20 of the Best Over-the-Top Whiskeys to Gift This Year

There are thoughtful whiskeys to gift, then there are f**k you whiskeys to gift. The 20 on this list are the latter. From a 42-year-old Canadian whisky that you might be able to find to experimental Maker’s Mark, these are the whiskeys you get when you’re trying to flex.

1. Heaven’s Door Bootleg Series

Price: $500 SRP
From: heavensdoor.com

Bob Dylan’s whiskey label launched a series named after some of his music, and its first entry is a 26-year-old American whiskey finished in Japanese Mizunara casks, the likes of which are used by famed Japanese whisky brands like Yamazaki and Hibiki. The bottle is decorated with Dylan’s Train Tracks painting.

2. Ardbeg Supernova

Price: $180 SRP
From: ardbeg.com

A peat bomb among peat bombs. Ardbeg’s Supernova has a good backstory — it was launched in celebration of the brand sending whiskey to outer space and shows off what its master distillers are capable of — but this year’s release is a bit simpler: it takes Ardbeg’s classically Islay peat levels to new heights.

3. Maker’s Mark RC6

Price: $60
From: makersmark.com

Maker’s Mark is finally getting into the limited release whiskey game. The RC6 expression is the first in its annual limited run bottlings, and it was built from the ground up to show off an oft-forgot part of whiskey making: yeast. Maker’s longtime yeast is remarkably fruity, and RC6 is too. It’s made with Maker’s standard wheated bourbon mashbill but finished for its final nine weeks with proprietary “RC6” staves shoved in the barrel to inflect a fruitier flavor. The result is a bourbon that tastes a bit like apple pie.

4. El Tesoro Extra Añejo

Price: $100
From: eltesorotequila.com

No, it’s not whiskey, but it’s as close as an agave spirit gets to it. Crafted by Carlos Camarena, one of Mexico’s most legendary spirits makers, El Tesoro’s Extra Añejo is aged four to five years in American ex-bourbon barrels. This is not margarita tequila — this is sipping tequila.

5. Blanton’s Straight From the Barrel

Price: ~$250
From: blantonsbourbon.com

This is a multi-layered flex gift. Blanton’s is already a great bourbon to gift someone — the weird shape, case and bottle stopper guarantee that much — but its best offerings are only available overseas. Straight From the Barrel is your standard, spicy Blanton’s bottled at barrel proof — 130 proof in this case — and it is hot. This is not a purchase for the whiskey newcomer, this is a purchase for your friend with an overflowing cabinet.

Gear Patrol Magazine Subscription

From: store.gearpatrol.com

Gear Patrol Magazine is a deep dive into product culture. Inside each issue, you’ll find seasonal buying guides, rich maker profiles and long-form dispatches from the front lines of product design. Get four print magazines — delivered quarterly — with an annual subscription.

6. Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Cornerstone Rye

Price: $175 SRP
From: wildturkeybourbon.com

Master’s Keep is Wild Turkey’s annual, highest-end whiskey release. Cornerstone Rye is the first rye in the series and the most mature rye whiskey Wild Turkey has ever released (a mix of barrels aged 9 to 11 years). This should be drank with a couple drops of water on a cold night. Bonus points for the highly wrappable rectangular box.

7. Whistlepig The Boss Hog “Samurai Scientist”

Price: $500 SRP
From: whistlepigwhiskey.com

Canadian whisky sourcing experts WhistlePig went in another direction with this year’s Boss Hog release. “Samurai Scientist” is an American whiskey made through koji fermentation and finished using umeshu. The goal was to create a whiskey with true umami. You’ll have to pay up to find out if they succeeded.

8. Tyrconnell 16-year-old Oloroso & Moscatel Cask-Finished

Price: $100 SRP
From: distiller.com

Rest assured that whoever you buy this for has never had a whiskey like this. Tyrconnell’s one-off release is aged in American ex-bourbon barrels and finished twice — once in sherry casks and again in moscatel barrels. This is an Irish whiskey like no other.

