Small Air Purifiers Aren’t Supposed to Be This Powerful

Need to freshen up the air in your house, but don’t want a giant air purifier that becomes the centerpiece of whatever room it’s in? Well, it’s your lucky day. The Airmega 250, launching Tuesday, combines the best of Coway’s previous models to make what looks like their best yet.

A lot of the tech specs of the Airmega 250 are impressive, but it’s the size-to-power ratio that stands out. It covers 930 square feet of room, while remaining compact (18.5 by 19.7 by 8.3 inches). It packs clean air delivery ratings of 230 for pollen, 249 for smoke and 261 for dust, all of which are way above average for a device of this size.

The new Coway merges the looks of the Airmega 150 ($149), our pick for the best-looking air purifier; the power of the Airmega AP-1512HHS ($199), our pick for the best overall air purifier; and comes a little shy of the room coverage of the Airmega 400 ($447), our pick for the best large-room air purifier, all for $399.

The air purifier uses three-stage filtration — a washable pre-filter, a Green True HEPA filter and activated carbon filter — which the brand claims can remove 99.999 percent of particles as small as 0.01 micrometers, which is smaller than most viruses and bacteria. Just so you know your air purifier is doing its job, the device has a LED air quality monitor on top of the device to let you know when your air quality is good (blue), moderate (green), unhealthy (yellow) or very unhealthy (red). Keep the Airmega 250 in auto mode to ensure you’re always hovering around “good” or “moderate” air quality without having to manage power settings.

air purifier
With its realtime air quality monitor, you can make sure your air is always clean.

Coway

The Airmega 250 adapts to its surroundings so you can set it and forget it. In sleep mode, the air purifier will use its built-in light and pollution sensors to detect when it’s been in a dark room and the air’s been clean for three minutes before it kicks down the fan to its lowest speed. In eco mode, the air purifier will turn off its fan after the air has been purifier for 10 minutes — once pollution is detected, it’ll kick right back in.

The Airmega 250 is available now on Coway’s website for $399. There are also plans to release a Wi-Fi-compatible model, the Airmega 250s, set for release later this year.

Floyd Just Launched a Secondhand Furniture Market for Earth Day

Every year, about 9.7 million tons of furniture ends up in landfills in the United States. (That’s the equivalent of 93 nuclear aircraft carriers being tossed aside.) Detroit-based Floyd company has set out to counteract how much furniture ends up getting trashed by making pieces that, ostensibly, should last forever. And because of their puzzle-like construction, if a piece of furniture were to break or get damaged, one can easily swap out the piece rather than scrapping the whole thing.

Now, on Earth Day, Floyd is furthering its commitment to keeping furniture out of the trash by launching a secondhand market for its sofas, shelves, beds and more.

Through its Full Cycle program, Floyd will be offering discounts up to 50 percent on used products that the brand has refurbished to be as close to new as possible. That means a small ding, scratch or scuff could yield you huge savings on made-in-USA furniture.

To launch its Full Cycle program, Floyd worked with Floor Found, which collects, inspects and resells furniture from brands like Inside Weather, Feather and Sabai.

Floyd has been working on this circular market idea for over a year. Now, after reworking its returns system, the brand will over at-home pickup for returns, which will end up in warehouses across the US to be set up for resale. Each piece of used furniture on Floor Found includes the name of the inspector, as well as a rating of its condition and pictures of the actual furniture you’ll be buying.

Head over to the Floyd’s website to learn more about its Full Cycle program, and shop the secondhand market at Floor Found.

Treat Every Day Like Earth Day and Shop From This Sustainable Home Goods Website

For Goldune, a new online store for environmentally friendly home goods, sustainability is a spectrum. “Sustainable” is a buzzword these days, most often used as a way to sell more stuff. Goldune makes specific an otherwise vague and misleading term by breaking it down into a few components: whether it’s biodegradable or compostable to whether it was made with clean energy or with zero waste. And to help you navigate the often confusing nature of sustainability, everything at Goldune comes with a literal rating on a sustainability spectrum ranging from “Super Sustainable” to “Getting Better.”

