All the Races You Should Sign Up For This Year And The Gear You Need to Compete

The more running groups I join, the more I realize how excited runners get about upcoming races. Not only are races a great way to test your fitness and speed, but each event offers you the chance to beat your best time — and quite possibly compete with your co-worker or rival. There are big races (like the Boston and New York City marathons) and small races (like the Beach to Beacon 10K), each of which have their own qualifying times, race days and sell out dates. For some, the thrill of a race sign-up is logging on at 6:59 AM to make sure you’re first in the queue for the 7 AM launch. For others, you have weeks to debate throwing your name in the hat for big and quick-to-sell-out races like the New York City Half and the Chicago Marathon — both of which have lottery entries.

Whether you’re someone who likes to race to make training more enjoyable, or you use it as a way to travel, there are a plethora of events that we’ve added to our calendars this year to start checking them off our bucket lists.

To help you narrow your choices, we polled Gear Patrol staffers and colleagues for their favorites. And, we didn’t just limit it to running races. Whether you run, bike, swim or all three, we’ve curated a list of events here for you — and, bonus, the gear you need to get started.

Races for 2019

We listed these races in order of calendar succession.

Louisville Criterium, Louisville, CO

Date: March 23, 2019
Sign Up Date: By March 20, 2019
“The event attracts the top local and international cyclists as a kick-off to race season. If you aren’t familiar with road cycling criteriums, they are heart-pounding, tight-cornered, extremely fast road cycling races consisting of several laps around a closed circuit, the length of each lap or circuit ranging from about 800m to 10,000m. They are super technical: the ability to corner smoothly while holding a straight line fast and sharp, and riding safely with a big group of cyclists is not easy, but I am stoked for the challenge again this year!” — Massimo Alpian, Account Director, Outside PR

OSR30, New York, NY

Date: March 30, 2019
Sign Up Date: Follow @OrchardStreetRunners on Instagram
“If you run the perimeter of Manhattan, you’ll hit about 30 miles, which is exactly why Orchard Street Runners puts on a 30-mile race every single year. OSR, for the uninitiated, is one of the fastest running crews in New York City. The founder, Joe DiNoto, first created the race as a competition between friends, and then it got heated. Now, DiNoto puts on the race every year.” — David Kilgore, On Runner Athlete

Boston Athletic Association 5K, Boston, MA

Date: April 13, 2019
Sign Up Date: Closed
“I’ve never run this before, but Boston will always have a warm spot in my heart. It’s a manageable commute from NYC for a race. And the fact that this is the unofficial kick-off for Marathon weekend in Boston makes it hype-worthy. Come for the road 5k course that I’ve heard involves some gnarly, almost-dislocate-your-hip turns, stay for the fact that you can cheer on thousands of your closest friends as they battle through Boston’s streets during one of America’s most historical races.” — Jeanne Mack, Co-Host of Runners of NYC podcast and Olympic Trials Qualifier

Grandma’s Marathon, Duluth, MN

Date: June 22, 2019
Sign Up Date: Now Through June 1
“A lot of Hare A.C. runners will be aiming for fast times (2020 Olympic Trials’s standards, BQs or PRs) at this notoriously fast race in Minnesota.” — Louis Serafini, Community Manager for Tracksmith

Brooklyn Mile, Brooklyn, NY

Date: June 16, 2019
Sign Up Date: June 4, 2019
“Everyone should train and race a mile, and road miles like Brooklyn or the 5th Ave Mile add a layer of excitement you don’t get on the track.” — Lee Glandorf, PR manager for Tracksmith

Xterra Steep Rock 10K Trail Race, Steep Rock, CT

Date: August 2019
Sign Up Date: TBD
“The only race for certain is the Xterra Steep Rock 10K Trail Race in August up in CT. I’ve run it the last two years, and I love the course. Not super competitive, but a lot of fun.” — Kevin O’Brien, Gear Patrol Account Manager

