light Bulbs for the First Time? Here’s What You Need to Know

The first thing to know is that, compared to other smart home tech, smart light bulbs are simple. They’re almost exactly the same as conventional LED bulbs, but with a whole host of added benefits.

The Advantages of a Smart Bulb

You can do a host of other neat things with smart light bulbs that you simply can’t conventional LED bulbs, too. Most of them have to do with control.

Remote control: You can turn smart lights on or off even if you’re not home. All you need to do is have your smartphone connected to Wi-Fi or LTE, and a compatible smart home app at the ready.

Create schedules: You don’t need to turn your lights on or off manually. With schedules you can set them to turn off or on (or otherwise change their settings, at a certain time every day or night. If you have multiple smart lights you can have them all set to the same or different schedules, too.

Create scenes: A “scene” or “room” in the context of a smart home is a group of devices all working together. For example, you can group the three smart light bulbs that are located in your bedroom together, name them “Bedroom,” and then turn them all on or off with a single voice command: “Hey Google, turn off bedroom lights.”

Brightness control: Not every smart light bulb is dimmable, but many are. Dimmable smart light bulbs are neat because you can adjust the brightness without having to adjust a physical dimmer. You can adjust it via an app or using voice commands.

Energy efficient: The vast majority of modern light bulbs are LEDs, and that includes most smart light bulbs. They’re naturally more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, but the fact that they’re smart means you can always check on them; if you’ve left a light on by accident, you can turn it off from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or LTE connection.

What to Look Out For

There are many different smart light bulbs that you can choose from in 2020. Not all of them work the same way or have the same capabilities, however. Here are some common questions to ask when considering your choice.

Does it need a hub? Some smart lights connect directly to your home’s Wi-Fi network so  you can easily control them straight from your smartphone or with a voice assistant. Others, require an extra piece of hardware, like a hub or a bridge, to do the exact same thing. Knowing if the smart lights will need extra hardware, which also adds an extra expense, is one of the most important things before investing in smart lights.

Is it compatible with your other gear? The other big important thing to consider before buying a smart light bulb is knowing whether it will work with your home’s smart ecosystem. Not every smart light is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s HomeKit, the Google Assistant or IFTTT, so you need to check beforehand.

What do you want for light color and temperature: If you’re willing to spend a little more, you can buy smart lights that have various colors and temperature effects. For instance, Philips Hue’s White And Color Ambiance smart bulbs can shine in millions of different colors and various shades of white light. These smart lights can also adjust the temperature of the light throughout the day, which can help you better wake up or fall asleep.

Smart Lights or Smart Switches/Outlets: Which to Choose?

Smart lights are great smart home products but they aren’t great in every scenario. For example, an area in your home that has multiple lights controlled by a single light switch probably isn’t a great situation for smart lights. A better solution for such a scene, like a large family room with lots of overhead lighting, would be to buy a smart switch instead, such as the Wemo Light Switch, instead.

Smart switches are generally a little cheaper and can be used to control the “dumb” lights that you already have. This also means that you can use smart switches to control any light bulb. On the downside, smart switches usually require more installation — typically some light wire-work — and they can’t be used to create scenes. While most smart light switches are able to dim the lights, they definitely can’t adjust the color or temperature like you’re able to with a lot of smart light bulbs.

The Best Smart Bulbs You Can Buy Right Now

Philips Hue White

Best Starter Bulbs: Philips Hue makes the most popular smart bulbs. The company’s “White” smart bulbs can’t produce the many shades of color as the “White and Color Ambiance” smart bulbs, but they’re cheaper, still dimmable and work in much the same way.

Compatibility: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant
Smart Hub? Optional

Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance

Best Multi-Color Bulbs: These are the best option for people who really want to play around with all the customization options smart bulbs have to offer. Like the company’s “White” bulbs, they work with pretty much smart home ecosystem and you can control them with your voice. The big upside with them is that, via the app, you can adjust the smart lights to change to one of 16 million colors and shades of white. The downside is that you need to use the Hue smart hub (included in the starter pack) to get the most out of them.

Compatibility: Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Samsung SmartThings
Smart Hub? Yes

Wyze Bulb

Best Budget Bulbs: At just $8 a piece and even cheaper in packs, you’re not going to find a more affordable smart bulb than the Wyze Bulb. And it’s actually pretty versatile to boot. It’s compatible with both Amazon’s and Google’s smart speakers. You can adjust its brightness and color temperatures (from warm to cool). And if you use Wyze’s other smart home products, you can have the Wyze Bulbs perform tricks like lighting up when certain sensors are triggered, like when motion is detected by a Wyze Cam.

