Jeep Has a New Off-Road Wrangler That’s Both Badass and Affordable

Last summer, Jeep unveiled the Xtreme Recon Package for the Wrangler Rubicon. The package added a 1.5-inch lift and 35-inch tires from the factory rather than going through the aftermarket. The move was an apparent response to Ford offering 35-inch tires with the Bronco’s Sasquatch package. Jeep announced the package just before Bronco reviews were about to drop and tailored it to reclaim the Wrangler’s best-in-class capability; Xtreme Recon gave the Jeep 33.6 inches of water fording to the Bronco’s max 33.5 inches.

Now, you can get the Xtreme Recon package on the Wrangler for a lot cheaper. Jeep just announced it will be available on the 2022 Willy’s Wrangler, a popular, heritage-inspired budget trim starting under $40,000 MSRP for the four-door. Xtreme Recon will be a $3,995 option.

The package for the Willy’s includes 35-inch BF Goodrich KO2 tires, a 1.5-inch suspension lift with uniquely-tuned shocks, 17-inch by 18-inch beadlock capable wheels, swing gate reinforcement, a 4.56:1 axle ratio and anti-lock four-wheel disc performance brakes. The Willy’s Xtreme Recon gets best-in-class approach angle (47.4º), departure angle (40.4º), ground clearance (12.9 in) and water fording (33.6 in).

This package resolves a key pain point for the Wrangler against the Bronco. Ford is offering the off-road-oriented Sasquatch package on the cheapest base model. While before this, Jeep forced you to level up to the Rubicon to get a loaded up off-roader. Adding Xtreme Recon on the Willy’s gives Wrangler buyers a more affordable option to get a lifted, loaded, badass-looking Wrangler from the factory. Viva fierce brand competition.

Alas, there is one catch. Xtreme Recon is only available on the Willy’s with the eTorque 3.6-liter V6, which means you don’t get the six-speed manual transmission as an option.

Jeep says it will begin taking orders for the 2022 Willy’s Xtreme Recon in October 2021. Deliveries will start in December.

5 Takeaways from a Week Living in the Coolest Off-Road Camping Trailer

5. Trailer life can throw you some curveballs

This section is less a commentary on the Black Series per se as it is living with any sort of decent-sized camping trailer, but they’re all lessons learned from spending a week hauling what amounted to a wheeled tiny house across a thousand miles of America.

For one thing, hauling a trailer means you should be prepared to see some terrifying new figures from your trip computer’s fuel economy reading. Adding more than three tons of mass to a truck engine’s workload is bound to make it work harder, but modern pickup motors are potent enough that acceleration is still brisk enough to

The bigger pain, in the long run, comes from the added drag that the trailer brings to the table. Even with the angled front end, the HQ19 presents a big, blocky surface to the wind, forcing the tow vehicle to fight hard to keep up (and also occasionally inducing some nerve-racking oscillations in the trailer). Drag increases faster the quicker you go; jumping from 50 to 60 mph induces more drag than going from 40 to 50, and so forth, so the faster you drive, the faster your fuel economy goes down.

Every F-250 Tremor comes outfitted with the gnarly new Godzilla V8, a 7.3-liter naturally aspirated gasoline-fueled beast that cranks out 430 horses and 475 lb-ft. While normally two of my favorite phrases in the motoring world, though, naturally aspirated and gasoline-fueled are not exactly the ideal for hauling a trailer long distances at more than a mile above sea level.

Thing is, Wyoming interstate’s speed limit is 80 miles per hour, and plenty of cars (and even some semis) like to cruise 5-10 mph over the limit, much like anywhere else. Keep it at 65 for better fuel economy, and you’ll have every other vehicle on the road blasting by like you’re standing still — a scary proposition when about half of those vehicles are eighteen-wheelers.

As a result, the truck/trailer combo’s highway range wound up coming in at just a little over 200 miles. Add in the sporadic nature of gas stations in Wyoming — you can easily go 50 miles or more without seeing one — and the drive left me with a newfound appreciation for what EV drivers have to deal with on long sojourns.

Detaching and re-attaching the trailer — specifically the latter — is its own set of stressors. More than one person half-jokingly told my partner and me some variation of “hooking up trailers can lead to breakups,” and while our relationship made it through fine, it’s certainly easy to see why it could push an unstable marriage straight into divorce court.

Attaching the trailer is by far the trickier of the two, as it requires backing up your tow vehicle to align very precisely with the hitch — a task that requires a spotter (who, of course, is usually a significant other) to direct the driver in. Luckily, modern technology makes this far easier; the indicator line on the F-250’s rearview camera that tells you where the trailer hitch will be made lining it up easy. The hitch that makes the Black Series so capable off-road doesn’t make things easier; while most trailers simply need their hitch to be higher than the ball, the direct attachment of the HQ19 means the trailer and truck need to have their heights exactly matched. Still, the hydraulic jack of the trailer means it’s easy for the spotter to raise or lower it to match the truck on the fly.

