What we have here is another cool take on a California dial from UNDONE. Those of you who have been following us know we have a soft spot for darker colorways, which makes the Ronin an instant hit. As with most of the watchmaker’s limited-edition collaborations, some of the hour markers have been replaced.

This time, instead of 1, 2, 10, and 11, it has the Japanese phonetic lettering (Hiragana) that reads Ronin. The leather strap shows red stitching that emulates the kusazuri of a samurai’s traditional armor. Design and build quality

What we love about the ROLLOVA aside from its ability to measure more than just straight lines is the top-notch construction. What we have here is not a run-of-the-mill cheap plastic gadget that you can find in a hardware store bargain bin somewhere. Instead, it boasts a robust body crafted out of 7075 aluminum alloy that measures 2 inches in diameter and 0.5 inches thick.

As you can see, this is very pocketable which adds to its charm. To enhance its durability, you have 304 stainless-steel on both of its flanks that definitely gives it a stylish vibe. Moreover, the matte finish looks classy and the metal feels noticeably premium. The rest of the assembly is nylon plastic, while the outer ring is silicone rubber.

The material properties of the latter and the ribbed texture provides excellent grip on almost any surface. This keeps the ROLLOVA from slipping when in use no matter what angle and direction you need it to go. The Designer Edition flaunts an elegant gold/black colorway, while the regular version comes in silver/black. Meanwhile, HOZO Design even throws in a fancy leather case to protect your device.

Technical Specs

To view measurements, the ROLLOVA sports a 128 x 64-resolution, 1.3-inch OLED display (white for the Designer Edition, blue for the standard). It sits behind a perforated stainless-steel array that lines perfectly with each pixel.

Measurements are calculated using the ALPS sensor and advanced algorithms processed by the onboard OVA2.0 STM32 chip. HOZO Design claims it is 60% more accurate, 25% more power-efficient, and 37% more powerful than its predecessor.

On the opposite end is a single button right in the middle of the removable stainless-steel cover. Just twist it to unlock and you can access the two CR1632 button cell batteries. This gives the ROLLOVA at least two years of standby time. Finally, its memory can save up to 99 measurements.

Measuring with the ROLLOVA

Not only is HOZO Design banking on aesthetics to sell its products, but Its likewise promoting a futuristic approach. To start, just lineup up the marker on the edge of the item you want to measure, press the button and drag it across.

The display should show the measurements in centimeters or inches depending on how you have it set up. Just release the button once you reach the end for the final reading. For corners, you can press the button once or twice to offset the radius or diameter of the ROLLOVA.

Key takeaways

It might seem that we are only highlighting all the good stuff about HOZO Design’s latest gadget. Nevertheless, we also need to point out some of the caveats we noticed. For example, unlike a retractable tape measure, the ROLLOVA is limited to how far your hands can reach. Another gripe we have is the need to keep the button pressed while measuring.

As much as we want to complain about the aforementioned areas for improvement, we found the ROLLOVA impressive. Furthermore, we want to praise the concept behind it which is refreshing compared to what the market currently has to offer. It is handy, lightweight, accurate, and most of all, fun.

Lift/Leaks

After checking every nook and cranny of the machine, XT was ready to begin. Given the owner’s love for unpaved pathways, ground clearance was on top of the list. The JKS JSPEC 3.50-inch suspension lift kit and additional FOX shocks should work nicely. What follows is a Flowmaster American Thunder Cat back exhaust system to maximize the new ride height.

The years have not been kind to some of it’s the Wrangler JK’s components. As the mileage grew, so did the damage to most of its gaskets. Replacements were in order which includes the ones from the oil pan, intake manifold, and transmission. Other items that went into this part of the build include new control arms, a rear crankshaft seal, and a Rugged Ridge front driveshaft.

A new look

Now that the underside has been taken care of, work moved on to the upper section of the SUV. To give it slightly more menacing aesthetic as well as robust protection from all angle, XT prepared a comprehensive package. We’re seeing front/rear bumpers and fender flares from Poison Spyder. Meanwhile, the aluminum inner fender liners are provided by DV8.

Next up, is the Smittybilt Gen2 X20 winch with synthetic rope and wireless control. It can support up to 10,000 lbs and is a reliable tool when in a pinch. Then there’s a pair of Addictive Desert Designs Stealth Fighter step bars. All of these are prominently in black with some silver elements. These match well with the new set of Fuel Wheels Trophy matte black with anthracite ring wheels. These are then wrapped with Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ P3 all-terrain rubber.

Rounding out the exterior features are changes by XT for low-light visibility and safety. KC HiLiTES was gracious enough to donate multiple LED lighting systems to enhance the build. This replaces the stock headlights, adds a pair of fog lamps, and a roof-mounted light bar. As for the rear section, Axial ruby-red LED tail lights have been installed. Completing it are LED back-up lights and amber LED marker lamps from Poison Spyder.

Interior upgrades

It’s clear that ExtremeTerrain knows exactly what they’re doing. So far, most of the action we’ve been talking about was on the outside. Hence, it’s time to peek inside the cozy cabin of this bespoke Jeep Wrangler JK. The stock front driver and passenger seating have been swapped out for a pair of Corbeau Trailcat seats, with the rear seats reupholstered to match the black vinyl material and stitching of the former.

Remembering Drew’s love for music, the team is equipping his modified SUV with a JL Audio speaker, subwoofer, and amplifier kit. These are all hooked up to a 7-inch Alpine in-dash head unit with a full suite of entertainment-ready functions. This all-in-one infotainment setup goes beyond with the inclusion of Rugged Ridge LED courtesy lights that can even match the beat of the music.