9. Little Book Chapter 03 “The Road Home”

Price: $125 SRP
From: littlebookwhiskey.com

Who to get this for: your buddy who likes Jim Beam. A lot. The third release under Freddie Noe’s whiskey blending line is comprised of 9-year-old Knob Creek, 9-year-old Basil Hayden’s, 11-year-old Booker’s and 12-year-old Baker’s — all barrel proof.

10. George T. Stagg

Price: $99 SRP
From: buffalotracedistillery.com

The Allfather of high proof bourbon. Part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, George T. Stagg is a flavor nuke of a whiskey. If you can get your hands on a bottle below $500, I compell you to buy it. Few whiskeys demand as much attention from the award-givers and the whiskey cognoscenti.

11. High West A Midwinter Night’s Dram

Price: $90 SRP
From: highwest.com

High West’s weird and wonderful annual release is a blend of high rye whiskeys finished in French oak and port barrels. The French oak gives the whiskey a firm tannic backbone while the port barrels add rich sweetness on top of the rye’s natural spice. It is among the most unique American whiskeys one can buy, and hardly anybody talks about it.

12. Michter’s 20-Year

Price: $700 SRP
From: michters.com

Two-decade-old barrels are selected by Michter’s master distiller Dan McKee and master of maturation Andrea Wilson and are available in “extremely limited quantities.” Since the Michter’s brand resurgence, many of its expressions with age statements have become unobtanium, but the 20-year has suffered the most. If you find it, great; if you don’t, try and find either the 10-year Single Barrel Bourbon or 10-Year Single Barrel Rye.

13. Kentucky Owl Straight Rye #3

Price: $200 SRP
From: kentuckyowlbourbon.com

Love it or hate it, Kentucky Owl is a brand built on hype. Its third rye release (the first of which netted a sky-high 95 out of 100 score on Whisky Advocate) is an unshy 114 proof mouth punch of a whiskey. It’s nearly an investment piece.

14. Red Spot

Price: $130 SRP
From: spotwhiskey.com

Off shelves since the 1960s, Red Spot Irish whiskey reemerged last fall with a bang. The eldest of the Spot whiskeys (Green and Yellow are 7- and 12-years-old), the 15-year-old Red Spot isn’t cheap, but it is easier to find than most whiskeys on this list. If your giftee likes their whiskeys nice, old and easy to drink, your search is over.

15. Angel’s Envy Cask Strength

Price: $200 SRP
From: angelsenvy.com

The folks behind Angel’s Envy Cask Strength have nearly perfected barrel finishing their whiskey. Cask Strength, finished in port barrels, is comprised of 6-, 8-, 9-, 10-, 13-, 14- and 15-year-old bourbons, and, because Chief Innovation Officer Wes Henderson doesn’t care for convention, its nothing like previous years.

16. Canadian Club “The Dock Man”

Price: $300 SRP
From: canadianclub.com

The first of Canadian Club’s Chronicles series won 2018’s Jim Murray Canadian Whisky of the Year. The Dock Man, the brand’s second go, is a 42-year-old followup is the probably the most mature whisky you will every drink. And because Canadian whisky isn’t as tortured by speculators and BST-ers, you might have a chance of finding it.

17. Chichibu Ichiro’s Malt “The Peated”

Price: $1,000
From: dekanta.com

This wouldn’t be so expensive if you lived in Japan. Chichibu is an infant distillery compared to Suntory and Nikka, the two brands that have dominated Japanese whisky since the middle of the 20th century. Founded in 2004, the distillery employs less than ten people and makes very little whisky but is situated in a perfect spot for whisky production. The Peated is an annual limited edition release.

18. Hakushu 12

Price: ~$150
From: whisky.suntory.com

Hakushu 12 wasn’t always considered an “over-the-top” buy. You could’ve bought bought bottles for $50 before Japanese whisky started crushing international award shows. But today, thanks to an eruption of demand and limited supply, Hakushu 12 shipments have been discontinued by Suntory, the brand’s parent company. Thankfully, there’s still bottles scattered around liquor stores across the US; the only problem is store owners know it was discontinued. Expect to pay between $120 and $200.

