For This Fresh Leatherworker, Fusion is the Family Business

In the bustle of Portland’s Chinatown, Martin Martinez places the finishing touches on a rich leather shoulder bag. Beneath its refined, polished appearance lies a story that spans oceans, continents and four generations. It is the story of a family bound by a single craft; the story of Orox Leather.

The History

The tale begins in Oaxaca, Mexico with Don Felipe Martinez Audelo who was, among other things, a ballplayer. To keep his team equipped, Don Felipe developed custom-made baseball gloves and belts for his baseball team, Los Audelos. Over time, his sons grew up alongside Don Felipe, playing baseball and learning the craft of traditional leatherworking.

Don Felipe’s middle son, Pepe, grew the craft into a family business with the help of his brothers, and in so doing ingrained a love of leatherworking in his son José. By early adulthood, José’s prowess as a maker earned him an invitation to teach traditional Mexican leather crafting in Japan. José ended up spending six years in Japan, teaching his trade and learn traditional Japanese techniques. When José returned to Oaxaca, still fascinated with Japanese culture and its craft, he found his son Martin’s interest in craftsmanship was burgeoning.

A New Generation

Having grown up surrounded by his family’s history of craftsmanship, Martin’s interest lay in entrepreneurship and he soon moved to the United States to study business at Portland State University. There, he decided to re-ignite the family trade, and over the course of a decade, he gathered his family together in Portland. There, Orox Leather was born. Combining Oregon (Or) with Oaxaca (ox), the Martinez family business was fully realized in America when they opened shop in Portland in 2012.

Today, Orox Leather’s blend of heritage and craftsmanship produces a unique blend of techniques that feels at once classic, worldly and wholly new. Underpinned by tradition and a deep love for craftsmanship, Orox Leather is a promising fresh face in the world of American leather goods. We sat down with Martin Martinez to get his take on craftsmanship, leatherworking and to learn more about the brand.

Q: It seems now that those who love leather goods have more options than ever. How do you differentiate your products from similar brands?
A:We share the same core value — Made in America —with a focus on craftsmanship and durability. What we try to do is connect at a deeper level because each piece is unique and there’s a story behind it, a depth that comes with a multi-generational family business. My father would stop people wearing his sandals and bags and adjust them, tweak them to be more comfortable or look better. That’s how he operated: he still had a connection to that piece or pair of sandals and he was committed to ensuring the customer was getting the most out of it, no matter how long ago it was purchased from him. This attitude rolls down to all our employees and is the soul of our business.

Orox Leather Company

The Ryoko Duffel, inspired by Japanese aesthetics

Q: Where do you draw inspiration for your products?
A:It starts with my father and grandfather. They were able to conceptualize patterns and silhouettes in their minds. He’s very much a trailblazer, my father. He’ll often meet with a client to get a rough idea and some details of what they’re looking for, and then he sketches it out in his mind. After a few iterations, he’ll have created a finished product. We also draw inspiration from Japanese, European and American brands. Onitsuka Tiger, Hardgraft and Filson come to mind, and being in Oregon, we’ve always been inspired by Nike in terms of the drive to innovate and focus on aesthetics. We’re also surrounded by a lot of shoe enthusiasts in Portland’s Chinatown. It’s a neighborhood that’s attracted a lot of makers and crafters because of cheaper rents, and really fostered a lot of creativity and created a sense of community.

Q: What makes a good bag?
A:Leather needs to age gracefully, transform over time and become unique to you. I like to experiment with different leathers; for example, testing hides with different levels of waxes and oils that act as natural protection. In a bag, space and functionality are key. For example, the Viator Tote is great for travel — I put my camera in there and it has a strap to serves both as a home for our logo and also to seamlessly attach to my suitcase- those are the kind of features that make me love using it. I also want a bag to be as light as a leather bag can be, and spacious.

Orox Leather Company

The Viator Tote

Q: What is often overlooked by manufacturers?
A:Sometimes there are too many materials without stories, with not a lot of thought about how is it going to age, but rather how it looks on the shelf. There isn’t enough thought put to timelessness.

Q: What do you say to people who say your bags are too expensive?
A:I first speak to the materials — we source only the highest quality hardware and hides because that quality is passed on to the end user. I also emphasize the people behind the products. We pay fair wages and take care of our team. That cost of doing business well translates to higher price tags, but we know that it’s worth it. As a self-funded company, we appreciate each and every customer because, through their purchases, they are caring for and supporting our family and community. Maybe our goods are an expensive luxury, but then again, we see that patrons come away with so much more than just a bag.