Azora Zoe Paknad founded Goldune in 2020 to curate all of her favorite sustainable products — from home decor and food to snacks and personal grooming — in one place. The site’s name is a transliteration of the world “گلدان,” which means “flower vessel” in Farsi, Paknad’s first language. “If I wanted to get really deep about it, I’d say we’re a vessel for nature, ” she says. “But to tell you the truth, I just liked the sound, spelling and compound wordiness of the English transliteration.”

goldune pantry items
Everything Goldune stocks, including its snacks and pantry items, falls somewhere on its sustainability spectrum, which ranges from “Super Sustainable” to “Getting Better.”

Goldune

While sustainability seems to be everywhere nowadays, it’s only really entered the national conversation within the last couple years. (You’ll remember the plastic straw bans everyone seemed to hop on.) A website like Goldune may seem long overdue, but it’s actually just now ushering in a new type of sustainable shopping. “We’re part of a new wave of retailers iterating on existing concepts (like selling home and lifestyle goods, or selling sustainable goods, or in our case, combining the two into something new) and if we’d started sooner there’d have been nothing to iterate on,” Paknad says.

Goldune isn’t here to shame everyone into turning into a composting, shoe-less hippie, and is avoiding what Paknad calls “fear based marketing, all-or-nothing energy [and] the shame and judgment that a lot of zero waste or sustainable retailers do.” The approachable nature of Goldune is seen in the friendly design and the items themself, which skew towards design-conscious millennials, who don’t want sustainability to outweigh looks.

Even behind the curtain, Goldune is building an inclusive community that goes against what Paknad calls “mainstream sustainable shopping” that “largely appeals to wealthy white folks.” The store makes a conscience effort to stock products and brands from women and the BIPOC community. As of the first financial quarter in 2021, 72 percent of the brands Goldune stocks are led by women, and 39 percent of the brands are BIPOC founded.

Goldune is, first and foremost, a store. But it’s also a resource for how to be more eco-conscious by providing knowledge through its blog and social media channels. Most recently, the store gave away sustainable book club reads so people could be informed about climate change. People are going to shop anyway, and Goldune offers a way for people shop better, both for themselves and for the world at large.

“Yes, the planet would be best served by the end of consumption altogether— but I don’t see that happening tomorrow,” Paknad says. “Until we figure out how that works and what that looks like, I wanted to build the next best way to buy things for Earth and the people on it.”

How to Clean Your Gnarly Weed Vape the Right Way

Welcome to Product Support, a series devoted to helping you get the most out of your stuff.

No matter how much you spent on a weed vaporizers, proper maintenance and cleaning is vital to make sure you’re getting full-flavored, full-powered hits every time. Plus, cleaning your device makes it last longer, and you won’t have to replace parts, or the vape itself, as often.

Luckily getting your vape clean isn’t very hard — as long as you know what you’re doing. Keeping that thing free of grime will have you set for the foreseeable future. Here’s how to clean your dirty ass weed vape.

Step 1: Completely disassemble your vape

Every vape is built a little different, so consult with your vape’s manual to make sure you’re taking everything apart without destroying the thing. It’s a tedious step, but you can’t just try to clean the visible pieces of your vape, otherwise you’ll miss all the built-up and hidden nastiness.

Step 2: Get to cleaning!

Again, you’ll have to consult your manual for this, but it’s vital to avoid damaging any of your vape’s parts. Get rid of any visible debris whether it’s used-up bud or excess oil. Most of your vape’s small parts will be OK to soak in water, water with a few drops of dish soap or diluted rubbing alcohol (Read. Your. Manual), and use a cotton swab to loosen, scrub and wipe away visible gunk. It’s common to use a water and lemon juice solution as needed, too, if plain old water isn’t doing the trick of you don’t have rubbing alcohol on hand. Some vapes will come with a small brush (the ones used to clean hair clippers) which can be extremely useful when cleaning dry herb vapes.

Step 3: Rinse everything

Have you ever vaporized rubbing alcohol and pulled it into your lungs? Me neither, and it’s probably best to leave that stone unturned. Once you’ve cleared the tank, heating chamber, mouth piece, heating element or whatever other parts your particular vape is made with, give it a wash. If you’ve used any cleaning solutions beyond water at all, this is a necessary step.

Step 4: Dry everything

Dry everything with a paper towel so no metal parts get rusty. Before you put your vape together, you’ll need to make sure everything is fully dry lest you run the risk of ruining your device. Water sitting around inside a freshly cleaned vape is a quick way to ensure you’ll be taking it apart again very soon.

Step 5: Take a hit

Once everything is clean, and your vape is whole again — power up, and enjoy clean hits.