Nissan May Have Just Confirmed That a New GT-R Is Happening

The Nissan GT-R, also known as Godzilla, is the Japanese brand’s halo sports car. The current generation was a revelation when it came out. The trouble is it came out back in 2007, the same year Steve Jobs debuted the first iPhone. And while the GT-R once offered supercar performance for a modest price, it now starts off more expensive than a Porsche 911.

Nissan has not announced a next-generation GT-R yet. And its future is open to speculation as Nissan has faced financial problems. They only sell about 300 GT-Rs per year in the U.S. But, as spotted by Motor1, Nissan’s Australian media site may have inadvertently confirmed that a next-generation GT-R is in the works.

Australia is losing the R35 GT-R in November as it no longer meets the country’s crash regulations. A Nissan Australia press release notes that it will be “the last time the current-generation vehicle will be offered” and that “this isn’t the end to the GT-R story in Australia.” If it isn’t the last time the GT-R will be offered, but it’s the last time the current-generation GT-R will be offered, one must rationally conclude there will be a next-gen R36 GT-R.

When the next-generation GT-R would arrive is one issue. A report last year pegged it for 2023. It’s not clear right now where the new GT-R would place on a spectrum between intention and full-on production car. As with the new Z car, expect Nissan to introduce a GT-R concept — of the non-wearable variety — before the production car.

Like the new Z car, another question will be how new an R36 GTR would actually be. However, the same report that pegged the new GT-R for 2023 has it featuring a revolutionary hybrid setup with an F1-like kinetic energy recovery system, which would have a fittingly Godzilla-like impact.

VW Could Revive an Iconic Off-Road Name to Battle the Bronco and Wrangler

1979 harvester scout given new high tech life

Barcroft MediaGetty Images

These are good days for fans of classic off-road badges. Ford resurrected the Bronco. Land Rover brought back the Defender. And now, it seems another iconic SUV nameplate from the 1960s and 1970s could be poised to join them in the intermediate future — as an electric car. Motor Trend is reporting that Volkswagen may revive the International Harvester Scout as an EV off-roader — and it would start a price point where it could rival both the Jeep Wrangler and the Bronco.

Volkswagen can use the name if they want; as it turns out, VW’s truck subsidiary Traton just merged with Navstar, the company that holds the trademark for “Scout.” And VW deploying that name is not just an intriguing hypothetical. There’s some meat behind it.

Per Motor Trend, Volkswagen Group of America COO Johan De Nysschen recently floated the idea of an electric off-roader named the Scout to media members. He was picturing the Scout resembling the Rivian R1S SUV, but at a more affordable $40,000 base price point rather than $70,000 — placing it pretty squarely against the likes of the Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

Such a Scout would likely run on a modified version of the MEB platform with a boxier body style than the ID.4. Motor Trend suggests that VW could build “Scout” into its own sub-brand rather than try to launch, say, the VW Scout. The idea is in the conception stage — Traton and Navastar just completed their merger in July — but one of the virtues of a shared platform like the MEB is supposed to be launching different vehicle variants with relative ease.

More than 70 percent of VW sales in the U.S. are now SUVs. What they are missing — apologies to the reasonably capable Atlas crossover — is a proper off-roader. We’ve seen VW exploring off-roading space stylistically with the Atlas Basecamp concept and technically with the Beach Buggy and the AI:Trail concept. The Scout branding could lend VW heritage and gravitas to better launch itself into that very lucrative (but also competitive) automotive segment.

The 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline Is Gunning for the Jeep Wagoneer

The Expedition Timberline gets some serious power

The Expedition Timberline gets Ford’s high-output twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine from the Lincoln Navigator, which puts out 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. The previous highs available on the Expedition were 400 hp and 480 lb-ft.

The Expedition gets some awesome off-roading capability

More of an on-road person? Check out the new Stealth Performance Package

Ford also has a new Stealth Performance Package for the Limited and Limited Max Expedition. The package, which uses the high-output 3.5-liter V6, offers a sport-tuned suspension for on-road performance. As “stealth” would suggest, there’s a lot of black detailing. The trim provides a gloss-black grille and gloss-black mirror caps, roof rails and running boards. The Stealth Performance Package includes 22-inch premium black aluminum wheels with red brake calipers. There’s even a black Ford emblem.

The Expedition upgrades round out an impressive Ford SUV lineup

Ford has pivoted away from cars, and we’re now seeing the fruits of that in their SUV lineup. Want an off-roader? Ford can now offer seriously capable versions of the Bronco Sport, Bronco and Expedition. Want a green option? Ford has the all-electric Mustang Mach E and hybrid versions of the Escape and Explorer. Need a bit more luxury? You can head over to the Lincoln section and check out the Aviator and Navigator.

