Brooks Takes a New Direction with the Run Within Apparel Collection

It’s no secret that Brooks knows running. Offering top-of-the-line footwear — and trailwear, too — is sort of the brand’s thing. But every now and then, it pays to take a new route.

That’s exactly what the “Run Happy” brand did with the launch of its Run Within Collection. With gear that works on the run, at the gym and anywhere else your sweat sessions take you, this all-new lineup is Brooks’ first step into cross-functional apparel.

But as with any new adventure, it should be approached with a little hesitation. Would this bold new step stay in-stride with other Brooks successes — or would it wind up being a cautionary tale, to stay in the known lane?

Ben Emminger

To find out, we tested the full men’s lineup of Run Within apparel, which included a linerless short, short sleeve top, sleeveless top and crewneck pullover. We wore these test subjects across a wide spectrum of fitness disciplines, as well as around the house during our normal routine. We lifted, stretched, sweat, relaxed and — of course — ran in this collection for a full-scale look at just how inclusive this multi-faceted lineup is.

Here’s what we learned.

The new Brooks collection has simple tops for any workout

Run Within Short Sleeve

Brooks brooksrunning.com

$38.00

  • Moisture-wicking fabrics for a dry, comfortable workout
  • Antimicrobial finish to keep smells at bay
  • Only one colorway
  • Classic fit might be too loose for some

The two tops offered in the Run Within Collection are nearly identical in their makeup. Both feature Brooks’ DriLayer fabric that provides a quick-drying, moisture-wicking component to each silhouette. This was much appreciated during strenuous training sessions out in the sun, keeping us cool and focused on the tasks at hand. The lightweight, classic cut of both the Short Sleeve and Sleeveless tops is comfortable and roomy, too, but could be a little too much for those wanting a closer-to-skin fit.

Additionally, the Sleeveless seams did sit awkwardly in our armpits, but that could vary depending on your shoulder span. For our style preference, we leaned more toward the Short Sleeve, but there’s no wrong answer, really. Just good, simple tops that work well in any fitness activity.

Run Within Sleeveless

Brooks brooksrunning.com

$36.00

  • Sleeveless cut works great as an undershirt or main top
  • Four-way stretch for a full range of motion
  • Sleeveless seams can be uncomfortable in the armpits
  • Only one colorway

Run Within’s crewneck is an immediate everyday option

Our favorite piece

Run Within Crew

Brooks brooksrunning.com

$75.00

  • Lightweight and extremely versatile
  • Semi-fitted design that’s form-fitting in all the right areas
  • Thinner construction means this top is slightly see-through
  • Side pocket could be larger

This versatile crewneck pullover quickly became a daily pick, whether hitting the trails, hitting the weights or taking in a relaxing day at home.

The lightweight construction provided just enough coverage to keep us cozy, and the breathable fabric helped us stay cool once we started ramping up our workouts. And despite having tackled multiple sessions and activities, the antimicrobial finish kept things fresh and funk-free.

While we’d like to have had a larger side pocket for easier storage, this is one top that’s sure to stay in our rotation for quite some time.

These Brooks shorts stretch your training possibilities

Run Within 7-inch Linerless Short

Brooks brooksrunning.com

$48.00

  • Rear pocket comfortably holds keys and other essentials
  • 4-way stretch provides excellent range of motion
  • Inseam might sit higher on the thigh for some
  • Would like to see a lined option

If comfort is non-negotiable, the Run Within Linerless Shorts are sure to leave you pleased. While these bottoms were capable of any fitness endeavor, we especially welcomed the soft, stretchy fabric in our running and yoga sessions. The stay-put elastic waistband was comfortable and stayed secure throughout movement without that intrusive wear along the hips.

The convenient rear pocket was also an added perk, having plenty of space to hold our car keys or smartphone when out on a trail. And while we were initially nervous of how these light-as-air shorts would handle a wash cycle, they seemed to hold up respectfully; no rips or compromised seams.

Brooks Run Within: the Verdict

As a whole, the latest Brooks apparel collection seems to be as multi-faceted as it claims. While there certainly are more technical options out there, this lineup provides plenty of affordable comfort and versatility to those wanting to revamp their fitness wardrobe. From the road, to the gym and everywhere in-between, the Brooks Run Within Collection has you covered head-to-toe.

How This Smart Rower Revolutionized My Post-Pandemic Workout Routine

If I’m being honest, CrossFit has been my thing for quite some time now. I started about a decade ago and never really looked back. Then the pandemic hit. CrossFit boxes closed. Big box gyms closed. Fitness studios closed. And so began the at-home training movement.

The trend actually wasn’t new, but the shutdown threw it into hyperdrive. People began gobbling up fitness equipment to the point where it became almost impossible to get. Fortunately for me, I was a former trainer and I had enough dumbbells, kettlebells and more at home to continue my CrossFit style training seamlessly. There was, however, one piece of equipment missing in my life… a rowing machine.