The 10 Best Weed Vapes for a Better High

With the number of states legalizing cannabis increasing — and the number of medical marijuana patients going up — it’s never been easier to access the healing properties of cannabis. However, ripping a bong or hitting from a pipe can draw unsavory reactions, whether from pesky landlords who would catch a whiff from an open window or roommates who can’t take the lingering smell (no matter how much air freshener you use). Vaporizers offer a level of discreteness. Even better, vaporizing weed can get you higher while using less product. We tested an assortment of vaporizers — some are compatible with flower, some are compatible with concentrates, some are compatible with both — to identify the ones that are worth your green and the ones that will wreck your green. These 10 cannabis vaporizers represent the former.

The Best Weed Vapes

    Weed Vapes 101

Is vaporizing weed healthier than smoking it?

Probably. According to Mitch Earleywine, professor of psychology at the University at Albany, SUNY, and author of Understanding Marijuana, data from his lab shows that switching to vaporizing decreases respiratory irritation and increases lung volume in heavy users. And, compared to using oil vape pens that work with a 510 thread battery and a cartridge, there are proven health benefits to ingesting cannabis via herbal and concentrate vaporizers. However, Earleywine says to keep the temperature low to prevent lung irritation.“Those who are careful not to overheat the plant are bound to see respiratory irritation improve in as little as a month,” he says. “Those who crank up the temp likely do not benefit.”

    Is vaping safe?

Besides purchasing from reputable brands, Earleywine says to “start low and go slow” to prevent getting so high that you start thinking too much about climate change.

“Users suggest that they are accustomed to smoking and knowing the magnitude of the effects fairly quickly, often within a minute,” he says. “In contrast, they describe vaporized cannabis as ‘a creeper,’ in the sense that the subjective effects get larger over the first 15 minutes or so. Many claim their first use of the vaporizer led them to ‘over-medicate,’ so to speak.”

There are also significant ethical considerations to ingesting cannabis. BIPOC are still disproportionately affected by petty drug crimes while states legalize marijuana. Work toward restorative justice by making regular donations to mutual aid groups that help incarcerated people, or organizations like the Last Prisoner Project, which works to permanently reverse the injustice toward those who have suffered criminal convictions due to the War on Drugs. Additionally, you should support companies that donate to or have cannabis criminal justice reform initiatives in place.

    How does vaporizing weed work?

Unlike bongs, pipes and joints, which use a direct flame as the means of releasing the cannabinoids in marijuana, convection and conduction vaporizers use heat. Conduction vaporizers use direct heat contact to release the cannabinoids in marijuna. However, the direct heat means that there’s a possibility you could burn your weed. These devices tend to be cheaper, portable, heat up faster and tend to be easier to use. Convection vaporizers, on the other hand, use the transfer of heat — think of it like cooking something in the oven — to heat up the cannabis. Instead of directly heating the weed, heating elements in convection vaporizers heat the air, which is forced around and through the herb. Convection vaporizers tend to be more expensive and less portable than their conduction counterparts, but provide better vapor quality and flavor along with even heating. Products that are advertised as using “hybrid” heating use both convection and conduction.

Best Overall Weed Vape: Pax 3

    Courtesy

    Pax 3

    Pax pax.com

    $250.00

The Pax 3 can do it all. Its single-button design makes it easy to use for beginners, and the custom-temperature capabilities with the Android app (sorry, iPhone stans) allow for weed heads to heat a strain to an exact temperature to target certain terpenes. I would recommend getting the complete kit, which includes the concentrate chamber ($50 on its own) and other useful goodies — I like using the half-pack lid when I don’t want to consume an entire full bowl. Although I don’t love that the concentrate attachment juts out from the bottom of the device, the dabs hit better than other vaporizers with concentrate capabilities that I tested. You essentially get two devices in one with the complete kit. And, its 10-year warranty — one of the best in the market — gives you peace of mind.

Best Splurge Weed Vape: Storz & Bickel Mighty

    Courtesy

    Mighty Vaporizer

    Storz & Bickel storz-bickel.com

    $349.00

You want the Storz & Bickel experience in the palm of your hand? Look no further than the Mighty. The battery-powered Mighty uses a combination of full hot air convection heating and additional conduction, which ensures an efficient vaporization from the first draw. Like the Volcano Hybrid, it has an LED screen for precise temperature control. It has 500 reviews and is rated at five stars for a very good reason.