Compatibility: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT
Smart Hub? No

Ikea Tradfri

Best Decorative Bulbs: Ikea’s first smart filament light bulb is beautiful, dimmable and relatively affordable. Its tinted glass helps create a warm, moody light. The only downside is that you’ll need to buy a smart hub, the Tradfri gateway ($35), to get the most out of it, such as the ability to control with voice controls or work with Ikea’s ecosystem of smart home products (consisting of motion sensors, LED light bulbs and some light panels).

Compatibility: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit)

Sean Woolsey Smart Desk

If you want up your desk game, you should check out Sean Woolsey’s latest addition. Its smart desk, at first glance, doesn’t look like most options on the market today. Designed to blend with most office environments, it boasts a chic, svelte profile with American Black Walnut Wood that screams modern.

Beyond just looks, however, the desk is designed to help you work a lot more productively. Most significant of its feature set is an integrated wireless charging surface, allowing you to plop your phone down and let it load up as you work. What ff your phone doesn’t support wireless charging? No problem. There are cable slots in both the left and right drawers for wired charging, too.

The desk also features a cable management system underneath. It boasts a surge protector with six outlets and two USB ports for all your devices. Within the right drawer, you’ll find a magnetized power unit. And there’s also a black walnut desk accessory organizer to utilize either in a drawer or on the desktop.

Sean Woolsey thought about the noise while designing this desk, which is why the company added an electric dual motor system. It runs smoothly and effortlessly, and makes very little noise, on top of which. There’s a remote that includes four stop locations for you to set your preferred height. There’s also a motor for anti-collision and safety.

It seems the only downside is there are no USB Type-C ports to be found, now largely the preferred port of most modern phones. A minor blemish, surely, but one that could break this deal for you. Hit the link below for more details.

50+ Best Smart Home Gadgets

Several years ago, the promise of smart home was just that — a “promise.” Now, hooking up your household with the best home automation system is very much a reality. Not only that, setting up smart home gadgets is also super easy once you acquire the right tools.

A smart home, in the general sense, means a “connected” home. And for your house to be smart, it needs smart home gadgets, of course. Because there’s been a smart home boom in the last couple of years, most elements inside and outside the house, like lights, garage doors, thermostats, now have smart home variants. If not, there are accessories that turn “dumb” house fixtures into ones that can communicate with each other via a “hub.” This allows users to them to control them remotely. It also paves the way for devices to be part of an automation system.

Each smart home is different depending on your preferences. And how connected you want your house to be. But in general, a smart home lets you access, control, and change house functions at any moment’s notice from the comfort of your, say, bedroom.

Want to see your porch’s CCTV video feed on your tablet? You can. Want to turn off the lights but you’re too tired to get up from your bed? Easy — and you don’t even have to move an inch, just say it. Want your phone to automatically turn off its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you scramble out the door? That’s possible, too.

As you can see, smart home gadgets are about more than just convenience. They also give you a chance to intuitively take charge of your entire household. Smart home gadgets can also aid in saving energy, knowing when someone is attempting to break in, or alerting you to all sorts of potential emergencies.

The best part is these gadgets are getting cheaper and easier to acquire over time. Below are some of the best smart home gadgets we could find. Some are must-haves — you can’t really call your house a smart home without them. Some are cool, but skippable — they’re nice to have, but you can probably live without them. But each is useful in its own way.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We are constantly updating this list as new smart home products get announced or released, so it might be a good idea to bookmark this page.

It’s like the what the Swiss Army Knife is to the world of everyday carry — an awesome starting point that will lead you other, more complex smart home gadgets.

The Amazon Echo is a smart speaker that features a digital voice assistant called Alexa, which you invoke by simply saying, “Alexa.” It does a lot of things, and we put it on top of this list because you can integrate it with a lot of the stuff elsewhere in this list. Like the Amazon Echo, the Samsung SmartThings hub is one of the holy grail items in smart home gadgets. It acts like a “hub” to which all your other wireless smart home accessories can connect, and thus be controlled. You can pair it with lightbulbs, speakers, doors, and cameras, from over 40 partner brands.

Then you can teach it automation tricks. You can, for instance, tell it to close all the lights and or turn the thermostat up when you say, “Goodnight.” It’s got 24/7 monitoring so you can be up to date about all the activities in your smart home, which is a really cool feature if there’s something fishy going on at your house. You can also connect it to Google Assistant for voice control.