19. Weller Full Proof

Price: $50 SRP
From: buffalotracedistillery.com

One of the most anticipated whiskey releases of the year. Weller Full Proof is the closest thing to getting a bottle of another famous bottle of Weller called William Larue Weller (WL Weller). Part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, WL Weller is a barrel proof, extra-aged variant on the standard wheated bourbon. Wheathed bourbon, we might add, that shared DNA with none other than Pappy Van Winkle.

20. Four Roses 2019 Small Batch

Price: $140
From: fourrosesbourbon.com

If you know whiskey, you know Four Roses’ annual limited edition bottle is reliably one of the best drops of the year. This year’s includes whiskey up to 21-years-old, which is the most mature whiskey Four Roses has ever bottled. If you can’t find it (or don’t want to pay for it), get Small Batch Select.

Staff Picks: What Gear Patrol Editors Are Asking for This Year

Every year, we writers, editors and other content creators here at Gear Patrol lay our hands on thousands of new products of all sizes, prices, shapes and colors. We test, experience and play with many of the hottest, most desired consumer items in the world, to see how they fit into our lives in order to tell you how well they might fit into yours. If it’s part of any of the categories you see at the top of this website, odds are good we’ve spent time with it.

Not surprisingly, this makes us rather hard to shop for.

So in order to both streamline the gift-giving process for our friends and loved ones and provide our loyal readers with a window into our minds this holiday season, we’ve pulled together a list of the items that we’re all hoping to find wrapped up and handed to us this year. If you’re shopping for a loyal Gear Patrol reader, odds are good you’ll find something they’ll like here, too.

1. East Fork Breakfast Bowl

Price: $22
From: eastfork.com

“I got a cat over the summer and am upgrading his starter-kit essentials (i.e. feeding bowls) to be more #lifestyle. I’ve been eyeing these small bowls from East Fork since we wrote about the company in Gear Patrol Magazine: Issue 11. At $22, they’re a bit too expensive to rationalize on my own dime — but they’d make for one helluva gift.” — Jack Seemer

2. MasterCard Gift Cards

Price: $29+
From: amazon.com

“Most of the things that I want — a new laptop, a camera lens — are too expensive to ask my family to get for me. But I have no shortage of experiences on my list: a meal at a new restaurant in my neighborhood, a day or two of skiing on my local mountain, a mid-week trip to my favorite bakery that’s not in my budget. With these things in mind, a boring old gift card becomes the perfect present.” — Tanner Bowden

3. Homecho Wine Rack

Price: $33
From: amazon.com

“My very modest wine collection (if you can call it that) is currently stored upright on a shelf in my living room. This affordable wine rack seems like a more elegant solution; it stores the wine at an angle, the way you’re evidently supposed to, in order to keep the corks moist.” — Oren Hartov

4. Sagely Naturals Relief & Recovery Cream

Price: $36
From: sagely.com

“I’ve tried a few different CBD relief and recovery creams, but none of them have the lasting relief power of this one from Sagely Naturals. It utilizes broad-spectrum CBD along with a cooling peppermint that helps aches and pains melt away. They’ve also formulated it to be non-greasy, so that’s never an issue either.” — Ryan Brower

5. Adidas Hoops 2.0

Price: $44
From: amazon.com

“I’m a huge fan of Adidas’s Stan Smith line — so much so that I’ve walked through the soles of the ones I received two years ago for the holidays. I recently spotted these on my cousin and loved how much they looked like Stan Smiths but weren’t the exact same.” — Meg Lappe

Gear Patrol Magazine is a deep dive into product culture. Inside each issue, you’ll find seasonal buying guides, rich maker profiles and long-form dispatches from the front lines of product design. Get four print magazines — delivered quarterly — with an annual subscription.