Maybe you want a truck instead? Well, Ford does those pretty well too.

The 2023 Ford Ranger: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

We could get a look at Ford’s new truck before the end of the year.

This Camper Van Is Almost Perfect, But There’s a Catch

When it comes time to decide on what sort of camping vehicles to buy (or even to rent), it can be tough to choose between a camper van and a full-on RV or camping trailer. The camper van will be more maneuverable and manageable, and it’ll also be significantly cheaper. But space is constrained — which means, in particular, that the bathroom situation is bound to be…less than ideal.

German van builders Ahorn Camp resolved this conundrum with their new Renault Trafic-based Van Big City model for 2022, as spotted by New Atlas. As the name suggests, the Van Big City is a slightly bigger version of their Van City model, and it has just enough space to squeeze in a full wet bath at the rear of the vehicle. Sure, it’s cozy, but it also fits in a toilet, a sink and a shower (with the option to also shower outdoors if so inclined).

There is one drawback: the Van Big City uses a pop-top roof for extra height and an extra sleeping area, so the bathroom is only enclosed at the sides — which means sounds (and smells) are free to emanate throughout the cabin. Sure, the setup is better than a standalone shower head and cassette toilet, but using it will require some coordination — especially if you’re taking a family trip or have more than one couple sharing the van. .

In addition to the bathroom, the Van Big City fits in an L-shaped kitchen with a two-burner stove and a 41-liter fridge. The van sleeps up to four passengers in two double beds, one in the pop-top and one atop the dinette, which converts to a sleeping area.

Ahorn Camp has priced the Van Big City starting at just under $52,000 — relatively affordable by camper van standards. Alas, this van won’t be available in the United States.

The Ford Bronco Raptor Could Arrive Very Soon, Leak Says

The Ford Bronco is here and — after some hiccups — appears to be back in full production. In four and six-cylinder combustion spec, one could argue that it’s better than the Jeep Wrangler. Jeep has upped the ante since the Bronco’s reveal with the Wrangler 4xe hybrid and the Hemi V8-powered Wrangler 392. But Ford looks set to respond with a high-performance, desert-running Raptor version of the Bronco — first teased last fall.

An apparent leak on the Bronco6G forum may have told us a bit more about what to expect. The user found a Raptor trim in the Bronco order system, seemingly confirming that the Bronco Raptor is coming for the 2022 model year. 2022 versions of vehicles are already hitting dealers, suggesting a Bronco Raptor reveal coming very soon.

The leak shows two versions of the Bronco Raptor. One appears to be a stripped-down base trim with presumably just the mechanical upgrades. The other includes premium features like the luxury package, adaptive cruise control, voice-activated navigation, wireless charging, a heated steering wheel and an upgraded 10-speaker sound system. That would be in line with Ford’s current Bronco strategy, giving buyers the option to lux it up or build their own Bronco a la carte.

According to the leak, the Bronco Raptor — like the premium Wranglers — would be four-door only. The leak notes the Bronco Raptor getting the F-150 Raptor‘s Code Orange paint color option along with the new Eruption Green and Hot Pepper Red. The poster also spied a new Everglades trim for the Bronco — which explains this trademark application — but with no details beyond a Desert Sand paint option.

Unfortunately, the leak sheds no light on what engine the Bronco Raptor will have. Ford’s most rational options appear to be the 400 horsepower 3.0-liter V6 from the Explorer ST or the F-150 Raptor’s 450 hp 3.5-liter V6. There’s no mention of specific Bronco Raptor modifications. But a suspension lift, wider fenders and a heavier duty and higher travel suspension with FOX Racing shocks are good bets.

This Startup Just Blew Away Tesla’s Most Important Advantage

Tesla invented the premium EV segment. And they have been riding a key advantage that has kept them a step ahead, even as the likes of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche have come to compete: battery and powertrain technology. Build quality concerns aside, no manufacturer has been able to match or exceed Tesla on range and performance. That just changed dramatically.

Lucid Motors threw down the gauntlet to Tesla, promising their Air sedan would exceed the Model S on range with superior aerodynamics and a more efficiently packaged powertrain. The Air delivered. The EPA has officially rated Air Dream R AWD with 19-inch wheels for 520 miles, representing a massive step forward for EV technology. The Air Dream P performance version that bumps the power output to 1,111 horsepower earned a 471-mile rating.