Ironman 70.3 Boulder, Boulder, CO

Date: August 3, 2019
Sign Up Date: Now
“Boulder, my home base, is arguably the endurance athlete capital of the world and the Ironman 70.3 draws some of the best triathletes locally and internationally. Boulder, sitting at 5,328 feet above sea level, will challenge myself and all athletes at this race in August 2019 for the swim, bike, run trifecta that will offer 30 qualifying slots to the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupõ, New Zealand.” — Massimo Alpian, Account Director, Outside PR

NYC Century, New York, NY

Date: September 2019
Sign Up Date: TBD
“NYC Century is a multi-level ride in September born out of a push to make NYC more bicycle friendly, which I strongly support. It’s interesting to me because I have never been a serious runner and my knees can no longer take the impact, but I can ride on a bicycle all day. The ride is my opportunity at an endurance challenge I wouldn’t normally be interested in.” — Jason Dakota Davis, Gear Patrol Sales Director, East Coast

New York City Marathon, New York, NY

Date: November 3, 2019
Sign Up Date: Now Through February 14
“Every November, some 45,000 people cross the finish line at the world’s most popular marathon. I’ve long dreamed of being one of them but haven’t for myriad of reasons that boil down to a lack of motivation and love of craft beer. Last year, I cut back on IPAs and completed my 9+1 for guaranteed entry. I recommend the program to any New Yorker who’d rather invest time than money in their own marathon come-up — though they could, of course, fundraise $2,620 and run through Team for Kids.” — Jack Seemer, Gear Patrol Senior Editor

The North Face 50K, Sausalito, CA

Date: November 16, 2019
Sign Up Date: Now
“I signed up last year (it was to be my first ultra!), and it was canceled due to the terrible air quality from the devastating local fires, so this race will be a long time coming. I’ve got another 50k planned for February in the Bay Area, the Golden Gate Trail Run, but if I can’t get prepared fully for that, then TNF will be my first attempt. It will be special as it’s in Outside PR’s backyard, the Marin Headlands, probably one of the most beautiful and dynamic trail running areas in the US, and alongside many friends of the agency — HOKA, GU and more!” — Jess Smith, VP, Outside PR

SpaceCoast Marathon, Cocoa, FL

Date: December 1, 2019
Sign Up Date: February 15, 2019
“This is the oldest marathon in Florida and is always the Sunday after Thanksgiving. It’s also the only space-themed marathon (and half marathon) that’ll give you the moonshot you need to hit your Boston Qualifying time.” — David Kilgore, On Running Athlete

The Gear You Need to Compete

Wahoo Fitness Kickr Smart Power Trainer

Keep your training up through winter so you’re ready to go for a mid-spring race like the Louisville Crit with a smart power trainer. Wahoo Fitness makes some of the best training tools available thanks to accurate stats and responsive feel.

On Cloud X

This stable running shoe provides cushion and structure to help you survive 30 miles on the streets of New York City with Orchard Street Runners.

Boston Marathon Adidas Z.N.E. Winter Run Jacket

In case the weather is as turbulent as it was last year for the Boston Marathon, you’ll want a wind and water-resistant jacket that helps you look like you’re a regular at speedy races. The fabric in this jacket keeps you dry during snow and rain storms.

New Balance 1400v6

For a distance as short as a mile, you’ll need a pair of speedy shoes to get you through the streets of Brooklyn. These road flats are just over seven ounces and built to win races. A breathable mesh upper and low profile tongue are sleek, while the REVlight foam feels supportive underfoot from mile one to 26.2.

Under Armour Horizon RTT

When the trail race is called Steep Rock, it’s not a big leap to think you’ll need shoes that are just as intense. This high traction runner will stomp over any root or rock in its way. It’s built for neutral runners who want something stable underfoot that won’t wobble along the trail.