Q: What are your favorite pieces?
A:The Nuntius X briefcase is one. When I first started building the business, I wanted something that looked professional to bring to meetings, but that would hold up to daily bike rides- my primary mode of transportation. It’s a product that has undergone countless design modifications and updates to evolve it into a perfect briefcase. I still use it today, along with the Viator Tote.

The Nantius X Messenger Bag

Q: What does the future hold for you?
A:We have big aspirations to become a leader in the leather accessories market by creating durable products that are timeless, iconic, and functional. We want to become a more socially responsible company by creating job opportunities in places and demographics in need like the ones in Oaxaca, Mexico. Our home town is full of talented individuals without opportunities to succeed. By creating jobs in those areas it prevents migration into the USA and the loss of culture. Preserving those trades at a good living wage is very important to us. Sourcing the best leathers is another ambition of ours. We want to be using the latest and most innovative leathers in the world, on the cutting edge of the material as it develops. We want to work hard on being at the vanguard of style and sustainability in our sourcing. Model companies like Patagonia are very influential in the direction we want to take with our small family business and we are excited to make it a reality.

Once Lost to Time, TROPIC Resurfaces and It’s Better Than Ever

It’s been emulated, riffed on and even outrightly copied, but there has only ever been one TROPIC dive strap. Originally produced in the 1960s, TROPIC straps were the go-to for divers, explorers, and outdoorsmen who wanted an alternative to traditional steel bracelets and leather straps. Though distinct in style and revered for their utility, TROPIC gradually fell out of production. Once production ceases, deadstock and vintage TROPIC straps were cherished, traded among watch cognoscenti and collectors with as much zeal as their horological counterparts. TROPIC straps became so valued that several strap makers made their own versions of the strap, turning TROPIC from a brand name to a kind of style suggestive of that style of rubber dive strap, much like Band-Aid to adhesive bandages or Xerox to photocopy.

That is, until today.

The One and Only TROPIC

The original TROPIC is back and it’s aiming to recapture its rightful place atop the dive strap heap. The re-vitalized TROPIC — produced under trademark by the Synchron Watch group — uses a new and proprietary vulcanized rubber formula that is optimized to deliver unmatched wearer comfort and quality. Like the original, the new Genuine TROPIC strap shares the same design elements, adhering to the textured ‘tapestry’ surface that made the original a beloved, multi-generational icon.

TROPIC’s deeply embossed back is designed to increase wearer comfort, with subtle perforations for quick drying. The strap’s ends are uniquely shaped to create a seamless transition between a watch case, lugs and the strap. The proprietary vulcanized rubber used to produce each TROPIC rubber dive strap is hypoallergenic and optimized for tensile strength. It also sports new UV resistance and is largely immune to adverse effects from extreme heat or cold. And since this rubber contains no silicone, it does not attract dust or fade from prolonged exposure to sunlight. In short, the new TROPIC is an incredibly solid, thoughtful retooling of the iconic original.

Watch Guy Approved

As watch guys, we’ve often wondered what became of the storied brand and fantasized about its eventual return. That’s why we’re extremely proud to have been selected as an exclusive launch partner for TROPIC. Its distinct retro look is an unparalleled match for any vintage diver, and with three all-new colors — TROPIC will now come in brown, navy and olive, alongside the original black — it’s not hard to find the perfect dive strap for a modern watch. And though it’s only available in 20mm, we’re pretty sure more sizes will be coming down the pike.

In honor of TROPIC’s return to watchdom, we’ve introduced it to the Gear Patrol audience at a special launch price and will be offering free shipping on all domestic orders.

This Hamilton Watch Is the First of Its Kind

Just about every watch guy has, at one time or another, wanted to design his own watch. We’re no different. So when Hamilton approached us about doing a collaboration watch, our collective watch geek genes lit up like horological Christmas trees. We knew that we wanted something robust; capable of riding shotgun on some serious adventures. We also wanted to build something sleek, with a subtle overall look that would be at home in an array of environments. But we also wanted to make a special and distinct watch that felt like Gear Patrol.

Fortunately for us, Hamilton’s lineup of watches is diverse and we were able to find the perfect base model on which to riff. The Khaki Navy Scuba Auto was an easy choice. The sturdy 40mm steel case, screw-down crown, quickset date and uni-directional ratcheting bezel make the Khaki Navy Scuba Auto rugged and utilitarian. With 100m depth rating, it’s got everything you need for plunge beneath the waves yet isn’t a technical diver. And ringing in well under $1000, it’s the kind of watch you can wear hard and not worry about.