The Lucid Air bests the Tesla Model S Long Range by 115 miles. For perspective, it was considered a massive deal when the Model S broke the 400-mile barrier in 2020. Tesla had planned its own tri-motor Model S Plaid Plus with its new 4680 battery cells that it said would bring 520 miles of range. However, Tesla canceled the Plaid Plus shortly before production started, with Elon Musk claiming there was no need for it as the Model S Plaid was “just so good.”

We expect Tesla will revisit the Plaid Plus Model S or something similar to battle the Lucid Air in the future. However, that would mean adding that to a Tesla to-do list that includes the Semitruck, the Cybertruck, the Roadster — which buyers put $50,000 deposits on and may be powered by rockets— and Level 5 autonomous driving tech intended to turn Tesla vehicles into a massive robotaxi fleet. Purportedly there’s a robot coming as well.

Chevy’s Next Silverado HD Could Pack Record-Breaking Power

Earlier this month, Chevy unveiled the Silverado refresh coming for 2022 — revealing a new Raptor-fighting off-roader, the Silverado ZR2, and interior and exterior styling upgrades for all the Silverado 1500s. With the regular trucks having just been updated, a refresh for the Silverado HD (and GMC Sierra HD) trucks should follow for the 2023 model year. And it may come with eye-popping — and record-breaking — power upgrades.

TFLTruck, citing an anonymous GM insider, reports that the refresh will include an update to GM’s 6.6-liter turbodiesel Duramax V8. Per the source, the update will push the engine’s outputs to 505 horsepower and 1,085 lb-ft of torque. That’s an additional 60 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque over the previous generation.

Both numbers would put the Silverado and Sierra HD at the top of the segment. Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel has 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft torque. Ram’s 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six diesel checks in with 420 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque.

What do those numbers mean in real life? The current Silverado 3500 HD is rated to tow 36,000 pounds. This power boost would likely push it past the Ram 3500, which has the current best-in-class tow rating of 37,100, and the Ford F-450, with a max rating of 37,000 lbs.

We suspect that most Silverado HD owners won’t get close to testing that max towing capacity. It’s not often you’re going to have to tow something like an aircraft carrier’s anchor, which still would leave you with plenty of spare capacity. But the Big Three truck battle is fierce, and being able to say you do something “best-in-class” pays dividends.

Triumph Just Made the Speed Triple Even Sportier

Well hello, good looking. British bike manufacturer Triumph — who you may know as builders of the stunning Steve McQueen edition Scrambler 1200, among many other bikes — has just revealed their new Speed Triple 1200 RR motorcycle for 2022, which the’re calling “a modern take on the café racer and the ultimate sport bike for the road.” It’s based on the Speed Triple 1200 RS with the same lightweight chassis and 1160cc engine that puts out 178 horsepower and 92 lb-ft of torque — but it receives even more sporty enhancements for a more track-oriented feel.

The biggest visual distinction for the RR is the addition of a small fairing compared to the naked RS, which provides some wind protection without going full-on sportbike. Triumph also altered the riding position for a more “engaged and committed” ride. They relocated the handlebars five inches lower and two inches forward and moved the footpads up and back. The bike will come in a pair of two-tone paint jobs:Red Hopper with Storm Grey or Crystal White with Storm Grey.

Triumph gave the Speed Triple 1200 RR Ohlins’s Smart EC 2.0 electronically adjustable front and rear suspension — their most advanced system. The new bike keeps the same wheels from the RS, but adds high-performance Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP V3 tires. Buyers wanting even more performance can tack on track-only Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC 2V3 tires.

The 2022 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR will start at $20,950, a $2,450 premium over the Speed Triple 1200 RS. That will include a two-year unlimited mileage warranty. According to Motorcycle.com, the new bike should arrive at new dealers by January 2022.

Lexus Could Be About to Deliver a Major Upgrade to the Other Land Cruiser

For many years, Toyota sold the Land Cruiser in the United States — at least, until 2021, when Toyota axed the venerable, slow-selling model from our lineup. The Lexus LX — a rebodied version of the Land Crusher — seems all but sure to still be sold in America going forward, luckily. But the best-selling Land Cruiser variant in the U.S. isn’t the LX; it’s the Lexus GX, which is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. It’s smaller, substantially cheaper — and typically outsells the aforementioned Land Cruisers four times over in America.

Still, the second-generation GX has grown dated; it entered production in 2009. And trademark filings for “GX550” uncovered in America by CarBuzz and in Costa Rica by Motor Trend suggest the current GX 460 could be set for a major upgrade.

Lexus model nomenclature has changed: the GX 460 stems from an earlier era where the three-digit number neatly tracked engine displacement. The GX 460 uses a 4.6-liter V8 engine. Lexus now uses the three-digit number to reflect relative output; 550 is higher than 450, which is higher than 350. So, the GX550 should be more powerful than the 301-hp GX 460, which has about as much grunt as a four-cylinder Ford Bronco.