This is what we mean when we say turning your home into a smart one is super easy these days. You don’t necessarily have to buy smart home products off that bat. Your existing ones can be controlled or monitored through other ways. One of which is by using TP-Link’s Kasa Smart WiFi Plug Mini. This goes on top of your outlet so it can control whatever electronic device is plugged in. It literally converts your outlet into a smart outlet. Works with Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, and Amazon Alexa, so whatever device you have is good to go. It also supports scheduling, so you can set lights off time at whatever hour you prefer.

5MyQ Smart Garage Door Opener

Open and close your garage door from anywhere using the MyQ Smart Garage Door Opener Chamberlain. You can get timely alerts whenever your garage door is opened or closed, so you’ll know if your teenager had snuck out in the middle of the night.

It’s compatible with most garage door brands made after 1993 that have standard safety sensors, so that’s a pretty wide coverage. Pairing the device with Google Assistant requires a fee, though. Even still, it’s one of the best smart home gadgets you can buy, especially if you have people always coming and going through your garage.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro works with Amazon Alexa to send announcements to your Echo-compatible device whenever someone presses the doorbell outside or motion is detected. It allows you to hear and see visitors with two-way talk, which means better overall security against potential break-ins.

You can use your tablet or PC to talk to and view people on the other side of the door. The only downside is that it requires hardware installation since it needs to be connected to existing doorbell wires.

The device works with iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows 10. It supports up to 1080p video feeds so you’ll see with great clarity who’s trying to get in. And should it get stolen, Ring says it’ll give you a replacement completely free of charge.

The Amazon Cloud Cam is a security camera made by Amazon itself, so it’s naturally compatible with Alexa. With it, you can stay on top of what’s happening inside or outside thanks to the 1080p Full HD camera. You can watch, download, and share the last 24 hours of motion-detected video clips free of charge, too. And when the Cloud Cam detects and records activity, it will tell you. Then you can open the companion app and see what it captured.

It also features two-way audio so you can communicate with whoever is on the other side. And because it supports Alexa, you can ask it to display the feed to your, say, Amazon Fire TV, if you have one.

If you want more pizazz when it comes to home lighting, LIFX’s Mini Color Wi-Fi Smart LED Light Bulb is a great choice. Like many others in this list, it works natively with Amazon Alexa. If you’d rather use Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant, that works, too.

This light bulb screws in just like any traditional one. Once that’s done, simply download the app, connect it to Wi-Fi, and you’re all set. You don’t even need a hub for this, either. You can dim the light, change its color, and turn it on or off just with a few taps. It touts an output of 800 lumens, equivalent to a 60W traditional incandescent bulb, but only uses 9W of energy.

This particular package includes one camera kit, but you can order additional cameras if you need more. Place them indoors, outdoors, or anywhere you want security footage of. iRobot’s Braava Jet 240 Superior Robot Mop is an excellent choice because it comes with what the company calls Precision Jet Spray, which uses vibrating and cleaning heads to deal with dirts and stains on your floor.

Most robot vacuums fail at cleaning hard to reach places, but this one can make faintly accessible areas spic and span, including under and around your toilet, corners, below cabinets, and around objects or furniture. It’s super easy to use — just add a pad, press, and it’ll start cleaning. It even automatically selects the appropriate cleaning mode depending on the jet pad type. Slick.

And should it err, you have a whole year’s worth of warranty and money back guarantee to fall back on.

Swidget Modular Smart Outlet

Google might have given up on the idea of modular smartphone, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be other modular things. Swidget, which started life as a Kickstarter campaign, is a modular outlet concept that’s unlike any other smart outlets out there.

If you don’t know what they are, smart outlets are plugs that can communicate with your smartphone in order to control it.

To be clear, smart outlets aren’t a novelty in this day and age. There are excellent choices already available for the smart home-savvy, like the Belkin Wemo Insight Switch. Some people also prefer the Insteon On/Off Outlet. The point is, there are already lots of options.

Swidget, however, is the first one to feature modular outlets. That’s just a fancy word meaning you can take individual pieces and shuffle them around as you please. More notably, Swidget outlets offer more than just basic controls like turning devices on or off. The platform includes a ton of modular inserts that perform a variety of functions.

There’s a modular inset for motion sensing. Then one for detecting carbon monoxide levels in a room. There’s also a modular insert that checks the temperature and humidity of a given area. You’ll find a security camera modular insert as well, and of course, a USB charger. So on and so forth.

The idea is you’ll be able to quickly swap between these modules with minimal friction. The best part? They’ll come in both Wi-Fi and Z-Wave versions. The Wi-Fi ones are designed to work directly with the companion Swidget app. The Z-Wave ones, however, require a compatible smart home hub like SmartThings.