A Unique Design

Gear Patrol has always had a foot in the outdoors. Since our early days, we’ve nodded to our wilder side with a touch of blaze orange. To some, the blaze is a marker, a guide, a signal. The orange sweep hand on this watch is at once an homage to our origins and a message to the wearer: find your path, pursue your passion. Against the spartan black dial and bezel, it’s a playful splash of color that turns a standard diver into a unique timepiece.

First of Its Kind

During the process, we learned that Hamilton had never before modified one of its existing models. But rather than shy away, Hamilton championed our design and made brand history; the Khaki Navy Scuba Auto Gear Patrol Edition is the first customized in-line watch produced by the brand. It’s even got a unique model number. We ensured the watch’s versatility by offering it with both a stainless steel bracelet and nylon NATO-style strap.

Everyday Wearer

The watch world is filled to the lugs with limited editions. To fight the hype machine, we decided that we would produce the Gear Patrol watch in rolling batches based on demand. In this way, the Gear Patrol Special Edition is made to be worn, not coveted or cached in a safe somewhere. It’s an everyday wear watch for everyone who wants one. The first batch of pieces launched in November of 2018 and sold out in just a few days. We’re proudly offering the second batch now, exclusively in the Gear Patrol Store.

If you’re just getting into watches and looking for your first mechanical tool watch, or if you’re a hardened watch guy looking for a great everyday wearer, look no further. The Gear Patrol Special Edition is the go-anywhere, do-anything watch you’ll want on your wrist.

The One Wallet You Should Carry Just Got Better

This post is presented by the Gear Patrol Store. Purchasing products from our store supports our editorial efforts.

We’ve been talking about Pioneer Carry wallets since they stormed onto the scene in 2016. We knew the unique formula of simple, modern design and real-life practicality was rare in the EDC space. By developing a hearty ripstop nylon material specifically for wallets, Pioneer Carry set itself apart. It didn’t hurt that they were stronger by weight than steel and water-resistant. And in three democratic colors — blue, black and onyx — they had instant appeal.

But just when we thought we had them figured out, the magicians over at Pioneer Carry launched a brand new design and two fresh colorways, slate and evergreen. They also unveiled a new material — 3PN — a proprietary 3-ply ripstop material that dirt and water repellent. The result is a wallet that is flexible, maintenance-free and designed to be sleeker than leather while retaining a luxurious and modern feel.

Blacker than Black

Pioneer Carry’s original offering was restricted to powder blue and black nylon with white cross stitching. While fetching in it’s own way, there was an obvious opportunity to go a bit stealthier. Then they launched onyx, a matte black nylon with subdied black stitching. We were in love. Now every one of Pioneer Carry’s silhouettes can be had in the stealthy colorway, including the newest model, the Division Billfold.

More closely resembling a traditional bi-fold, the Division Billfold is the largest model in the lineup. But in the revolutionary 10XD material, it’s lighter and slimmer than the comparable leather bifold. Featuring six card slots, two internal slots for business cards and space for bills, it’s the most durable full-sized wallet on the market.

Less Is More

Introducing new models or colors can be divisive, especially in supercharged enthusiast communities. But even quick glance at Pioneer Carry’s new color, slate, confirms we already knew. They nailed it. Subtle and restrained, the new hue feels instantly classic. And with a touch of blue, it’s able to pair well with all your accessories and your favorite pair of jeans.

Shop the entire Pioneer Carry collection at the Gear Patrol Store and enjoy free shipping on all domestic orders.

This is the Strap Your Dive Watch is Missing

This post is presented by the Gear Patrol Store. Purchasing products from our store supports our editorial efforts.

The ISOfrane strap is one of the world’s premier diving bands, with a timeless, functional design that dates back to the 1960s. With its unique look and unparalleled quality, it has set itself apart from the morass of cheap copies as the true king of SCUBA.

Before ISOfrane, dive straps were usually made from rubber. Lacking breathability, they would often blister and crack in extreme conditions. The original ISOfrane straps were manufactured using a compound called isoprene. Isoprene is a colorless, liquid hydrocarbon that is obtained in the processing of petroleum and/or coal tar and is used as a raw, chemical material. Isoprene was far more durable and maintained its looks.