We would bet that the GX550 will be a new third-generation model, not a revised version of the existing SUV. Rumors point to the new Land Cruiser Prado arriving sometime within the next two years, and Toyota has a new TNGA-F body-on-frame truck platform that will underpin the new Tundra pickup. It would be weird if Lexus were not giving the strong-selling GX a complete overhaul for a new era.

The question is which engine GX550 will refer to. We suspect Lexus would launch with a gas engine, perhaps the 400-plus horsepower twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that’s going in the new Land Cruiser. That said Toyota has said all models will have a hybrid option by 2025, including the GX. (Toyota’s YouTube channel also recently dropped a still-mysterious explainer for diesel engines, leaving us wondering if an oil-burner is in the cards.)

Remember, Toyota told off-road enthusiasts to hang tight when it announced it was eliminating the Land Cruiser for 2022. Lexus has a new three-row crossover coming to carry the water for families. One could see the new GX leaning even harder into off-roading capability — and becoming the smaller, cheaper Land Cruiser option many in America has long wanted.

This Stunning Vintage Toyota Land Cruiser Is Cooler Than Ice

If I had to pick just one Toyota Land Cruiser to own, it would be the FJ60. It’s one of the most influential SUVs ever made. It looks great, being nowhere near as bloated as its successors. The FJ60, I’d argue is the perfect combination of family practicality and off-road capability. And it may be the finest example of Toyota’s commitment to quality, durability and reliability. How many years and miles will an FJ60 last? We’re still trying to find out nearly 40 years later.

Corsetti Cruisers

Corsetti Cruisers

So I’m extra-excited to hear that California-based Land Cruiser restorers Corsetti Cruisers has announced they will be doing a new series of Land Cruiser builds. They will be complete 2,200-hour frame-off restorations that keep the look and vibe of the original, but dramatically enhance it to be far more livable by 2021 standards. And their first rebuilt 1984 FJ60 looks exquisite.

Corsetti Cruisers swaps out the classic Land Cruiser engine for GM’s LS3 6.2-liter V8 crate engine, mated to a four-speed automatic. That setup puts out 495 horsepower, more than triple the 135 hp of the stock engine. The build keeps the stock Toyota three-speed transfer case. Other modifications from Corsetti Cruisers include an Old Man Emu suspension, 33-inch BF Goodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires, and rear disc brakes with a HydroBoost system.

According to Corsetti Cruisers, their FJ60 build can earn 22 to 24 mpg on the highway. The original FJ60, by contrast, was rated for 12 mpg highway under EPA testing — when new.

land cruiser interior

Corsetti Cruisers

The Corsetti Cruisers series build also brings the interior to modern comfort levels with custom leather on the seats and door panels, a 10-inch Pioneer infotainment screen, a reverse camera and a modern sound system. This Land Cruiser had rear jump seats added behind the second row.

Corsetti Cruisers says the cost of a series build is $135,000. That’s substantially more than you would typically pay for an FJ60 on Bring a Trailer. But those likely have not had a complete frame-off restoration. And it’s not that much more than you would pay for a new Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes-Benz GLS.

The 2022 Subaru WRX Has Arrived, and Yes, It Still Has a Manual Transmission

In case you’d forgotten about it amongst all the other chaos and news of recent years, the WRX is Subaru’s rally-inspired sports sedan. It’s a car we thirsted over in high school, and one of the influential cars that made us love cars. It’s also very long in the teeth.

Well, until now — as Subaru has just unveiled the all-new 2022 WRX. It isn’t a dramatic departure visually (though the sight of a WRX that isn’t festooned with aftermarket mods and JDM stickers can be jarring.) But unlike many combustion performance cars biding their time until being phased out, the WRX is legitimately all-new.

Here’s what you need to know about the 2022 Subaru WRX.

The 2022 Subaru WRX has a new engine and platform

Unlike the new BRZ, the WRX will join cars like the Outback and Forester on the Subaru Global Platform. The new platform is much stiffer and offers a lower center of gravity, leading to improved handling, ride quality and crash protection.

Subaru also replaced the previous base engine with a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer engine putting out 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The larger displacement from the previous 2.0-liter should provide a broader torque curve.

All WRX models will feature Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system.

The 2022 Subaru WRX offers a manual transmission

As expected, Subaru has kept the six-speed manual for the WRX. The conundrum for keeping the manual was that it isn’t compatible with Subaru’s Eyesight safety technology available on the new global platform. Subaru resolved that by…not offering Eyesight on manual versions.

The other option is what Subaru is calling the “Subaru Performance Transmission,” which is basically an improved and sport-tuned version of Subaru’s CVT — not an enthusiast favorite. (Subaru swears it’s good, though.) That transmission offers an eight-speed faux manual mode with paddle shifters, however.