That’s when I found the NordicTrack RW900— or, more accurately, rediscovered it. I first came across the RW900 at an iFit fitness event a few years back. I loved it! So when the prospect of having to run daily for cardio hit me, I knew I needed to make a change. The constant pounding that excessive running puts on your joints can really take its toll. Looking for something more advanced than the CrossFit-classic Concept 2, I rekindled my love affair with the RW900.

man using nordictrack

NordicTrack

Since then, I have not set foot in a CrossFit box or a gym of any kind, yet I have continued to maintain and maybe even surpass my previous level of fitness thanks to this single piece of equipment. Yes it costs $1,599 — or $1,899 for the 2022 edition, featuring a tilting touchscreen and inertia-enhanced flywheel — but as you’ll see in the rest of this article, it’s a very worthwhile investment.

I still continue to follow my CrossFit programming at home on a daily basis and the rower’s manual row feature slots in perfectly. Whether rowing for calories or distance, you can integrate it seamlessly into any workout you come up with on your own. The manual feature, however, is only the tip of the iceberg. Over time and especially now while indoors during the winter months, I’ve come to really enjoy the RW900 for so much more.

nordictrack rower

NordicTrack

The secret sauce is iFit, an interactive subscription-based fitness program ($39/month for a family membership) that offers a wide variety of workouts available right at your fingertips. Simply tap the high-definition touchscreen monitor (a unique feature) and take your pick. If you are looking to row in a studio setting, you have your choice of sessions that are strictly rowing or ones that incorporate both the rower and/or bodyweight or weight-based exercises. Although it’s not necessary to complete any of these workout, NordicTrack’s Select-A-Weight dumbbells ($499 $399) are a nice addition to this type of training. You can adjust them on the fly — from 10 to 55 pounds — at any time so you always have the weight you need.

Beyond the studio mode, you can branch out and explore the world, literally. The iFit menu diversifies your training by whisking you to far-flung areas via its global workout series. You’ll be guided by Olympic rowers through rowing-specific workouts on location in places like the Senegal River or the River Thames. These speed-, power- or endurance-specific workouts are certain to challenge your body while captivating your mind as you take in the beautiful surroundings.

man putting away nordictrack rowing machine

NordicTrack

Whether you choose to be in-studio or on location, the iFit trainers are top notch. I have found their enthusiasm to be contagious as well as motivating. Their coaching, although virtual, is also quite informative. Over the past few months, I have made many adjustments based on their tips that have helped improve my rowing tremendously. As I have improved, the online program has virtually adjusted the fitness level on my programming, thereby providing workouts that consistently continue to challenge me.

Aside from the workouts themselves, I also like the rower’s Bluetooth capabilities, how smooth and quiet the rower is and its ability to collapse, fold in half and not take up much room to stow. If I have one criticism, it is that this last part can be a bit tricky to handle at first. As a deluxe, full-size rower, it is by no stretch of the imagination light or small and can be rather unwieldy and difficult to fold and move from place to place. For that reason, I would say it’s a better fit for bigger places where you can set it and forget it, as opposed to smaller apartments — where it might be easy to set it in the corner and literally forget it.

And that would be a shame, because if you haven’t gathered already, this rower really rocks.

Roll Away Back Pain With the Chirp Wheel+

Blame it on work stress, bad sleep or just plain old slouching, it’s hard to avoid feeling back tightness and pain. Even though it’s so common (and can impact your well being so dramatically), it can be hard to justify spending time visiting (and forking over cash to) a chiropractor or physical therapist when you’re simply looking for quick fix for that stubborn knot in your lower back or near your shoulders. This is where Chirp’s Wheel+ comes in. Coming in four separate pressure levels — Gentle, Firm, Focus or Deep Tissue — simply stick the wheel between your shoulder blades and… well, roll. The contoured spinal canal allows you to target back and neck muscles on either side of the spine as you rock back and forth. While the convenience and portability of the new four Wheel+ options and travel case are a great reason to invest in Chirp’s back benefits, the company’s made it even easier — get the new Chirp Wheel+ 4-Pack for $99.99 (a $95 Savings) during Chirp’s Holiday Sale.

The Best Pre-Workout

How many and exactly what ingredients are in pre-workout vary greatly depending on the brand. However, there are a few key ingredients most pre-workouts will have because they have been shown to aid in athletic performance. Here are the five most common ingredients and what they do.

Caffeine
Caffeine is a natural stimulant that comes in the form of beans or leaves that are most commonly found in coffee and tea. Its largest benefit for athletes is on the central nervous system to help reduce the perception of fatigue and/or pain.

Beta-Alanine
Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning your body produces it naturally. A favorite ingredient for Jason Kozma, winner of a Mr. America title, suggests beta-alanine “for the lactic acid buffering performance enhancement.” It supports the production of carnosine, which helps buffer acid levels in your muscles to delay muscle fatigue, ultimately allowing you to push harder and longer. Just a heads up on one common side effect — at higher doses you may feel tingling over your skin.

Creatine
Creatine is found naturally in our muscles. It aids in the production of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which supplies the muscles with short, intense bursts of energy. By supplementing with creatine you can potentially increase the production of ATP, thus improving short, powerful bursts of exercise. Creatine is also thought to increase muscle size and strength.