6. Crossrope Get Lean

Price: $88
From: amazon.com

“After the $4 jump rope I was using snapped and hit a fellow gym-goer (who was startled but uninjured and cool about it), I feel it might be time to invest more in the hobby. Crossrope was recommended to me by someone who in the know after I told them that story.” — Zen Love

Meanwhile, these Dainese beauties feature not only waterproof-breathable Gore-Tex but also Primaloft insulation, enabling me to motor around without freezing my damn fingers off. Plus, like most things Dainese, they look pretty sweet too.” — Steve Mazzucchi

10. Leopold FC660C Keyboard

Price: $230
From: amazon.com

“I own a lot of keyboards. By any reasonable measure, too many. But the Leopold FC660C is one I do not yet own and is currently the chief among my various, rotating obsessions. With rare, expensive and unique “Topre” switches mounted to its internal metal frame, it has a distinctively satisfying snap to each keypress that I’ve come to truly long for after foolishly buying a different keyboard instead.” — Eric Limer

11. Kikuichi Nickel Damascus Santoku

Price: $240
From: amazon.com

“I don’t work in a kitchen that demands practicality, so I don’t mind a knife designed outside of the pragmatic-but-pretty-boring box that is stainless steel. I also like things that tell their own story (or at least have a story I can tell). This multilayered carbon steel knife was made by a bladesmithing house in Japan’s Nara Prefecture that, around 750 years ago, made swords for the Emperor. My partner won’t get me a sword, so a kitchen knife will have to do.” — Will Price

12. Apple AirPods Pro

Price: $249
From: amazon.com

“I got the original AirPods a year and a half ago, but I haven’t used them as much as I thought I would. The sound quality isn’t much better than the EarPods I have floating around, and while I’ve long grown used to wired headphones in my pocket, the dental floss-sized case of the AirPods pushed my EDC load just past the point of comfort. They juuuuust weren’t worth the effort. Add in intelligent noise cancellation and a better-fitting form factor, though, and the whole calculus changes.” — Will Sabel Courtney

13. R.M. Williams Yard Boot 365

Price: $345
From: rmwilliams.com

“I already have a pair of great lace-up boots, but sometimes they take a while to actually lace up. The R.M. Williams Yard Boot 365 are a reinterpretation of the Australian brand’s Gardener boot, designed by Marc Newson to be appropriate for formal occasions as much as they would be appropriate for actual yard work.” — Tyler Chin

Price: $395 (set of 3)
From: etsy.com

“For me, 2019 was a year of moving into and furnishing my first real apartment, sans roommates. It’s been four months of nonstop researching and endless waiting on delivery guys. So now that it’s all basically over, it’d be nice to have a couple people over and just hang out. Guess I’ll need some extra chairs.” — Henry Phillips

15. Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

I reviewed this guitar when it first came out and I can’t stop thinking about it. Its tone is precise and bell-like, its neck is super playable — and now, it comes in this rad ‘Moc Sand’ color.” — John Zientek

18. Omega Seamaster Professional Automatic

Price: $2,499
From: amazon.com

“Assuming it’s far too gratuitous to ask for a Lexus LC 500, a mid-Nineties-vintage Seamaster Professional Automatic is my somewhat-less-gratuitous wish-list gift. Ever since this particular Seamaster Professional reference (2531.80) caught my eye 20-something years ago, I’ve dreamed of having one on my wrist. I love its classic look: deep blue dial and face, tasteful mix of textures and overall simplicity. In fact, I own a much more affordable diver in a very similar spec; I consider it a very fine placeholder until my Omega comes along. Though I’m just as likely to go diving as I am to get one in my stocking this year, one way or another there’s a Seamaster Professional in my future.” — Nick Caruso

The 20 Best Bottles of Whiskey to Gift This Year

Whiskey is one of the best and worst things to gift someone during the holiday season. When chosen well, it’s a thoughtful offering that fits their taste. When chosen haphazardly, it comes off as an eleventh-hour pickup. From peaty Scotch to classic bourbon to Australian whiskey made in wine barrels, here are 20 bottles to buy, along with 20 reasons to buy them.

