Czinger C21 retakes Laguna Seca lap record from Koenigsegg Jesko

There are more hypercars on sale in the U.S. than there are new cars under $20,000. Sure, that’s still just a handful, but it doesn’t take much to make a crowd at more than seven figures; as it was with Greek mythology, so it is with $2M cars, a few Titans go a long way. With that kind of competition, it’s not enough for hypercars to make big horsepower, they need to prove their prowess with it. We’re too early in the game to call what’s happening the beginning of laptime wars, but factions keep firing shots at one another. Swedish outfit Koenigsegg and U.S. outfit Czinger exchanged the latest rounds on the battlegrounds of Laguna Seca. In 2021, Czinger development driver Joel Miller drove a 21C to a new record around the famous 2.2-mile Northern California track with a time of 1:25.44. That broke the previous record of 1:27.62 set by Randy Pobst in a McLaren Senna.

During last month’s Monterey Car Week, Koenigsegg development driver Markus Lundh piloted a Jesko Attack — the big-winged, track-focused Jesko variant — around Laguna Seca in 1:24.86, besting Czinger’s lap by 0.56. This was Koenigsegg’s first visit to the circuit, and Lundh’s as well. There’s no doubt the Lundh can go quicker, given more time to get himself and the Jesko dialed in to the track.

Czinger, based in Southern California, wasted no time trailering a C21 up north to get its stolen property back. Miller, piloting the C21 Blackbird trim that makes a little more horsepower, cut the lap record down to 1:24.75, a mere 0.11 ahead of the Jesko Attack. For now.

A comparison of the weapons: Jesko Attack bodywork hides a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8 that makes 1,577 hp and 1,105 lb-ft on E85 (or 1,262 hp on regular pump gas) to power the rear wheels alone. Claimed weight is 3,064 pounds with fluids. The standard C21 uses a twin-turbocharged 2.88-liter V8 in back turning the rear wheels plus two electric motors turning the fronts, to make a combined 1,233 hp and more than 539 lb-ft. The C21 Blackbird increases the horse count to 1,333. Claimed weight is 2,756 pounds.

As we said, we’re not sure this is a war yet, but we know the skirmishes aren’t over. Czinger broke the Goodwood Hill Climb record in July (if you haven’t seen the C21 in action, sounding like the opposite of the Jesko, you should change that), Koenigsegg spent the same month breaking four records during its 0-400-0 run in a Jesko Absolute. Czinger had set a lap record at Texas’ Circuit of the Americas that Hennessey broke with the Venom F5, Czinger has already said it wants that record again, and some blue ribbons earned in Europe next year as well. And we know Koenigsegg and Hennessey are plotting to break the 300-mph record, they’re just waiting on the tires to do it. Czinger 21C gets a V Max variant with new bodywork for top speeds

Even salesmen with delicious cuts of meat to offer know that you sell the sizzle, not the steak. That’s what Czinger went to Monterey Car Week to do with a third version of its tandem two-seater 21C and its planned Hyper GT. We’ll start with the 21C, which, remember, launched with two body styles. There was a road version and a track version whose aero accoutrements provided three times the downforce of the road car. The 21C V Max takes the road car in the opposite direction of the track car, streamlining and elongating the bodywork to trade drag for velocity.

The package should make more speed from the 2.88-liter twin-turbo V8 that sits behind the cabin in all 21Cs, aided by the two electric motors on the front axle. Founder Kevin Czinger said in Monterey the 1,233-horsepower powerplant enables the same sub-two-second 0-60 time as the other variants. Having reworked everything from the front splitter to the rear diffuser, the Vmax should be even faster than the claimed 27-second sprint from zero to 250 miles per hour and back to zero for the regular 21C. Claimed quarter-mile time is 8.1 seconds, claimed top speed is 253 miles per hour.

The V Max will be part of the 80-unit build of the 21C, giving buyers three flavors to choose from at a cost of $1.7 million per. First deliveries are planned for the end of next year.

At some point after the 21C begins deliveries, Czinger plans to have its second vehicle headed to production, known for now as the Hyper GT. It’s powered by the same hybrid setup as the 21C but with the ICE put up front and — we assume — the e-motors in back. Czinger says this will be “the most powerful grand tourer ever produced” and “by far, the top performing GT ever built and ever put out on the street” that also happens to have room for four adults and their luggage; those occupants will enter via gullwing doors, because you can’t see the wow factor of 1,233 hp at the valet stand.

Being so far out from production, we’re not sure what the interior will hold. But the company plans to produce 1,000 of the Hyper GT at its Los Angeles headquarters, each costing between $750,000 and $1 million, and then follow it up with a battery-electric model sometime before 2030. Czinger told Autocar, “The original conception of Czinger was to produce that ultimate road-track car [the 21C] that could set all of the records.” After the reception to the 21C and breaking the Laguna Seca lap record, he said, “Then the idea was ‘This could be a really, really cool brand,’ with the father-son combination [referring to his son and co-founder Lukas], that creates a whole series of the most off-the-hook vehicles in each of the categories.” 

Czinger 21C: American Hypercar with a 1350hp V8 and 11,000 rpm Redline

California based Czinger have revealed full specifications of their Czinger 21C hypercar. The car is now production ready after receiving key updates within the last few months. They were prepared to showcase two cars at the Geneva Motor Show 2021 but that was postponed alongside the show itself.

The 21C enters the scene at a time when most car makers are moving away from combustion engines, they have combined a V8 engine and two electric motors meaning it should be able to pass most emission regulations especially in California and Europe in general.

Despite the added weight that comes with a hybrid system, Czinger managed to get a 1:1 power-weight-ratio. The combined output is 1,250hp and the weight is rated at 1.240kg. An optional power upgrade of 100hp is also available, bringing the total power output to 1,350hp. In comparison, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale has a similar V8 hybrid setup but weighs in at 1600kg and produces 986hp.

Even more interesting is the nature of the engine used on the Czinger 21C, a 2.88L twin-turbo V8 developed in-house. This is the most power dense production engine in the world right now. While the engine drives the rear wheels, two electric motors are responsible for driving the front wheels. In addition, the powertrain benefits from a 800v system.

The lithium batteries are charged through regenerative braking and via a Motor Generator Unit (MGU) which is connected to the engine.

The Czinger 21C will be built in Los Angeles and is limited to just 80 cars worldwide each priced at $2,050,000.