L-Citrulline & L-Arginine
Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid. Its primary benefit to athletes is that it triggers the production of arginine, another non-essential amino acid. Arginine is then converted into nitric oxide which allows muscles to acquire more oxygen and nutrients and aids in the removal of metabolic waste. More oxygen and nutrients flowing to your muscles allows them to work more efficiently, while the removal of metabolic waste helps you recover faster.

Branched Chain Amino Acids
Branched Chain Amino Acids or BCCAs are shown to stimulate muscle growth and decrease delayed muscle soreness. The three non-essential amino acids that make up BCCAs are leucine, isoleucine, and valine.

Are Recovery Boots Worth It? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

A version of this story first appeared in Gear Patrol Magazine. Subscribe today

For years now, pneumatic compression sleeves — aka “recovery boots” — have been used by professional athletes in an effort to speed up recovery and enhance performance. NBA stars such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant swear by them, as does half the NFL. But their lofty price tags beg the question, do recovery boots make sense for everyday athletes? Hell, do they even work? Here’s what you need to know.

First off, what are recovery boots?

Recovery boots use a technique called intermittent pneumatic compression originally designed to treat patients suffering from lymphedema, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). They’ve become a fixture at gyms and physical therapy offices for the purpose of helping athletes flush metabolic waste from their bodies after grueling workouts. Recently, major brands have begun offering consumer versions for home use.

therabody
While designs vary from brand to brand, the general premise is the same: a pump fills a pair of inflatable boots with air, starting at your feet and squeezing up your legs like a tube of toothpaste.

Therabody

How do they work?

While designs vary from brand to brand, the general premise is the same: a pump fills a pair of inflatable boots with air, starting at your feet and squeezing up your legs like a tube of toothpaste.Theoretically, this type of dynamic compression increases blood flow to tired muscles, flushing out unwanted toxins that naturally result from working out and reducing inflammation from small muscle tears.

Are there any other benefits?

Improved circulation, reduced inflammation and reduced recovery time are the main reasons both pro and amateur athletes reach for recovery boots. According to some physicians, as well as the brands that sell the boots, they offer other benefits, too: increased flexibility, lower levels of muscle soreness and better injury prevention.

What does the science say?

Here’s where things get weird. Pneumatic compression’s efficacy is well-studied in the medical field, with experts mostly agreeing that recovery boots help patients suffering from lymphedema or DVT (in other words, people with compromised circulation). But what about healthy individuals — like, say, elite athletes at the top of their game? Depends whom you ask.

Generally, recovery boots easy to use, easy to store and feel really, really good.

One 2018 study, published in the International Journal of Exercise Science, found that daily use of recovery boots “significantly decreased” muscular swelling and other consequences of working out. But another study, published in the same journal just last year, found that pneumatic compression “offered little to no benefit in recovery” when used by healthy subjects.

normatec
Experts mostly agree that recovery boots help patients suffering from lymphedema or DVT (in other words, people with compromised circulation). But what about healthy individuals — like, say, elite athletes at the top of their game? Depends whom you ask.

Normatec

Has Gear Patrol tested them?

Yes, we’ve tested various recovery boots from leading manufacturers. Generally, they’re easy to use, easy to store and feel really, really good. Though the jury’s still out on the physiological benefits, there’s something to be said for their passive approach to recovery, especially for athletes who tend to cut corners on stretching or self-massaging with a foam roller. These boots do the work for you, while you catch up on your Netflix queue.

Any downsides or risks?

Numbness in your legs may occur if the pressure setting is too high. However, there are no major downsides to using recovery boots, even if the science doesn’t necessarily check out. The biggest risk is spending a bunch of money on a tool that certainly feels good but doesn’t actually work as advertised. Speaking of money …

How much do they cost?

Recovery boots don’t come cheap. Hyperice, the leader in the space, offers several different packages — including additional items for your hips and upper body — under the brand name Normatec. Basic boots start at $899 and quickly escalate from there. Therabody, which makes the Theragun, came out with its own line of recovery boots earlier this year. The RecoveryAir costs $699 and comes in three sizes — small, medium and large — while a Pro version, with more control settings, will set you back $1,299.

Editor’s note: Therabody’s products are currently discounted as part of a Black Friday promotion, with the RecoveryAir available for $499 and the Pro for $999.

therabody
Both Hyperice and Therabody offer massage guns, which retail for just a couple hundred bucks (though far cheaper options abound). Massage guns are more active in their approach, employing percussive therapy to break up lactic acid and increase blood flow.

Therabody

Are there cheaper alternatives?

If you fantasize about the possibility of sitting in front of your TV for hours while getting a leg massage, be prepared to shell out. However, recovery is a growing category, with new products launching seemingly every day.

Both Hyperice and Therabody offer massage guns, which retail for just a couple hundred bucks (though far cheaper options abound). Massage guns are more active in their approach, employing percussive therapy to break up lactic acid and increase blood flow; of course, they require you to be more active in using them, too. If you find yourself on the road a lot, they’re also far more portable.

You could also just buy yourself a foam roller, which will set you back anywhere from $10 to $40. Though less impressive than a pair of state-of-the-art recovery boots, foam rollers are pretty effective at targeting sore muscles. And you can still use one in front of the TV.

So, what’s the verdict?