Plume SuperPod Mesh Wi-Fi System

Plume’s new SuperPod mesh Wi-Fi system gives you powerful tri-band Wi-Fi, MU-MIMO data streaming, increased data rates, and an extra LAN port. It’s a step up from the decent but lacking Plume Adaptive Wi-Fi System of yesteryear.

The SuperPod comes bundled with three hexagonal pods that you plug directly into an outlet. When plugged in, they provide coverage for the average three- to four-bedroom household, with each pod delivering 30 to 80 feet of Wi-Fi connection. Each pod is a AC3000 tri-band router boasting one 2.4GHz band, two 5GHz bands, a quad-core processor, and a Bluetooth radio. Each has two gigabit LAN ports, a tiny status LED, and a two-prong plug.

Like the original Plume devices, the SuperPod uses Plume’s Adaptive Wi-Fi technology that analyzes a household’s network. Why, you ask? Well it does this so as to optimize bandwidth allocation based on client demand. However, you’ll have to pay a separate fee to get extra features. These include things like like parental controls, guest networking, internet speed testing, device monitoring, and many others. You can pay a yearly fee of $60 to get these extra features. Alternatively, you can pay $200 upfront for a lifetime membership. That’s of course on top of the SuperPod trio’s cost, which will run you $400.

If you do purchase it, you can easily set up the mesh Wi-Fi network using the Plume companion app, available for both iOS and Android. Aside from setup, it will also allows you to monitor a bunch of different stats, like your network status, network speed, daily reports, and information about connected devices.

Lockly Door Lock With Fingerprint Scanner

Here’s something new: a smart lock with a built-in fingerprint scanner from Lockly called Secure Plus, which uses a 3D fingerprint sensing technology (combined with specialized algorithm-based passcode tech) to make your door “virtually impenetrable.”

That’s a pretty bold claim from what’s an otherwise unknown smart home security company, but also intriguing. The smart lock itself comes in two styles, deadbolt and latch. You need a fingerprint to open it, of course. However, it will still grant you access via a physical key in case of a network problem.

That won’t really be necessary, though. Lockly says its smart lock can generate multiple access codes without the need for an internet connection. There are many smart locks in the market, each with their own gimmick, but we have to say that this, by far, is the most ambitious.

Another thing that separates it from the rest is its OLED screen and passcode-entry display. You’ll find four circles with three numbers each, and the digits move around with each use. This way, someone who, for example, might be surreptitiously watching you from a distance won’t be allowed to just casually open the door after a guest leaves. What’s more, it also has a do not disturb mode that will only let people enter with a physical key.

You can store up to 99 fingerprint profiles in the smart lock, and replicated fingerprints or photos can’t fool it. It unlocks only when it confirms a physical match. Users can set both models to auto-lock after a period of time has passed, and you can even set custom codes for guest access.

The deadbolt version is available for $200, while the latch edition will run you $230. The 3D fingerprint reader is an additional $50 for both models. Either model is a pretty great investment, especially since Lockly says Alexa and Google Home integrations are on the cards.

SimpliSafe Home Security

There’s been a boom in home security systems of late, thanks to the increasing number of manufacturers releasing internet-of-things devices. Not to mention major companies like Samsung, Apple, and Google are each buffing up their respective smart home platforms. Ultimately, these developments make it easier for us to integrate security devices into our households.

SimpliSafe isn’t a popular name the landscape just yet. That said, it has plenty to offer for your home security needs. Students from Harvard founded the company 10 years ago in response to apartment break-ins. They wanted to make a proper home monitoring system without the burden of signing contracts. They also didn’t like the idea of altering a property just to install the device.

Their solution? No-contract monitoring with wire-free security systems. Plus an entire lineup of security devices that can be moved from one rental space to another hassle-free. The entire setup includes base stations, entry sensors, motion detectors, high-decibel alarms, glass break sensors, smoke detectors, panic buttons, and an indoor surveillance camera to boot, which pretty much cover the bases.

SimpliSafe is also one of the more affordable out there for homeowners. In a world full of premium options, it’s a decent alternative. Plus, it’s also the easiest to set up and use. There’s one slight downside, however. If you already rely heavily on an existing smart home platform, SimpliSafe might not be the best choice. That’s because syncing devices will prove a bit difficult, if not downright impossible.

Suppose that doesn’t bother you at all, you should definitely go for SimpliSafe. If you’re on the market for a home security system that is easy to install and works out of the box without much hassle. You can browse the company’s website to get information on bundles.