TYR Hurricane Cat 5 Sleeveless Triathlon Wetsuit

With 30 of the Boulder Ironman winners advancing to the World Championships, you’ll want gear that can give you a competitive edge. This wetsuit is where you’ll need to start. Wetsuits provide buoyancy and speed while you’re in the water, which is important for both beginners and experts.

Specialized Propero III

Whether you tackle the New York City century ride as a race or a way to log some weekend miles, you’re going to need a proper helmet. This race-inspired helmet is easy to adjust with an integrated ANGi crash sensor and MIPS.

The North Face Men’s TKA 100 Glacier Glove

For a race as late in the year as the New York City marathon, you have to be prepared for weird temperature dips and highs. Protect your hands over the course of 26.2 miles with a pair of fleece-lined gloves.

Nathan VaporAir Hydration Pack Running Vest

The North Face 50K is longer than a marathon, so you’re going to want to carry your own water. This hydration pack is comfortable and stuffed with pockets so you can store snacks, gels, sunscreen and band-aids in an easy-to-reach spot.

Stance Warped R2D2 Crew

Stance makes some of the best running socks — and these Star Wars-themed ones are bound to be lucky, especially when worn to the SpaceCoast marathon.

8 Best Shoes for Marathon Runners

Running 26.2 miles requires logging hundreds of miles, a serious mental fortitude and a good pair of shoes. Read the Story

The 4 Pieces of Gear You Need to Start Boxing

Jab, cross, punch, duck! Your first boxing class can be intimidating, to say the least. Suit up with wraps and gloves, then get ready to kick the BOB dummy, punch the bag, or aim for your partner’s mitts. Whatever it is you’re aiming at, a boxing workout tests all of your muscles — especially your core — and will leave you drenched in sweat. We talked to seven pros to help you channel your inner Muhammad Ali.

The Vocabulary

Boxer Stance: Stand with feet parallel and hip-width distance apart, hands in fists close to face. Take your right foot back behind your left so left shoulder is facing your opponent or the bag. Stay light on your feet.

Jab: Start in boxer stance. Take a slight step forward as you extend left arm towards bag or opponent, fingernails facing down. As soon as your fist makes contact pull it back to start, and bring your feet back to hips-width distance.

Cross: Start in boxer stance. Start to straighten right arm with fingers and thumb facing toward the ground in a fist. Pivot right knee forward in the same direction as fist, twisting hips. Use the power from your hips to quickly make contact with the bag and then return to start.

Hook: A punch thrown with both the right and left hands, where you start outside the body and punch toward the midline of your body.

Upper Cut: Another punch thrown on both the right and left (typically called a front uppercut and back uppercut). You make a scooping motion with this punch.

Pro Tip: We highly recommend you arrive early to your first class. It’s not uncommon for the instructor to only review the punches before class starts. While it’s always best to let the teacher know if it’s your first time attending, knowing the terms above will act as a solid primer before your first class. (All of the terms above are for right-handed fighters, as opposed to left-handed ones, or Southpaw boxers. )

The Experts

We chatted with Kendall Toole, a founding trainer at Rumble Boxing in Los Angeles, Jess Sims, a trainer at Shadowbox in NYC, Rob McCullough, trainer at UFC Gyms, and Rise by We instructors Leonit Shaashua, Liv Adler, Mark Sayer and Maurice Hood.

The Gear

Gloves

While you can likely get find gloves at the boxing studio, they’re going to stink. “When you first start to train, you need only one pair of gloves, and they should be 14 to 16 ounces and allow you to make a proper fist,” Sayer says. “I’ve used a dozen brands over the years and my current favorite by far is Warrior Style. They allow you to make a proper fist.” What to look out for: “Cheap gloves will often only allow for what I call the ‘hitch-hiker fist,’ meaning the thumb up and not close to the proper closed position,” Sayer says.

