2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

For the longest time, Chevrolet loyalists have been clamoring for the release of a mid-engine model. So far, the company is sticking with its traditional formula of mounting the engine upfront. Persistence appears to be the key as fans of the bowtie emblem are about to finally get what they want. A couple of months ago we got a thrilling teaser in the form of an unnamed Corvette that purportedly came with a mid-mounted powerplant. Now, it seems that wishes do come true as the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray makes its official debut.

Gearheads who have been following the rumor mill for a while now are claiming that Chevy was teasing this for close to 50 years. Even though their patience was already wearing thin, the faithful are finally ready to drive home their dream car. This classy coupe will be relying on a 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine.

Pairing it with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, owners are looking at 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Owners can marvel at the beautiful setup that sits just behind the driver underneath the rear hatch window. Moreover, you go for the Engine Appearance Package optional add-on for LED illumination alongside carbon fiber components.

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray sports stunning aerodynamics by cleverly hiding the handles for the door, hood, and hatch. Meanwhile, the adaptive Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 suspension delivers superior handling for a smooth and enjoyable ride. Likewise, the interior is equally remarkable with top-notch materials and cutting-edge presentation. The best part of it all is the pricing that starts at $60,000 and goes up from there for various trims.

Mini Cooper SE

A while back, Mini unveiled an all-electric car, pleasing fans all over but also devastating them. Why? Well, because it wasn’t real. Fast forward to now and people will actually soon be able to buy a Mini electric ride. And not only that, it’s got a truly competitive range and purely electric drivetrain. Meet the Mini Cooper SE.

It’s the brand’s first-ever truly electric car, featuring a range of between 235 and 270 kilometers, or 146 to 148 miles. It supports fast-charging of up to 50kW, as well. Acceleration is zero to 60 in just over seven seconds. Certainly not sportscar fast, sure, but pretty cool for an electric car, still. The engine under the hood is capable of delivering an equivalent of 181 horsepower.

Unfortunately, the performance of the Mini Cooper SE doesn’t hold a candle to more popular electric cars, like the Tesla Model S. However, the classic Mini Cooper design is in full swing here, which might be the biggest draw. Pricing is around $36,400 when converted from the €32,500 starting cost. That means Mini isn’t gunning for the elite crowd here. This is a fairly inexpensive Mini for those who want the luxurious aesthetic and environmental awareness.

It’s also the first car in the BMW Group to offer the driver a choice between regenerative braking or light. You can tweak how aggressively the car zooms when the foot is off the gas. BMW says it’s going to start shipping these bad boys as soon as possible. Likely delivery date is March of next year.

2005 Ford GT Merkury 4

Ford is currently playing coy about a proper GT successor. No surprise, then, that other tuners have taken it upon themselves to play around with the models that are available at hand. Which brings us to this wallop — a Ford GT Merkury 4. Developed in collaboration with Camilo Pardo, no less.

Infamous Ford GT tuner GT Guy worked with original GT designer Prado on this one, you read that right. The ride features a Mirrachrome abstract custom paint job. Topped off with a florescent orange center stripe and a satin black pinstripe. The car came with HRE center-bolt rims with 275/30ZR19 front Michelin tires and 345/30ZR20 ones on the rear.

As if the base’s 5.4-liter supercharged modular V8 engine wasn’t impressive enough, the folks threw in a second-generation Whipple supercharger and a GTG cold air intake kit. As a result, the engine’s output blazes toi a whopping 725 horsepower. At 19 pounds of boost on 91 octane fuel, that is.

In all, the Ford GT Merkury 4 is a breathtaking vintage homage. Especially since chief Pardo himself supervised the touches and finishes. Other upgrades include a GTG “Vintage” bumper delete kit, which relocates the exhaust between the tail lamp like an original Mark II. And a ceramic-coated Ford racing exhaust, a nice detail on top of an already-packed job. The HRE center lock rims, custom “Ford GT” billet fuel door, billet clamshell center, and side clamshell vents are cherries. You’ll find twin sill badges to commemorate the build.

Having won the “Best In Show” award at the 10th Annual Ford GT National Rally in Detroit, the Ford GT Merkury 4 is no doubt one of the most significant splurges you can treat yourself to this year.

Audi Sport unveils 2019 R8 LMS GT3 in Paris

Audi Sport took to the Paris Motor Show Tuesday to unveil an updated R8 LMS GT3, its fourth new model in as many years, with elements borrowed from the production version of the R8 and what Audi says is a more customer-focused evolution.

Engineers opted to make moderate changes and focused on four areas: aerodynamics, brake cooling, the clutch and transmission. There’s a new splitter at the front to give it a modified face but also greater downforce, and varying ride heights due to suspension setups, driving conditions and different driving situations now have smaller effects on the airflow, leading to higher aerodynamic stability. There’s also improved airflow to the rear brake system and more efficient release of heat from the ventilated disc brakes to prevent the wheels from overheating in race situations, plus better airflow through the front bumper to help cool the front brakes.

Audi Sport also says the car’s three-plate racing clutch, gear teeth and bearings have all been made more durable, while engineers found a way to reduce wear and tear on the locking differential, which simplifies handling. There’s also a new carbon fiber-reinforced plastic crash element at the rear that fulfills the crash test requirements for Le Mans prototypes.

Though it rides on the same chassis as before, it’s now about 66 pounds lighter at 2,700 pounds empty weight, thanks to the use of aluminum in the space frame, structural carbon fiber in the center tunnel and back wall and steel roll cage, yet the supporting frame also boast 39 percent additional torsional stiffness. And Audi says the manufacturing process of the production and race versions of the car are more interlinked than ever at its plant in Heilbronn, with the racing chassis integrated in the production process up to and including the point of roof assembly and cathodic dip painting, a type of priming. That’s despite the racing variant’s use of cast-aluminum nodes and steel roll cage.

It also borrows the same 5.2-liter V10 that makes up to 585 horsepower in racing guise. It is also produced on the same assembly line as the R8 Coupe production version and is nearly identical, with a service interval of 6,213 miles and 12,427 miles for the first rebuild. The power is sent through a sequential six-speed performance transmission with paddle shifters.

U.S. pricing wasn’t announced, but Audi Sport said it will deliver the first customer race cars in November at 398,000 euros, which translates to about $460,000, not including Europe’s value-added tax. An evolution kit for retrofitting older models goes for 28,000 euros.

The R8 LMS GT3 will hit the international race circuit following FIA homologation in January.

Last of 500 allocated McLaren Sennas sells at auction

If you held any hope of obtaining the last available McLaren Senna, abandon it now: The last of the 500 build allocations has sold at a private auction for McLaren customers. It raised £2 million ($2.67 million) for the Ayrton Senna Institute, the nonprofit non-government organization named for the late three-time Formula One world champion.

The company announced the sale three days after the supercar’s official unveiling and four days after it was leaked during an early reveal party. Excluding taxes, the winning bid from an anonymous buyer was more than three times the U.K. list price for the car.

Originally dubbed the P15, McLaren says the Senna is the “most extreme” road car it has ever created, with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 generating 789 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. It’s also the lightest, at 2,641 pounds. It boasts a RCC II RaceActive Chassis Control hydraulic suspension and unique features like a Jetsons-esque glass greenhouse and glass panels in the doors.

Ayrton Senna won three F1 world championships driving for McLaren. The auction for McLaren customers was attended by his sister, Viviane Senna da Silva Lalli, and Bruno Senna, her son, also a race driver and McLaren ambassador.

The Ayrton Senna Institute provides education to underprivileged children in Brazil.