ISOfrane Dive Straps

The original isoprene rubber formula that gave it its soft, strong and waterproof characteristics is intact, but has been updated for the 21st century with hypoallergenic, non-toxic modifications that make it exceedingly kind to the user’s skin – all without using silicone, for maximal dust-resistance which helps the strap to retain its factory-fresh luster for far longer than competing straps. Coming in seven colors, three widths — 20mm, 22mm and 24mm — and with the option of three distinct buckle options, it’s easy to find the ISOfrane that’s perfect for your watch. And whether it’s a weekend warrior or a hardcore tool watch, you won’t want to take it off once you’ve got it strapped to an ISOfrane.

Save $80 On These Iconic Design Watches

You don’t have to be a watch aficionado to know the Braun AW 10 is all about design. Originally released in 1989, the AW 10 speaks to a spartan Bauhaus aesthetic that, at the time, was bold in its simplicity. The design of the original AW 10 — which was a product of the pioneering duo Dietrich Lubs and Dieter Rams — sought to display the time in the most practical and legible way possible. The AW 10 EVO, released last year, is touted as a re-tooling of the original design by Lubs himself. But to stop there is to do the AW 10 and the EVO a serious disservice.

Time vs. Tool

Most watches are concerned with a specific use; dive watches are engineered to withstand the crushing pressure of deep water, chronographs, to capture exact readings of elapsed time on the race track or while navigating in a plane.

But the original AW 10 is about an experience. A flat mineral crystal yields to a simple matte dial with distinct painted hour markers and two simple white baton hands for hours and minutes. Atop sits a custard yellow second hand which happily ticks its way about the contrasting steel and black barrel case. The crown is small and recessed, entirely hidden when worn. Square, straight lugs jut from the top and bottom of the case, almost irreverently, abutting squarely with a slightly tapered black leather strap. All of this gels in a punctuated and straightforward statement: the time is now.

The AW 10 EVO

Walk into any boutique on Madison Avenue and chances are you’d find a reimagined version of some vintage design. A quick glance at the EVO could have you thinking that it too is part of the trend, but in reality, it’s in conversation with the original design, not simply restating it.

The EVO is bigger — 39mm vs. the original 33mm — yet retains it’s pleasingly ascetic styling. The lugs still jut unapologetically from the barrel case but take a 45-degree dive wristward at their terminus as if acknowledging their important role in wearability. Their crown peeks out from beneath the bezel too, and while it disrupts the symmetry of the case, it reminds the onlooker that it too has a function: setting the date.

Braun AW 10 EVO

The AW 10 EVO’s 39mm case feels at home on the modern wrist

The biggest disruption in the original design is the date aperture at the three-o’clock position. Though simple in its own right, it’s adorned with a bright red caret, a not-so-subtle acknowledgment from Lubs that in today’s fast-paced life, knowing the date is in fact important.

The Takeaway

Purists will always turn their noses up at re-imagined icons, but if we’ve learned anything from bourbon and Herman Miller, rethinking what makes a product great often leads to new insights about why we love them in the first place, and, every once in a while, gives rise to a fresh enthusiasm. That conversation between epochs of design is bracing. In this case, the AW 10 EVO has our collective eyebrows raised with a renewed appreciation for this simple, beautiful quartz watch.

Buy the Best Commuter Bike and Save Big

This post is presented by the Gear Patrol Store. Purchasing products from our store supports our editorial efforts.

Since their overwhelmingly successful Kickstarter launch campaign in 2014, Priority Bicycles has been taking on the challenge of building simple, tough-as-nails bikes that rise not just to the need of a good commuter, but also a damn good daily rider. From their initial model, the Classic, as it would come to be known, to now offering six distinct models, all with their trademark design feature, a rust-less, grease-less nearly maintenance-free belt drive system.

In honor of National Bike Month, we’ve teamed up with Priority Bicycles to bring three of their most revered models to the Gear Patrol Store. From today through May 27th, you can purchase a Priority Classic Plus, Continuum or Coast in the Gear Patrol and get free shipping anywhere in the United States. Buy a bike and we’ll throw in a $50 gift card to the Gear Patrol Store with every purchase. Need a helmet? We’ve got you covered there too; for a limited time, get Priority Bicycles 174Hudson Stack helmet for just $65. So, don’t wait. Get out there and ride.