Fighting Sports 12-ounce lace-ups are what Liv Adler, NASM CPT certified and registered USA Boxing Amateur fighter, recommends. “They feel broken in the second you put them on — not stiff and are a close fit to your hand,” she says. “They give me excellent wrist support and aren’t bulky or heavy feeling. They’re great for beginners and they’re only $100.” And when you’re ready to upgrade to something a little fancier and more technical than those gloves, Adler says Winnings gloves are the best. “These gloves start at $400, but they’re a perfect boxing glove. If you can afford it, this would be my number one recommendation.”

|

Shoes

“Just like you wouldn’t wear regular sneakers to a spin class, you’d ideally get a pair of boxing shoes because you need a lightweight, supportive, flexible shoe with good grip,” Sims says. “As far as boxing shoes go, I like Adidas the best, especially the Adidas Box Hogs,” Hood, a USA Boxing certified coach, says. “They feel as light as feathers and have great ankle support, which makes it easier to move around the ring.”

“When buying boxing boots, it’s essential to have a thin and flexible sole to keep you light on the toes. These Nike Hyperko boxing boots are swaggy and stylish. Opt for the classic black and silver, or go crazy with neon,” Toole says.

|

Wraps

Handwraps are your first line of defense and protection against the bag or mitts, and will also help dilute the stinky smell of used gloves if you aren’t quite ready to make that buying decision. Adler likes the Everlast 180 hand wraps because they’re “always 180 cm in length — never shorter — soft and don’t get messed up in the laundry.”

“My all-time favorite wraps [are the] BoxRaw yellow wraps,” Toole says. “The fabric holds up very well in the wash (always use a garment bag to prevent tangles!) and the velcro has a great sheen and thickness to it, that gives a little extra support to the wrists.”

And in terms of how to put them on — you can always opt for quick wraps, ask the head trainer, or check out YouTube for a how-to video, Sims recommends.

|

Jump Rope

This simple tool is one you should definitely have. “It’s cheap, portable, and crucial to help you understand being on your toes, and works your stamina,” Sims say.

Running With Music: Our Favorite Songs and Gear For the Road

The right song can get you up that next hill, help you crush a PR and change the entire mood of your workout. There’s a reason the Rocky theme song blasts in locker rooms across the country before a big game. While that song might not help you hit that last 400-meter sprint, there’s bound to be a song that will. Gear Patrol staffers are as particular about their tunes as we are with the gear we use to listen to to them.

Whether you’re gearing up for a spring race, or have hit a rut in your workout routine and need something new to listen to, our team has a new playlist to get you through your workout of the day. Plus, here’s the gear you need to carry and listen to that music.

While our gear picks vary, our entire team jams to music on either Spotify or Apple Music — except for one lone wolf who sticks with Amazon Music. Here, Gear Patrol staffers share the songs that pump them up and the gear that gets them there, too.

Kyle Snarr, Head of Marketing

Rococo by Arcade Fire is the ultimate sleeper power song. I launch this at the very end of my run when I think I’ve got absolutely nothing left. And somehow, every time, I find 4 more minutes of running inside of me that builds up to a full sprint.”

Will Price, Staff Writer

“My running music needs to be fairly consistent in pace, else I’ll start speeding up and slowing down in bursts with the cadence of the song. Brockhampton’s discography in 1999 Wildfire is the ideal mix of fast, weird, clever and funny. This track — which possesses the very relatable lyric ‘make me sweat like exercise, double up, milkshake and fries’ — goes hard enough keep it steady for miles on end. And any 4-minute song that can fit bars like ‘Well, now we’re eating grapes, and the finest cheese / Achieving wisdom from the wizards we were tryna be’ and ‘I bought a castle in the Shire with the moat and the catapult / I keep it clean with my medieval flow’ deserves multiple listens.”

A Guide to Gifting the Female Skier or Snowboarder in Your Life

Gifting doesn’t have to fall only during the holidays. Sometimes, it’s a nice way to nudge your significant other into turning your interest into a shared interest. Or, maybe you just want to show you care about her passions without need a reason (this is a good move, guys). Our female editors took to the mountains of Breckenridge and to Vail’s backcountry in Colorado to put some new ski and snowboard gear to the test. We threw in a few cute items for post-ski (or the non-skier) as well. Here are a few of our favorite pieces.