1. Four Roses Small Batch Select

Price: ~$55
From: fourrosesbourbon.com

Undoubtedly one of the biggest bourbon releases of the year, Small Batch Select is Four Roses’ first addition to its main lineup in more than a decade. On top of that, its recipe is borrowed from another world-beating bottle of hyper-limited Four Roses whiskey.

2. Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Bourbon

Price: ~$45
From: knobcreek.com

Have a friend who likes Jim Beam whiskey but usually reaches for the cheaper stuff? Knob Creek’s barrel strength offering is 120 proof and aged for nine years — stats that overshadow the brand’s bottom shelf go-tos. The best part? It’s available just about everywhere.

3. New Riff Straight Rye

Price: ~$45
From: newriffdistilling.com

“Nonetheless, if New Riff is not on your radar, you need to follow them. They’re one of the most exciting new distilleries in the world.” Those were the words of bourbon writer and personality Fred Minnick after the distillery won serious silverware at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition. This is what you get for a buddy who’s serious about whiskey (the kind that browses /r/bourbon too much).

4. Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bourbon

Price: ~$50
From: heavenhilldistillery.com

Heaven Hill Distillery’s single barrel bourbon used to be everywhere for around $35 or $40. Then it won one of the biggest awards in whiskey, vanished and came back pricier and more difficult to track down. In a decade, Henry McKenna’s 10-year-old juice will be a time capsule to the craziest times in whiskeydom.

5. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Bourbon

Price: ~$65
From: elijahcraig.com

For the whiskey drinker who doesn’t buy hype. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof isn’t particularly hard to find and it doesn’t make many “best of” lists anymore, but it’s one of the most decorated bourbons in the world. The fact you can get a bottle of 12-year-old whiskey bottled at barrel proof (regularly in the mid-130s) for less than $100 is a miracle in today’s whiskey market. Take advantage while it lasts.

Gear Patrol Magazine Subscription

Price: $39
From: store.gearpatrol.com

Gear Patrol Magazine is a deep dive into product culture. Inside each issue, you’ll find seasonal buying guides, rich maker profiles and long-form dispatches from the front lines of product design. Get four print magazines — delivered quarterly — with an annual subscription.

6. Old Forester Rye Whisky

Price: ~$23
From: oldforester.com

Old Forester’s new rye is one of the year’s best new whiskeys. Full stop. It’s as cheap as anything you’d want to drink, bottled at 100 proof and, somehow, a solid sipper. Buy this for a friend who really likes making Manhattans. Shoot, buy three.

7. Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye

Price: ~$50
From: crownroyal.com

The first Canadian whisky to ever win Jim Murray’s divisive “Whiskey of the Year,” this is a bottle for Crown Royal drinkers who won’t drink anything else. Getting this instead of regular Crown means you’re doing more than just saving them a trip to the liquor store, and you’ve got a nice story to tell.

8. Lagavulin 16 Years Old

Price: ~$75
From: malts.com

Everyone has a friend who watched Parks & Rec and let Ron Swanson pick their go-to bottle for them. That’s fine; let them have that. It remains one of the world’s most consistently great Scotch whiskies. Just get a bottle before tariffs trigger price hikes.

9. Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength

Price: ~$80
From: laphroaig.com

Any Scotch lover knows Laphroaig 10. This is that with a little extra firepower. Where standard Laphroaig 10 is just 80 proof, its cask strength version hovers between 115 and 117 proof. Open a windown before you pour.

10. Nikka Whisky From the Barrel

Price: ~$60
From: nikka.com

Nikka’s From the Barrel offering is what to get the person who won’t stop talking about Japanese whisky. It isn’t as famous in the West as your Yamazakis or your Hakushus, but it’s one of the most loved whiskies in Japan, and, beginning last year, you can finally get it in the U.S.

11. Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Price: ~$50
From: oldelk.com

Know a Basil Hayden’s drinker that loves how “smooth” it is? Get them Old Elk. It’s made by a former MGP master distiller named Greg Metze, it shares Basil Hayden’s low-proof, low-heat profile and, given its newness, it’s unlikely most drinkers have tried it.