Best Budget Weed Vape: GPen Dash

    Courtesy

    Dash Vaporizer

    GPen gpen.com

    $55.96

You’re guaranteed to be satisfied if you purchase any GPen vaporizer for your flower. However, the GPen Dash — Grenco Science’s newest addition to its portfolio of dry herb vaporizers — is an excellent option for beginners purchasing their first vape, or for those looking for something simple and discreet that gets the job done. The controls are easy (press the main button five times to turn on and off, and press it three times to change between three heat options) and the buzzy haptics, combined with the aluminum alloy body, give it a nice feel in the palm of your hand.

Best-Looking Weed Vape: Magic Flight Launch Box

    Courtesy

    Launch Box

    Magic Flight magic-flight.com

    $140.00

The Launch Box, much like vinyl records and cassettes, gives a slow, analog feel in a world filled with fancy digital tech. And, much like its name suggests, it will send you to the moon. There’s so much more to love about it than that, however. It’s made by local artisans in San Diego, California, and is sourced from natural and renewable materials. The quote on the back of the Launch Box, along with the company mission, is absolutely inspiring — the former almost made me cry upon opening the box. It’s a conversation piece, it provides a completely different experience compared to other vaporizers on the market and it can get you high. What more could you want from an object in your home?

Easiest-to-Use Weed Vape: Arizer Solo II

    Courtesy

    Solo II

    Arizer arizer.com

    $269.99

“Vapor the way you like it without the need for apps or gimmicks,” reads the product listing for the Solo II. Using the Solo II mirrors that phrase: the Solo II is tanky, frill-less and delivers clean, smooth vapor thanks to its hybrid heating system. I personally wouldn’t use the Solo II outside of my house because of the glass tube, but it can be done. Make sure to use the included stainless steel filter screens, or you will accidentally breath in a small fleck of cannabis, just like I did.

Best Tabletop Weed Vape: Storz & Bickel Volcano Hybrid

    Courtesy

    Volcano Hybrid Vaporizer

    Storz & Bickel storz-bickel.com

    $559.20

“Building something for the flashy look doesn’t give you the best experience,” says Andy Lytwynec, vice president of global company vape business at Canopy Growth, which owns Storz & Bickel. That’s absolutely true with the Volcano Hybrid: Although the Volcano resembles a Subaru Outback, it’s considered the Rolls Royce of cannabis ingestion. While testing the Volcano Hybrid, I only wrote “I am so upsettingly stoned” in my notes. The Hybrid differs from the Volcano Classic with the inclusion of a digital display with custom temperature settings, the addition of a hookah-like tube for more casual consumption when you don’t want to use one of the famous bags and app capabilities for Android users. Having a Volcano is a stoner flex, and there’s a reason why.

Best Portable Weed Vape: GPen Roam

    Courtesy

    Roam Vaporizer

    GPen gpen.com

    $199.66

The Roam is perfect for dabbing on the go, or if you’re just very clumsy and don’t want to break a concentrate vaporizer that’s primarily made of glass. It’s compact, spill-proof, heats up fast, has a great LED screen and comes with a sturdy travel case. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to use. This was the first product I tested and I had never used a concentrate vaporizer before, let alone hit a dab. The included shovel-like dab tool also rocks, rivaling all other included dab tools with concentrate vaporizers.

Best Affordable Portable Weed Vape: XVape Starry

    Courtesy

    Starry

    XVape xvapeusa.com

    $24.75

There’s so much to love about the Starry: it’s incredibly portable, is made of quality materials and the price is absolutely unmatched. It’s one of the best conduction vapes under $100. Additionally, it comes with a concentrate cup that fits perfectly into the flower chamber, allowing you to enjoy a dab if you want. My favorite feature is the 5- or 10-minute shutdown timer so I know when it’s going to turn off automatically. And, with an anodized aluminum body, magnetic lid enclosure and ceramic zirconia mouthpiece, it feels luxurious without breaking the bank.

Best Smart Weed Vape: Puffco Peak Pro

    Courtesy

    Peak Pro

    Puffco puffco.com

    $399.99

Unlike the original Puffco Peak, the Peak Pro has a sensor in the concentrate chamber that communicates with the device, keeping the temperature at where it needs to be regardless of how much you inhale or how much concentrate you put in, giving a controlled and consistent dab experience. The app allows for setting a custom temperature outside of the four pre-programed heat settings, the ability to save custom heat profiles and flashy functionalities like LED customization (although the Stealth mode is useful for public dabbing). If you’d like a dabbing contraption that fits in your pocket, the Peak Plus ($90) is a great option.