The Bikes:

The Classic Plus

The Priority Bicycles Classic Plus is the premier low maintenance, hassle-free, belt-drive bicycle. It has the award-winning comfortable ride, rust-free & ultralight frame, and three-speed versatility of Priority Bicycles Classic model with additional standard components for more frequent riders and commuters including the grease and rust-free Gates Carbon Drive belt, a front brake for smooth stopping power, and enhanced wheels and pedals for excellent durability. Three frame size options ensure you get the size that’s right for you. Weighing only 25 pounds, the Classic Plus is light and easy to ride. The belt drive keeps your commute clean without worry of grease and grime. An upright and comfortable riding style makes weekend cruises a breeze.

The Continuum Onyx

With the Continuum Onyx Edition, Priority Bicycles has upped simplicity and doubled down on safety; If your ride takes you into the night, front and rear dynamo powered lights will illuminate your ride without the need for batteries or recharging. 360-degree reflective logos and tire beading will increase visibility for urban riders or anyone out on a dark road. Puncture resistant WTB tires with a reflective sidewall help keep you safe, comfortable and seen at night. Other bicycles with similar features and components sell for above $1600. Priority’s customer-direct model enables this all-weather, all-hour commuter for a fraction of the price.

The Coast

Designed, assembled, and tested in coastal climates around the globe, no other beach cruiser has this level of features designed to take on the salt, sand, and water at the beach. Built on a foundation of the Gates Carbon Drive Belt with an ultralight rustproof frame and fork, combined with sealed bearings you’ve got the smoothest ride at the beach. Each bike comes with a traditional beach cruiser foot (coaster) rear brake, a front hand brake, and a double kickstand.

The Gear

The 174Hudson Stack Helmet
174Hudson Stack foldable helmet
A good helmet is a crucial piece of commuter kit, whether you’re cruising on a Citi bike or pedaling your personal two-wheeled pegasus. But when you get where you’re going, lugging it around can be a pain. That’s why the product wizards at Priority Bicycles invented the 174Hudson Stack, a foldable helmet that protects you while you ride and saves on space when you’re at your destination.

About the Gates Carbon Drive Belt System

Every Priority Bike comes with a Gates Carbon Drive Belt system, a rust-less, grease-less, practically maintenance-free solution to the age-old chain drive design. Not only will you do away with dirty hands and marked-up pant legs, but you’ll also enjoy a longer life: Gates Carbon Belts last longer than a traditional chain, and with no stretch, your rides will stay smooth and quieter for longer. When it does get dirty, simply spray with a hose or wipe down with a wet cloth to remove debris.

Note: Gear Patrol Store gift cards will be emailed directly to buyers within 24 business hours of ordering.

This Affordable Commuter Bike Is the One I Use Every Day

This post is presented by the Gear Patrol Store. Purchasing products from our store supports our editorial efforts.

In honor of National Bike Month, we’ve teamed up with Priority Bicycles to bring the most popular commuter bike models into the Gear Patrol Store. We’re so excited about the promotion because we’ve been testing and reviewing Priority for years and have yet to find anyone doing it better. That’s why we chased down Gear Patrol’s Outdoor and Fitness Staff Writer Meg Lappe, who’s been riding her Priority Classic Plus Gotham Edition bike to work ever since her month-long test over a year ago. We learned why she loves bike commuting with her Priority bike and picked up a few tips on how to make your commute a smarter one.
Q:When did you start riding to work, when did you start commuting, how long have you been doing this? Tell me the whole story.
A:I started bike commuting last year, I want to say May of last year. We were testing out a Priority commuter bike, the Priority Classic Plus, that’s basically zero maintenance. Today I ride the Classic Plus Gotham, the all black one. I really like it. I can carry it up three flights of stairs if I really need to, but I also have one of their U-locks, which I’ve just been using for the past year and it’s fared pretty well.
Q: Walk me through your commute and where your bike lives when you’re not riding.
A:It’s about four miles. I live in Cobble Hill. It takes roughly 40 to 45 minutes with traffic lights and everything. I live across the street from a Trader Joe’s and there are four bike racks right across from that. So, I lock it up there. I will say, in the winter, I do not bike commute. So, I lock it up inside, outside my apartment door on the railing. But yeah, for the most part, it lives outside.
Q: Talk me through that: What’s your protocol for locking up your bike in the city to keep it from disappearing?
A:I have two locks. The first is a U-lock that Priority sells which I put through the back tire and frame. The second lock is a standard cable lock that I typically put through like my basket and front wheel and frame — as a back-up of sorts.
Priority-Bikes-Gates-Belt-Drive

The Gates Belt Drive System is rustless and requires no grease.