An exciting product with a lot of promise, recovery boots are anything but a straight for-ward buy — especially for everyday athletes. There just haven’t been enough studies to justify the current price of entry. But like with some supplements, if you’re a hardcore athlete who likes to stay on the bleeding edge of sports science, the cost may be an easier pill to swallow.

Do You Really Need a Smart Home Gym?

When gyms shutdown because of COVID-19, consumers scrambled to find new ways to maintain a fitness regimen. Home gym equipment sales surged, with internet-connected at-home fitness-gear maker Peloton reporting a 66 percent boost in business in May and a whopping 176 per-cent increase by September.

gear patrol issue 16
A version of this story first appeared in Gear Patrol Magazine. Subscribe today

NordicTrack, Tempo, Tonal, Technogym and many other brands joined in on the fun. Since the pandemic began, it seems like every fitness brand on the planet has pushed some version of the smartest, hardest-work-ing, AI-powered, on-demand personal train-er, rep counter and new best friend in the shape of a bike, rowing machine, vertical climber or … mirror.

In theory, with everything shuttered, the pandemic was the perfect time to hunker down, focus, and get into the best shape ever. But according to a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, we spent less time with our new fitness purchases and more time doomscrolling online, packing on the pounds in the process (hello,Quarantine 15).

When you look in the mirror — even if it’s a Mirror — you have to be disciplined to do the work.

There are ample benefits to training at home: cleaner showers, fewer idiots leaving gum in the water fountain. Plus, there’s always parking. But only a dummy would stock up on the most expensive smart at-home fitness equipment without thinking it through first.

Research published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health suggests that technology (apps and trackers) can promote increased exercise during free time. But the study was conducted in 2017, well before the flood of smart gyms and the pandemic. Also, the long-term benefits and retention rates were unclear, and the study’s authors found that the tech didn’t adequately engage those who need it most — inactive adults.

In other words, if you had a gym member-ship pre-pandemic and opted not to use it, shelling out for a pricey set of Bluetooth-enabled dumbbells that count reps for you won’t magically give you massive biceps. The bottom line is what it has always been: when you look in the mirror — even if it’s a Mirror — you have to be motivated and disciplined to do the work yourself. Day after godforsaken day.

apple fitness plus
From Apple Fitness+ to Centr to Nike Training Club and others, there’s no shortage of low- or no-cost ways to try out different fitness options at home.

Apple

Toward that end, a truly “smart” home gym features equipment you’ll actually use and that works within your budget. If that includes the shiny new gadget with the bells and whistles, so be it. If it doesn’t, figure out what you’re inclined to remain consistent with and invest in it. With the right mindset and info, you can rock your whole body with nothing more than an adjustable kettlebell, a pull-up bar and some resistance bands, after all.

Whatever you choose, there’s no shortage of quality digital services for those who don’t want to go to or return to a gym. Many of these programs — including Peloton, Chris Hemsworth’s Centr and Apple Fitness+ — offer up to a month free before charging your credit card. (Heck, the award-winning Nike Training Club doesn’t charge a dime, ever.)

Trying out these options is a stress-free— and free-free! — way to explore multiple modalities and personalities to find content that suits you and your interests instead of chaining you to whatever your smart gym’s library serves up. They are also super convenient. You can access workouts from any-where via multiple devices: smartphone, tablet, TV or computer.

And should you want to move on to an-other activity or service, you can cancel and not be stuck with a hulking dust collector disguised as an exercise bike. Now that’s smart.

Is Seaweed the Sustainable Performance Fabric of the Future?

With the drop of Satisfy’s American Desert line, the Parisian running brand introduces a sustainable bio-based fabric for post-run recovery that’s plucked from the ocean. The new batch of Cosmetic Tees — classic tees, muscle tees, and long-sleeved shirts adorned with photography by Jungjin Lee — feature seaweed-derived SeaCell, a fiber with health and environmental advantages that, for some, might be worth the $200-plus price tag.

Seaweed is loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and taking advantage of its beneficial properties isn’t anything new. For thousands of years, seaweed has been harvested for food, fuel, fertilizer, skincare, medicine and recently, even skis. The Ancient Romans used it to dress wounds (it’s still being used in medical innovations today), while 17th Century Japanese textile makers used seaweed to make clothing stronger. Now, modern technologies have further adapted the marine plant’s usability, incorporating it into fabric production to create garments that lock the health benefits into wearable fabrics.

“The idea of incorporating SeaCell into our Cosmetic Tees was to create a post-run collection that accelerated the recovery process,” explains Satisfy founder Brice Partouche. “[These garments] have an anti-oxidative capacity which eliminates free radicals while caring for the wearer’s skin.”

man walking in desert

Left: Getty Images/Douglas King; Right: Satisfy

After a run, natural moisture levels enable an active exchange of those restorative substances between the shirt and skin, which can repair cellular damage, reduce inflammation and soothe itchiness. While wearing a seaweed-woven shirt might not offer T-1000-like regeneration, any improvement in oxidative stress is more than any other T-shirt can do.