    $229.99

Engineered in Germany, the Zeus Arc GT features an accelerometer, built-in multi-tool, three temperature cycles, a long micro USB charger (which I personally appreciated after charging many devices with ridiculously short chargers) and upgradeable firmware. The device has a nice, luxurious weight to it, and the bowl is decently sized. And, if you want to prevent any coughing, the Zeus Arc Iceborn ($35) is an excellent add-on that uses ice filtration to cool down and improve vapor quality.

Everything You Need for the Best Sleep of Your Life

Sleep is essential, but some people aren’t investing in all the things that go into getting a good night’s rest. Your dingy old mattress and flat-as-a-pancake pillow are definitely not doing you any favors while you get your beauty rest.

On average, people spend about 26 years of their life in bed , according to Sleep Matters Club. If that’s not good enough reason to make sure all 227,760 hours of your time in bed is as best as it can be, then we can’t really help you. But if you’re realizing your sleep could use an upgrade, we have recommendations for everything you need to make sure every night’s sleep is the best it can be. From the best pillows to rest your weary head to the most luxe sheets you’ll want to wrap yourself in, these are the best bedroom essentials for every person at every budget.

The Mattress

Mattresses, the bedrock that makes up a good night’s sleep. Whether you like ’em firm or not-so-firm, we found the mattresses that would make Goldilocks happy on the first try.

The Sheets

Shitty sheets lead to shitty sleep. Just keep that mantra in mind when you lie down tonight. Good sheets should get better with wear, and should feel like you’re being wrapped up in your favorite shirt. Bed sheets come in a variety of fabrics, and we found the best in each category and at every budget.

The Pillows

A good night’s sleep can be ruined by a bad pillow. Whether you prefer a pillow that’s firm or soft, your head should be getting the support it needs. Luckily we found nine that do just that.

The Comforter

Some people just can’t sleep without being under the covers. And that applies even when it’s hot as hell out. Get a comforter than can pull double duty: it’s warm when you need it to be, but also cooling to prevent you from overheating. While comforters can be used on their own, make sure to get a duvet cover to keep it in pristine shape for as long as possible.

The Air Purifier

You could probably benefit from an air purifier at night. While you might not feel it while you sleep, waking up with allergens and dust in your system results in a really crappy morning. A good air purifier will keep your air clean while you sleep without disturbing you with a noisy fan or bright lights. Luckily, we found a few air purifiers that meet those expectations.

The Internet’s Favorite Pan Now Comes in a Spring-Ready Color

From Instagram to product reviews, Our Place’s Always Pan has been met with rave reviews — and our site is no exception. Now the pan, which at one time racked up a 30,000-person waitlist, comes in a new Terracotta color that is ready for all your spring and summer cooking.

Terracotta Always Pan

Our Place

$145.00

This one pan was designed to replace your fry pan, sauté pan, steamer, skillet, saucier, saucepan, nonstick pan, spatula, and spoon rest. That’s because the Always Pan works to braise, sear, steam, strain, sauté, fry, boil, serve, and store. Consider it the eight-in-one kitchen item that you’ll be using as often as possible. Basically, if you only had this one pan in your house, you’d still be able to do all of the cooking you did with a larger collection.

The Always Pan comes is made with an exclusive nontoxic, nonstick ceramic coating without the potentially toxic materials. The aluminum body allows for fast, even heat, and the entire thing is about 4 pounds with the lid on. Your order also comes with a nesting beechwood spatula with integrated spoon rest and a custom stainless steel steamer basket. The pan is compatible with all cooktops and has a 10-inch diameter, 2.7-inch depth, and 2.6-quart capacity.

While Terracotta is the newest hue, you can order the Always Pan in six other colors (excluding the recently discontinued lavender): Spice, Blue Salt, Sage, Heat, Steam, and Char. You can order any of them from Our Place for $145.

The one thing that the pan can’t do — hey, even the greatest products may have a downfall — is be put in the oven. But they’re stylish enough that you won’t just look forward to cooking with it on the stovetop, but you’ll be tempted to leave it out as a statement piece.