The 2022 WRX has a new top-of-the-line GT trim

Subaru wants to make WRX enthusiasts think twice about getting the CVT. One sweetener is a new high-performance GT trim. It offers electronically controlled dampers and a drive mode selector, which can customize the driving profile up to 430 different ways. The GT trim also offers Recaro seats and special 18-inch wheels with summer performance tires.

The catch? The GT model will only be offered with the CVT.

The 2022 Subaru WRX arrives early next year

Subaru says the new WRX will arrive at dealers in early 2022 as a 2022 model year vehicle. There’s no word yet on pricing.

The WRX STI is coming, too.

Expect Subaru to reveal a racier STI version of the new WRX sometime soon. Rumors suggest the new STI model could be manual-only and pack up to 400 hp. However, note that rumors shot about 30 hp too high with the base model, so don’t be surprised if the 2023 WRX STI makes closer to 370 ponies.

Genesis Just Teased Us With an Onslaught of New Cars

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury arm, produces some of our favorite new cars, including excellent efforts like the new G80 sedan and the all-new GV80 SUV. The vehicles look great, they’re luxurious, they drive smoothly and — like almost all Hyundai Group offerings of late — they offer compelling value propositions compared to competitors. The only quibble is that the cars aren’t particularly fuel-efficient.

Genesis plans to address that issue in a big way. The brand just unveiled a new product strategy for the next decade with an onslaught of new vehicles — that will see the brand go fully electric by 2030.

The transition will happen in stages. From 2025 onward, all new Genesis cars will be purely electric. The brand will employ what it’s calling a dual-electric strategy, investing in both battery technology and higher output hydrogen fuel cell powertrains. By 2030, Genesis will only be selling EVs, with a lineup of eight new vehicles. The brand hopes for vehicle production to be completely carbon neutral by 2035.

Genesis’s shift toward EVs is already underway. The brand’s first electric car, the Electrified G80 sedan, is due to arrive very soon. Genesis has also unveiled the GV60, a slightly-0dd looking SUV that will be the brand’s first vehicle built on Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform that underpins the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6.

Going fully electric will be a bold transition. But Genesis announcing it will do so is not too surprising. Luxury brands like Volvo, Cadillac and Jaguar have been the first to commit to going all-electric. They sell a relatively small number of vehicles to buyers already willing to pay a premium. It won’t require huge technological advancements. Hyundai and Kia going 100 percent electric by bringing EVs to the global masses will be a far greater challenge.

Subaru launched its new rugged Wilderness sub-brand with the off-road-oriented Outback Wilderness — but that first example certainly isn’t the last of these new models. The Forester Wilderness is a similar idea to the Outback Wilderness. The biggest change is more ground clearance: the Forester Wilderness gets a bump from the Subaru-standard 8.7 inches to 9.2 inches, and rides on Yokohoma Geolandar all-terrain tires. It has longer coil springs and shock absorbers and special tuning to account for the changes. Visual changes include a new front fascia, enhanced wheel arch cladding, a front skid plate and hexagonal floodlights.

Compared to the Outback Wilderness, the Forester Wilderness has about a third of an inch less ground clearance; perhaps more importantly, it also does not have an uprated 260 hp turbocharged engine. The Forester only uses the base 2.5-liter flat-four that is in the Outback (and all other Foresters), putting out 182 hp. Only having the base engine gives the Forester a much lower tow rating — up to 1,500 lbs — than the Outback, which can tow up to 3,500 lbs.

Subaru made a cool change to all Foresters, including the Wilderness version, by upgrading to a stronger ladder-type roof rack. The new rack can hold up to 220 pounds (+46 lbs from the 2021 model) and up to 800 pounds (+100 lbs from 2021) when the Forester is parked. That provides Forester buyers with more leeway to use a larger rooftop tent.

Starting MSRP for the Forester Wilderness will be $32,280, a little over $4,000 cheaper than the Outback Wilderness. In Forester terms, it’s slightly more expensive than the Limited trim but less than the top-level Touring trim. The Forester Wilderness offers one option package that provides navigation, a premium Harmon Kardon sound system and a power rear liftgate for $1,850.

Is Ford Benchmarking the Toyota 4Runner for a New Bronco?

Car companies benchmark their opposition vehicles while testing; Ford, for example, clearly did so with the Jeep Wrangler when designing the new Bronco. But the Wrangler is not the Bronco’s only rival; many buyers will be cross-shopping it with the more dated (but still awesome) Toyota 4Runner.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Interestingly, Ford has just been spotted testing a top-of-the-line 4Runner TRD Pro. Ford Authority has spy photos of that SUV driving near Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn. It has the yellow sticker Ford affixes to test vehicles, and it has a Michigan manufacturer plate — Toyotas typically have a Texas one. The 4Runner encountered some dirt at some stage, and it’s missing part of its bumper.