The environmental impact of this seaweed-based fabric is also worth shouting out. SeaCell is 100 percent biodegradable and produced solely from sustainable raw materials—seaweed and wood. “The seaweed is first washed, dried, carefully ground and then incorporated into an organic cotton fiber,” explains Partouche. In case you’re thinking that you’d be wearing a seaweed shirt held together with a bit of cotton, it’s really the other way around; the cotton-to-seaweed ratio is 80-to-20.)

It’s also sustainably harvested, removing only the part that can regenerate and leaving it entirely untreated, retaining all its organic value. Production is carbon neutral and takes place in a closed loop with no chemicals released as waste. The result: a wearable fiber that isn’t wreaking havoc on the planet.

man wearing cactus shirt

Satisfy

From an environmental standpoint, SeaCell and technologies like it (there are a few players in the wearable seaweed game) can be pretty revolutionary. Many of today’s fabrics are petroleum-derived, which presents a host of thorny problems. Woven from plastic-based acrylic, nylon, spandex and polyester, these clothes often end up in landfills — textiles make up a good chunk of the stuff we throw away. In addition to using a shit-ton of chemicals, water and energy, there’s the heavy cost of greenhouse gas emissions and the microplastic pollution that ends up in the air, land and oceans.

Some companies, Satisfy included, are mitigating damage by switching to recycled fabrics (the brand’s ReNylon material is produced from upcycled nylon in a fully chemical-free recycling process). Garment makers should be celebrated for shifting towards more sustainable production. Getting plastic bottles and fishing nets out of waterways to be repurposed for apparel is certainly cause for recognition.

But while these materials are recyclable, they still aren’t biodegradable or compostable. Incorporating game-changing technologies like SeaCell takes “eco-friendly” to the next level. In other words, when you add the benefits together, a seaweed T-shirt might be the best thing you can wear — for your health and for the planet’s.

The Most Comfortable and Innovative Fitness Gear of October 2021 is Here

Fall fitness can be a fickle friend. When searching for activewear, shoes, accessories and outerwear that can ride the thin line of fluctuating temperatures that characterize this season, one has to keep multiple variables in mind: cool, crisp mornings that demand layers, which segue into blazing hot afternoons where a thin t-shirt and shorts will do, which crash right back into chilly evenings that necessitate long layers.

Pro tip: Rather than pack an entire duffel with separate items of clothing for each change in the day, go for multi-use activewear that naturally insulates, like merino wool. Layer up by pairing short and long-sleeve tees meant to wick moisture with lightweight and windproof running jackets. Slide on sneakers built to perform in a variety of environments.

Fall fitness is all about making the most out of the least amount of gear. With strategic layering and material choices, you can stay comfortable and efficient. Here are our top choices for this October.

Get Strong This Summer with Future Fitness

  • Brand: Future
  • Price: $19 for the first month, $149/month after that
  • From: future.co

If you’re unfamiliar with Future Fitness, the digital platform that delivers personal training anytime and anywhere, you are seriously missing out. We spent a week with Future focused on improving our running (check it out here), but with the vast amount of elite coaches they offer training programs with, we needed more than just a week to experience it all. This time around, we focused on strength training.

    gps

    Gear Patrol Studios

There’s no doubt that the gym can be an intimidating place, especially if you aren’t confident in what you’re doing or familiar with all of the equipment. Our tester wanted to focus on building strength without being chained to the gym — particularly with summer weather on the horizon. Luckily, Future offers the flexibility and customization that allows you to work out from anywhere. Our tester matched with Becca Mehling, a nationally ranked athlete who specializes in functional movement and Olympic weightlifting. Mehling has been competing at the national level for three years and taps into her varied experience to support clients by focusing on movement and skills to help them feel stronger in their everyday lives.

    What We Like

In terms of gear, our tester had a yoga mat, mini band and dumbbells, but that didn’t stop Mehling from putting together a solid plan focused on building strength. The weekly workouts included foundational movement, power day, a midweek regeneration focusing on stretching and yoga poses (to let your body recover), total body strength and a finish strong workout and weekend run. The schedule was comprehensive, with movements that targeted each part of the body, but most importantly it was doable. The longest workout was 44 minutes and most averaged around 35 minutes, which made it pretty hard to use being busy as an excuse to skip a workout. But don’t let the short timeframes lead you on, each session was jam-packed with dynamic movements that targeted muscles while keeping the heart rate up.

A key to building strength, especially with weights, is form. The wrong position in a squat or lunge can do some serious damage to your knees. Future makes it easy to ensure that you’re using the correct form, and you feel anything but alone when doing the workouts from home. With personalized audio coaching and a video demonstration showing how the move is done, Future’s platform makes it dead simple to make sure you’re doing everything correctly. Plus, with a “record my form” feature, you can record yourself doing the reps, send it to your coach, and receive almost immediate feedback. Our tester was feeling pain in the knees during the side lunges, and after sending a video to Mehling, she was able to make sure they were using the correct stance to alleviate any pressure in the knees.

    gps

    Gear Patrol Studios

It’s also worth noting that Future coaches can tailor your workouts to whatever you have on hand. While our tester had a yoga mat, mini band and dumbbells, you might not — you might not have any traditional workout equipment. The beauty of Future is that because it’s personalized, coaches can make something unique to you. If you want to improve your strength like our tester did, Future coaches can design your workouts around bodyweight exercises — or even using household items as weights and workout equipment.