Q: How do you cross the East River into Manhattan?
A:So, if it’s before 7:30 AM, I will bike across the Brooklyn Bridge. After 7:30, it’s way too crowded for me to bike across. So, then I’ll go across the Manhattan Bridge. The Manhattan Bridge has a separate side of the bridge that’s just for bikes versus the Brooklyn Bridge that’s open.
Q: After you come across one of the bridges, do you use the bike lanes or are you just on normal roads? Are the bike lanes well marked?
A:Google Maps has a great feature that I use a lot; If you tab over to the bike icon it will show you the preferred bike routes around the city. It’s never led me astray — thus far.
Q: So, how long does it take you to cover the four miles?
A:I try and give myself 40 minutes just because then I’m not profusely sweating when I walk in the door, but also then it gives me time to lock my bike up, etc. And with biking, I’ve found you always have to give yourself 5 to 10 extra minutes just because you do have to abide by lights, and you never know if a road is going to be closed for something.
Q: So, you touched on something that I think is also very interesting about commuting to work: “How do I look presentable once I get to the office?” So, do you have any tricks? What’s the skinny on that?
A:So, I am pretty lucky. I pay for a membership at The Wing, which is a women’s co-working space, and they have showers. But if I don’t go there, then I will come straight to the office. I keep body wipes, deodorant, all that kind of stuff in my desk drawer. I’ll typically bring a change of clothes with me in a backpack (I use a run-specific backpack just because it’s easier to hold onto) refresh in the bathroom. It’s great if you have a gym membership or somewhere that you can shower, but it’s not necessary when you have the right accessories on hand and give yourself enough time to cool down post-ride.
Q: There must be times that you bike to work in the morning, but then work goes sideways or something pops up and the bike has to stay overnight here. What’s the extraction plan for the bike that’s locked up at the office? I mean, you just reverse that plan and decide to bike home on a certain day?
A:Yes. I keep a change of clothes here to do the reverse commute. Just an extra tank top, a tee shirt, shorts. And I pretty much always have sneakers here in case I need those.
Q: Let’s talk about your helmet. I know you use the 174Hudson Stack, which is cool because we’ve had it in the Gear Patrol Store for a few months, but I’ve never actually had a conversation with somebody who uses it on a regular basis. What is it about the Stack that you like versus a traditional sort of helmet design? Do you use the folding mechanism?
A:I do use the folding mechanism. I like it because I can just crunch it down to a size that’s no thicker than, a thick textbook, I would say. Then it can go in my backpack. It’s super convenient. It’s not that bulky which is especially nice if I’m going to an event after work or a fancy dinner or something. I’m also not a serious cyclist at all. So, to me, the helmet also signals to other cyclists that I am a commuter.
174Hudson Stack Helmet

The 174Hudson Stack helmet reduces to nearly half its size when stowed.

Q: So, most of our readers know this from our This Week in Gear series, but you’re very active, you’re training all the time. You recently ran a half marathon, right?
A: I just did a half marathon in March. Now I’m training for another half marathon at the end of this month.
Q: So, would you say that you have to be super fit to commute to work?
A:No, I don’t think so. The biggest hurdle for commuting to work is being comfortable on the bike. I really think a big part of it is being in the right mindset. It’s also just a great way to get to work and I prefer it, time and time again, over the subway. I also love using my bike because I go to a lot of events (press previews, lunches, new workout classes) during the day and something that would take 15 or 20 minutes on the subway takes less than 10 minutes. I save a lot of time and money, and I really like that.
Q: So, what about Citi Bike? Did you ever use Citi Bike as a way to commute before you got your Priority?
A:Nope.
Q: Why? It’s not that expensive and there are ample stations across the city.
A:You’re not the first person to ask me that, but I like having my own bike. First of all, my Priority Classic Plus is only 26 pounds. A Citi Bike weighs about 45 pounds. Having something that’s tailored to me and that I know is reliable is really important. I also enjoy the freedom that my bike gives me. Sometimes I want to go places where there aren’t convenient docking stations or where high use means there aren’t bikes available. Last but not least, I’ve had my Priority for almost a year now and I haven’t had to do any maintenance outside of keeping good tire pressure.
Q: Any other tips or tricks?
A:Get a bell. It’s great for alerting people on busy streets and bike paths. And of course, always obey the rules of the road!