It’s hard to read any specific Bronco-related purpose into Ford benchmarking a 4Runner TRD Pro. We can presume it isn’t powertrain-related, unless Ford has top-secret plans to half the number of gears in its automatic transmission or shift to a 4.0-liter V6 that delivers less torque than the brand’s 2.3-liter turbo four. The Bronco exceeds the 4Runner on most off-road specifications.

No future Bronco projects that are probable but as yet unconfirmed — like an upcoming hybrid model or a high-performance Bronco Raptor — seem immediately 4Runner-related. About the only clear advantage the 4Runner has on paper over the Bronco — besides current availability — is towing capacity. The 4Runner can tow up to 5,000 lbs compared to the Bronco’s 3,500 lb rating.

It’s possible Ford could be benchmarking the 4Runner for a non-Bronco vehicle. Though some form of Edge Timberline, with that model expected to be canceled, feels far-fetched. We may just be looking at a simple case of due diligence. A Bronco, nearly 10 years newer, should be able to do almost everything better than a Toyota 4Runner. And it would make sense for Ford to have the best 4Runner on hand to confirm that.

GMC Just Dropped This Badass New Overlanding Truck Concept

GMC just unveiled its Canyon AT4 OVERLANDX concept truck — one word, all caps — at Overland Expo Mountain West. The build “showcases the brand’s off-road performance vision.” Essentially, it’s a seriously cool statement that you don’t necessarily need a Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator, Chevy Colorado ZR2 or Ford Ranger to build a badass midsize overlanding vehicle.

The base truck is the Canyon AT4, GMC’s premium off-roading counterpart to the Denali sub-brand that has spread across the lineup on vehicles like the Sierra 1500 pickup and Yukon SUV. The OVERLANDX basically takes that trim to the next level.

GMC added a wider, factory lifted off-road chassis with an enhanced underbody. The truck rides on 33-inch BF Goodrich KM3 mud terrain tires — the factory Canyon AT4 has 31-inch treads — with a swivel mount, so you don’t need to store the larger spare in the bed. The OVERLANDX also receives front and rear locking differentials and Multimatic DSSV dampers.

GMC says the changes give the AT4 OVERLANDX concept a 27.7-degree approach angle, an impressive ten inches of ground clearance (more than the Tacoma TRD Pro) and 32.1 inches of water fording capability with a custom snorkel (more than the Jeep Gladiator).

Other overlanding modifications include a heavy-duty front bumper with a winch, guy lines to protect the windshield, a rooftop tent, a 270-degree awning, a cooler, a kitchenette, a truck bed storage system with drawers, a solar panel and jerry cans for fuel and water. The OVERLANDX also features a unique grille and headlamp design and a characteristically premium GMC leather-wrapped interior.

The AT4 OVERLANDX is a concept, so don’t expect GM to put it into full production anytime soon. But every concept vehicle is a manufacturer throwing out ideas to see what resonates. So we could certainly see the Canyon AT4 get some awesome enhancements and accessories — along the lines of the Off-Road Performance Edition — moving forward.

The Complete Guide to Pop-Up Trailer Campers

It may be hard to believe right now, but fall is just around the corner — which means, with the scorching ambient temperatures and the soupy humidity of summer begin to subside, we’re about to be in the ideal temperatures for camping season.

While there are a variety of ways to accommodate sleeping arrangements once the fire burns out, the smores supply wanes, and the time to turn in for the night approaches — rooftop tents, regular tents, camping trailers, camper vans, et cetera — in this case, we’re talking about pop-up tent trailer campers.

Which, of course, may beg the question:

What Exactly Is a Pop-Up Tent Trailer?

When it comes to camping, you can always go the bougie glamping route with a decked-out motorhome, a camper bus, or even a fancy-schmancy Airstream; yet these are big, cumbersome and pricey compared with the freedom and flexibility of other forms of camping. On the opposite side of the spectrum, one can go back to basics with a simple tent. Even with padding, though, trying to sleep on rough terrain however can be a major turnoff for many. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternative happy mediums in between — one of which is the pop-up tent trailer camper.

Think of it as a basic camping tent—or even, in some cases, a mobile compartmentalized gazebo—mounted permanently atop a small trailer chassis and equipped with onboard amenities. More than that, though, it’s all efficiently bundled together with sleeping arrangements that your back might appreciate — in a package almost any car can tow.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a Trailer Tent

Pop-up trailer tents often come equipped with items similar those of a much larger camper, but in pint-sized portions. For example, depending on the model, you might find a small cooking station, hardtop and dinette seating surfaces, extra storage spaces, a kitchenette sink, even air conditioning. The standard features list tends to include integrated electronics and plumbing, flexible connectivity options for water, propane, and power hook-ups, and more.