    Who It’s For

    gps

    Gear Patrol Studios

A lot of fitness systems tout a one-size-fits-all, “this app is for everyone” approach, so you would be forgiven for being skeptical when Future promises a similar silver bullet. But unlike other apps, Future’s modular and customizable approach, which pairs you with a coach to help realize your goals, means that it truly is “an app for everyone.”

People who don’t want to spend hours in the gym in order to meet their fitness goals will particularly enjoy working out with Future. With workouts that are created based on your lifestyle and your setup, you can crush whatever fitness goals you have without altering your day-to-day. If you are away every weekend this summer, or if you are up early with your kids, Future coaches will work with you to make a plan that will maximize your time and make sure you don’t have to sacrifice living your life in order to get in shape.

    Verdict

Future is the personal training of, well, the future. It gives you a hands-on approach to meet your fitness goals at a fraction of the price of a traditional personal trainer. Plus, with an extensive list of elite coaches, you can meet your goals no matter what they are and no matter what you have planned this summer.

Gear Patrol readers can try their first month of Future for just $19, simply click through at the link below.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Proves That Adjustable Dumbbells Are Worth It

I should get one important point out of the way right off the bat: Adjustable dumbbells are not the ideal weight training solution. In a perfect world, you live in a house with a large garage or basement or gym and you have access to a full rack of standard dumbbells from 10 pounds through 100 — the kind that are fixed, easy to handle, and allow you wide freedom of movement.

But alas, few us of have that kind of space, that kind of money, or that kind of significant other — i.e. the type who tolerates several thousand pounds of industrial-looking metal racked up against a wall.

Sure, you can find such weights at a gym, but there’s the whole, you know, pandemic thing. That can make it tricky for many of us to comfortably return to such spaces, meaning an interim (or possibly permanent) solution is necessary. And that’s where the adjustable dumbbell truly shines.

The Bowflex SelectTech552 is one of the adjustable dumbbell OGs. Contained within each unit is essentially 15 sets of weights, from 5 to 52.5 pounds. They’re adjustable through the first 25 pounds in 2.5-pound increments, providing a micro-range with lower-weight exercises, and use an intuitive dial system for weight selection. I got to give a pair of 552s a whirl, and I have to say, they sure beat the crap out of the adjustable pair that I got back at Sports Authority 20 years ago for about $50. (Though to be fair, my dad bought me those. Thanks, Dad!)

Here’s everything you need to know about them.

What We Like

Intuitive Weight Selection

A vaguely intelligent monkey — most monkeys — could get the hang of the weight selection system on the 552s. It’s quick and intuitive: rotate the large selector knob on either side of the dumbbell to the proper weight, pull up, and… that’s it. The weights seat and re-seat easily, and you can even select uneven weight distribution for special exercises should you so choose. Otherwise, you simply match the weight number on both dials — located on each end of the dumbbell — and that’s the weight you get. In other words, once both dials read “25,” you’ll get 25 pounds of total weight on the dumbbell (not 25 pounds on each side). It’s an easy system that simply works.

Lots of Weight

As I mentioned, the 552s go up to 52.5 pounds each, which is plenty of weight for all sorts of stuff: dumbbell presses and curls, dumbbell squats, triceps extensions, farmer carries and more. If you lift super heavy and you need something heavier, well… you’ll have to look elsewhere. (Bowflex offers the SelectTech 1090, which goes up to 90 pounds, for $799). But the 552s offer plenty of weight for the average person doing workouts at home, and the ergonomics are such that you can also use them for creative moves like deadlift variations.

Replacing an Entire Set of Dumbbells

They live up to their promise, meaning you no longer need an entire rack of weights. The 552s conveniently offer a solution that’s portable — if heavy — and allows you to legitimately work out at home. And they really are far better designed and constructed than my old-school adjustable dumbbells, the kind that use bare metal plates and giant steel wing nuts that invariably come loose as you’re heaving weight around. It’s worth noting that the 552s work in concert with Bowflex’s free SelectTech training app, but I haven’t tried it yet. I have my own workout routines that I follow, as I imagine most of you reading do, too.

Watch Out For

bowlfex 552

Bowflex

Wobbliness

I’m doubtful one of the 552s is going to come apart when positioned above my face during a skullcrusher, but it feels like there’s a chance, because the plates wobble slightly as you use the dumbbell. The entire 552 selector mechanism is brilliant, but the fact that the plates shift a bit is a slight cause for concern, and I wonder if it can’t be addressed in future iterations. (Perhaps my fears are unfounded, but it’s nerve-racking to have 50 pounds of wobbly, plastic-coated steel positioned a foot above your nose.) If there were a way to improve the connection to the bar such that the plates were seated tighter, that would do a lot for peace of mind.

Awkward for Certain Exercises

If you don’t have a barbell at home — I don’t — then you might sometimes use dumbbells for deadlift variations. Gripping a standard dumbbell by the side works fine for various types of lifts, but it’s a bit awkward to grip a 552. Because the plates progress from smaller to larger, outside-in, you end up gripping the dumbbell from one of the smaller plates, which doesn’t feel sturdy or give you as much surface area to handle. Again, it’s mostly a psychological consideration — and it won’t apply to everyone — but it made these lifts a little more difficult. I could imagine a more conventional design, such as the JaxJox DumbbellConnect, being a bit easier to handle — though I haven’t tried that system myself.