12. 1792 Full Proof Bourbon

Price: ~$45
From: 1792bourbon.com

If you’re reading this, it’s too late. Barton Distillery’s 1792 Full Proof is the honorary victim of Jim Murray’s enormous power. What was previously a solid, high-proof, sub-$50 bottle or bourbon will evaporate from shelves. That said, if you can find it you’ll have a memorable gift on your hands.

13. E.H. Taylor, Jr. Collection Small Batch

Price: ~$50
From: buffalotracedistillery.com

Get a bottle of E.H. Taylor for the guy who only drinks Buffalo Trace. It’s made with the same mashbill (the distillery’s famous Mashbill #1), proofed just 10 points higher and comes in a nice bottle case to boot.

14. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye

Price: ~$50
From: wildturkeybourbon.com

To those accustomed to Wild Turkey’s flavor punch, the company’s juiced-up rye will be a welcome gift. It’s a 110 proof, non-chill-filtered rye aged in “alligator” char barrels. Find it everywhere for around $50.

15. Willet Family Estate Bottled Rye Whiskey

Price: ~$65
From: kentuckybourbonwhiskey.com

An old whiskey name revived by a phenom of a distiller. Drew Kulsveen’s rye is young and not especially affordable, but few new ryes exhibit a balance of body, spice and finish like this.

16. Legent Bourbon

Price: ~$35
From: legentbourbon.com

Japanese blending techniques meet American flavors. Made by Jim Beam, Legent is one of the first in a wave of American blended bourbons, a category that was once looked down upon. The whiskey is Jim Beam classic bourbon blended with bourbon finished in sherry and red wine casks. It’s an affordable, unique and new bottle for the adventurous type.

17. Starward Nova Australian Single Malt

Price: ~$50
From: starward.com

This is about as unique a whiskey as you’ll find. It’s two years old, but instead of using charred oak barrels like most whiskeys, it’s aged entirely in former red wine barrels and cut to an exceedingly drinkable 82 proof. Get this for the person who doesn’t like harsh drinks but wants to get out of their comfort zone.

18. Balcones Distilling True Blue 100

Price: ~$50
From: balconesdistilling.com

Buy this for the folks who say the only good American whiskey comes from Kentucky. Distilled and aged in Texas, Balcones is one of the most successful “craft” distillers in America. Its True Blue 100 whiskey gets its name from its use of blue corn in the mash instead of the traditional yellow.

19. Belle Meade Cask Strength Bourbon

Price: ~$80
From: bellemadebourbon.com

Whisky Advocate’s 10th-best whiskey of 2018, Belle Meade’s high-proof whiskey is sourced from MGP and it crushes. Only get this for someone who’s willing to take a flavor punch in the jaw.

20. Westward American Single Malt Whiskey

Price: $75
From: westwardwhiskey.com

America’s own single malt whiskey. That’s what Westward (any many others) are setting out to define. Westward’s take is made of 100 percent two-row barley grown in the Pacific Northwest (where the distillery is) and ale yeast. It’s non-chill-filtered and a easy-drinking 90 proof. This one is worth sipping neat.

Add all that time up, and it winds up being a significant chunk of the week — probably longer than the average American spend exercising.

Since the commute is an inevitable part of our lives, why not use this holiday season to brighten it up for your friends and family? Here are some helpful gifts that can make someone’s monotonous trip to and from the office a little more comfortable, stylish, or (dare we say it) even fun.

These Are the Best Affordable Mechanical Watches to Gift This Holiday Season

It’s the holiday season and the watch lover in your life needs a gift — or maybe you want to treat yourself. And though mechanical watches can get expensive, there’s also a number of relatively affordable options that’ll delight even the horological snob. The following mechanical watches range in price from under $100 up to entry-level luxury at around $1,500 — with a lot of great options in between.

1. Seiko 5 Field Watch