But at the same time, trailer tents are not as cumbersome or expensive as full-sized trailers, which need heavy-duty pickups or beefy SUVs and lots of space to haul. Most pop-up tent trailers weigh less than 3,000 pounds meaning they can be hitched up to most mid-to-full-size vehicles, like your average crossover SUV. Additionally, many pop-up trailer tents collapse into it their chassis for mobility purposes; yet when set up at one’s favorite camping site, they’re screened off to keep nature out.

There are a few disadvantages, though — particularly if you’re a stickler for square footage, or if you have large groups of people with you, as tent trailers are meant to be a compact and efficient way to camp. And you do need a vehicle with some sort of tow hitch to be able to drive off with one. Those without a factory hitch would have to consider aftermarket options.

And then there’s cost. While they are significantly cheaper than a larger camper or “destination” trailer, they still can cost a pretty penny—at least, when compared to your average tent that costs a few hundred bucks. Most brand-new pop-up campers range from as little as $7,000 to over $20,000 for the larger, more lavishly equipped models.

The Best Trailer Tents

Like the trailer and motorhome market, there is a plethora of household names in the pop-up trailer tent market —as well as a few startups growing in popularity.

Roofnest’s New Falcon Pro Is the Pinnacle of Rooftop Tents

We here at Gear Patrol are big fans of rooftop tents. After all, car camping is one of the easiest ways to get out and explore this beautiful world of ours; adding a secure, mattress-equipped sleeping space that’s high away from the cold ground and the hungry bears just makes it even better.

And when it comes to rooftop tents, few do it better than the folks over at Colorado-based Roofnest. Their lightweight car toppers are tough as hell, packed with features — and, of course, not bad to look at. Still, even by the company’s standards, the new Roofnest Pro stands out from the crowd.

One glance at the deployed tent makes it clear what the biggest change is. Compared with the regular Falcon, there’s significantly more interior space thanks to what the brand is calling its “U-bar” system, which pushes the aft part of the tent out further. This enables not just a roomier interior, but also means the side windows are twice as big as those on the Falcon; plus, it even now packs a skylight.

The innovations aren’t just obvious from this view, though. The new sculpted aluminum shell is more aerodynamic than the flat shape of the stowed Falcon, but also provides room inside to leave bedding in the tent even when it’s closed. The accessory channels on the side can support a rooftop load of up to 150 pounds when closed (and 75 pounds when open), so you can still carry mountain bikes or other gear atop your tent. And inside, there’s two USB-powered LED light strips and a bevy of gear pockets, including a clear one you can slide your iPad into for movie watching.

At just 165 pounds, the Roofnest Pro is light enough to take on two people and still be well within the static load capacity of, say, a Subaru Outback Wilderness, let alone a more traditional SUV. If you order now, Roofnest will ship your Falcon Pro out in late October, so you’ll have a little bit of anticipation — but on the flipside, you’ll also save $200 off the full retail price of $4,195.

A Legendary Sports Car Is Coming Back, But It May Be in a Different Form

The original Acura NSX is one of the most iconic cars of all time. It had the optimal driver’s rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout with a naturally aspirated V6 and a manual transmission. F1 legend Ayrton Senna helped out with the chassis tuning. The current second-generation NSX has not been as big of a hit.

Reviews for the new NSX have been great. But with an intricate hybrid system and a steep price tag, it has not resonated the same way with buyers. Almost literally no one has bought an NSX, which is why it’s due to depart the Acura lineup for a more affordable replacement after the last hurrah in 2022 with the Type S. But according to The Drive, the NSX’s poor sales won’t put Acura off from trying again with the NSX. A new NSX is coming, and it may be even more futuristic.

Acura Vice President and Brand Officer Jon Ikeda confirmed that there would be another NSX. He told The Drive, “If you notice, we make an NSX when there’s something we want to say. The first-gen was gas. Second-gen was a hybrid. There’s gonna be another one.” When asked if that new car would be electric, Ikeda reportedly smiled and declined to comment.

If we presume we’re getting a new NSX and it likely will be all-electric, it may take a long time. Honda appears to be far away from cranking out high-end electric cars. The brand has produced one of the most distinctive electric cars, the Honda e. But in the American market, Honda has mostly been pushing hybrids with vehicles like the CR-V and the Accord.

The first Honda and Acura EVs destined for America will be GM-built SUVs and won’t arrive until 2024. Honda’s dedicated EV platform may not arrive until after that. And Honda notably left an 11-year gap between the last two NSX generations. So “there’s gonna be another one” may not necessarily mean a new NSX is in the immediate Honda/Acura product planning for 2023.