Not the Handsomest Option

Speaking of those JaxJox dumbbells, they are a bit more aesthetically pleasing. The 552’s vibe is highly industrial, the red accents aren’t my jam, and they’d probably look right at home in a hardscrabble tent gym on a forward operating base in the Middle East. Yes, these things are pretty great — they just wouldn’t be my first choice of decor in my bedroom, is all I’m saying.

Is It For Me?

You’ve made it this far in this review, so probably. If you’re dedicated to working out, pandemic be damned, and you want to continue to lift reasonably heavy, then you really need a pair of adjustable dumbbells. (Or a barbell, but that’s a whole different story.) This set is intuitive, easy to use, and decent-looking. They’re not cheap, but they’re much cheaper than a full weight rack. And if you’re dedicated to home fitness, it’s a small price to pay for years of use — especially if you’re no longer paying gym fees.

Verdict

I dig the 552s — a lot. While the wobbliness of the plates does give me pause, after examining the dumbbells to ensure their structural integrity, I am confident they are not going to result in my death. They’re portable, intuitive, versatile, and not unreasonably expensive considering their various use cases and build. If you need to lift heavier than 52 pounds each, go for something like the 1090s, but otherwise, the 552s are pretty damn great. I see myself using them for many years to come.

The Best Percussion Massage Guns of 2021

You know the feeling: the all-too-familiar post-workout aching muscle hobble. The kind of uncomfortable feeling that could leave you sidelined with soreness for days. Yet, day after day, we all bear the sometimes-debilitating pain like a badge of honor. It’s considered a sign your hard work and sweat paid off and that toned body you desire is just a few more workouts away.

This painful, yet oddly rewarding, feeling in your muscles is something called delayed onset muscle syndrome, or DOMS, and it can legitimately slow you down. One 2012 study noted: “DOMS can affect athletic performance by causing a reduction in joint range of motion, shock attenuation and peak torque.” The authors go on to say, if not addressed, premature return to exercise could result in “unaccustomed stress to be placed on muscle ligaments and tendons.”

But alas, what can ya do?

man using hyperice hypervolt plus

Hyperice

“Massage guns can play a role in recovery to help reduce one’s perceived pain levels and minimize muscle soreness of DOMS,” says Bob Otto, physical therapist at Climb On Physical Therapy. Massage guns work through two modalities — vibration therapy and percussive stimulation to soft tissue — depending on their power.

“The main difference is that percussive therapy reaches deeper into the muscle,” explains Dr. Jason Wersland, DC, founder and Chief Wellness Officer of Therabody. “While vibration therapy feels good on the surface of the body, it’s a “global” experience as opposed to a targeted one. Percussive therapy targets treatment areas by reaching deep enough into the muscle to increase the amount of blood flow and oxygen needed for efficient treatment and recovery.”

On the surface, it can be hard to distinguish between different massage guns, but having tested a number of them, I can say there is a marked difference across the price gradient. Pricing can be as low as $30 on Amazon and tops out at $600 for professional grade.

hydragun

Hydragun

The most notable differences can be found in quality of build and two key performance stats called stall force and amplitude. Stall force is the amount of pressure needed for the gun to stop applying perpendicular force into the muscle. Essentially the gun’s power peaks. Amplitude is a measure of how much distance the massage gun head can travel back and forth.

Budget guns will have a stall force of around 20 to 30 pounds and an amplitude of 8 to 10mm, while mid- and higher-tier guns will have 40 to 50 pounds of stall force and 12mm to 16mm of amplitude. These numbers alter the effectiveness of the device and whether it provides vibration therapy or percussive stimulation. If there’s not enough perpendicular force applied to your soft tissue and the amplitude is not great enough for the head to travel off the body, the gun will not reach deep muscles. It’s a bit like the difference between the tickle of a Swedish massage and the potency of a deep tissue one.

If you’re just looking for temporary relief from sore muscles and are not concerned with the potential sports performance benefits, the less expensive guns will be more than suitable. However, if your primary goal is to aid fitness recovery and performance, we suggest spending between $200 and $600. We’ve spent hours pounding our sore, achy muscles, to land upon the following picks.

Best Overall Massage Gun

Brands like Theragun and Hyperice have dominated the massage gun marketplace, and rightfully so because they make some of the best. However, over time new imitators have starting producing worthy competitors. One such brand is Ekrin, a company started by two collegiate athletes devoted to “improving athletic performance through muscle recovery and injury prevention.” In a head-to-head comparison against competitor guns, the Ekrin B37 outperformed in every notable stat – stall force, amplitude, noise and battery life. And it has a much more appealing price point.

The B37 offers a whopping 56 pounds of stall force from a 12mm amplitude head, more than enough to reach the deepest of muscle knots with percussive force. The impressive eight hours of battery life outlasts every gun we tested by leaps and bounds. With five speeds ranging from 1400 to 3200 rpm, the B37 is surprising quiet for such a powerful engine. It comes standard with four different head attachments — a flat, bullet, round foam and fork neatly tuck in a hard carrying case with the gun.

What you don’t get with the B37 is name recognition and a Bluetooth-connected app. But with a 30-day return policy and lifetime warranty, you don’t have anything to lose by giving it a shot.

Best Upgrade Massage Gun

Theragun PRO

Theragun pioneered the percussive gun and has long been considered the gold standard. The flagship model, the Theragun Pro, is professional-grade quality and trusted by physical and massage therapists, chiropractors and sports professionals. Side-by-side against other massage guns, there’s no comparison. It’s better built, more powerful, easier to grip, gives a better massage, and just provides all-around a better experience.

The commercial-grade brushless motor delivers up to 60 pounds of no stall force at five different speeds (1750, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2400 percussions per minute). At 16mm, it offers the highest level of amplitude of any gun, giving a noticeably deeper massage over guns with 12mm and 10mm amplitude. It comes standard with six different head attachments, two swappable 150-minute rechargeable batteries and a hard carrying case.

At first, I found the triangle handle grip annoying, but after experimenting it’s all I wanted to use. The different grips and adjustable head angles make it easier to access hard-to-reach body parts while putting less stress on your wrist.

Perhaps the coolest feature isn’t the gun itself, but the Theragun app. Connected via Bluetooth, you can access step-by-step tutorials on how to best to use the gun and even have the app automatically adjust the speed and provide real-time recommendations for a truly individual session.

Best Budget Massage Gun

LifePro DynaSphere

Looking at the stats alone, you’d think this massage gun would cost nearly twice as much. This extremely affordable massage gun offers the type of power seen on guns more than twice its price. The powerful 2000 maH motor has an incredibly high stall force of 66 pounds and is adjustable up to six speeds ranging from 1200 to 2800 rpm. Between that and the 13mm of amplitude, the DynaSphere Spherical gun is plenty strong enough to penetrate past superficial soft tissue for a deep massage.

Like more expensive guns, it comes with a carrying case and five different head attachments. You’ll get an impressive seven hours of power (on the lowest setting) from a USB charging cord. As a bonus feature, you can use the gun as a charger for small electronics like your phone.

If you’re why you would spend twice as much for a similarly performing gun, it lacks Bluetooth connectivity and is a bit noisy. Also, the plastic casing doesn’t feel as solid as more expensive guns. That said, it is backed by a lifetime warranty, so if something were to break LifePro will replace it.

Most Powerful Massage Gun

Hyperice Hypervolt Plus

Hyperice is no stranger to recovery products. It’s one of the leaders in self-massage and recovery items, so it makes sense the brand offers one of the best massage guns on the market. When it comes to quality of build, there’s no question the Hypervolt Plus is one of the best. This solidly built, three-pound gun with an easy-to-grip silicone handle delivers an industry leading 80 pounds of stall force. In terms of raw power, the 90W motor with 13mm of amplitude pounded away and felt more powerful than every gun tested.

The Hypervolt Plus also comes with five different heads and six hours of battery life. One knock: the case is sold separately for $49, and right now it’s out of stock.

Like the Theragun, the Hypervolt Plus connects via Bluetooth to an app where you can find video-guided routines for warming up, relaxation, and recovery. Access expert advice from some of the best minds in athletic training, like Michael Gervais and Dr. Kelly Starrett, on topics such as how to improve your range of motion and coping with stress.

Best Portable Massage Gun

Ekrin Bantam

For such a small gun, the Ekrin Bantam packs a punch — literally! This petite massage gun is perfect for portable massage use and warming up for the gym, track or any traveling exercise. This solidly built mini-gun delivers 35 pounds of stall force at speeds of 2000, 2600, and 3200 RPM.

Neatly packed in a small rectangular carrying case, it comes with four head attachments to customize your treatment depending on body part. The six-hour battery can be charged via USB, eliminating the need for bulky dedicated chargers, which further adds to its superior portability status. The 10mm amplitude may not penetrate as deep as full-sized guns, but with such a high stall force, it’s just great for on-the-go use.

Quietest Massage Gun

Massage guns are quite loud. Even some that are marketed as being quiet can be rather annoying to those around you. Of all the guns I tested, the Hydragun was by far the quietest, registering at less than half the volume (30 to 50 decibels) of similarly priced guns.

Made with solid-feeling aerospace-grade aluminum, the Hydragun packs pretty respectable stats. There are six different speeds, with a max of 3600 rpm. The head offers 12mm of amplitude with 40 pounds of stall force. It comes standard with six different head attachments, a carrying case and outlet plugs for US and Euro specs that charge a 2600 maH battery for roughly 3.6 hours of use.

Crescendo: the highest point reached in a progressive increase of intensity. In some ways, that mellifluous term could describe August, which often features some of the most sweltering days of the year.

But just like that musical peak is inevitably followed by a change of pace, the end of the month signals a transition toward cooler conditions. Fittingly, this month’s most notable fitness releases range from hot-weather gear to products suited for more chilled-out situations.

Something in common? They’re all designed to help your body make beautiful music burning calories, in or out of the blazing sun.