Contributions by Ali Carr and Meg Lappe.

Ski

Smartwool Merino 250 Base Layer Crew

This simple all-black shirt is toasty on the slopes thanks to Merino 250, Smartwool’s heaviest knit fabric. It’s not much thicker than a regular tee you’d throw on to go running, and the feel is soft, not scratchy, even after multiple washes.

Corbeaux Centennial Pant

As a petite female, finding the right pair of long underwear is daunting. The Centennial pants from Corbeaux, a ski company based in Aspen, are delightfully short. For women that are over 5’5″, these athletically cut leggings will fit like a cropped pant — perfect for layering socks on top. And for women 5’4″ and under, these pants won’t need any rolling or cuffing, which means no uncomfortable bunching in boots. The wide waistband didn’t move despite long runs, seemingly hundreds of moguls and all the chair lift rides. Pick from eight colors and patterns.

Falke SK2 Ski Knee-High Sock

The blend of acrylic and wool mean these ski socks are slimmer than expected but provide enough cushion for your feet in sturdy ski boots. While many people think the thicker the socks, the warmer they’ll be, that’s not the case — it’s the materials that determine how feet feel on the slopes. Falke’s SK2 sock blend protection and comfort with the proper padding under the heel and on the shin — exactly where you need it.

Smith Optics Vantage Women’s Helmet

This helmet has been a mainstay on “Best Helmet” lists for years (case in point, here) and it still doesn’t disappoint. With closable vents, plush ear-pads (that can integrate audio) and easy-to-use adjustability, every bell and whistle is here. The best part, though? Its safety system — MIPS is the most innovative technology when it comes to minimizing concussions. Unlike foam, MIPS is constructed of an interior shell that moves independently of the exterior shell, which means a blow to the head won’t translate as severely.

Snowboarder Base Layers

Merino Ninja Suit

Throwing on this one base layer instead of two makes sense; it’s fewer things to worry about in a sport that already requires a lot of juggling. We liked the thumb gaskets, high collar at the neck and built-in hood when the wind picked up and the 350-degree waist zipper was super convenient when nature called in the backcountry.

On the Mountain: Skier

Aether Nordic Jacket

This water- and wind-resistant jacket comes in all black, which means when she’s done with all those black diamonds, she can wear this jacket to work the following Monday. A nylon stretch material paired with a slim cut is flattering. The Primaloft Gold wool and side body panels ensure warmth even when the winds hit 50 miles per hour.

Aether Descent Snow Bib

Gone are the days of slouchy unflattering bibs. These Aether overalls-like pants are high-waisted with adjustable straps to work with your height. While they’re a bit long for women 5’4″ and under, they’re ideal for all-day wear — even off the mountain. Despite intense windchills on the Breckenridge ski lifts, our legs stayed comfortable, even against the metal seats. Whether walking or skiing, the pants are super flexible, so you’ll never felt constricted or stuck.

On the Mountain: Snowboarder

Burton Gore-Tex Kimmy Anorak

Anoraks are hot right now and we loved this one— snowboarder Kimmy Fasani’s pro model — for the sunny, warm-weather days in the backcountry. When paired with the Burton Women’s AK Gore-Tex 3L Kimmy Bib Pant, we got tons of compliments on our kit. And it worked well, too, for aggressive riding, when you want full freedom of motion. Once a storm rolled in, it was easily to add a mid-layer under the anorak for insulation. Beware: anoraks are notorious for difficult on-and-off.

Holden Lotus Bib

Petite women, rejoice! There is a pair of snowboard bibs out there that aren’t overly baggy and didn’t require any rolling of the bottom hem (for our 5’2″ tester in XS). Welcome, the Holden Lotus Bib, which is hardcore enough for the burliest of storms and features plenty of stretch for all-day comfort at the resort or in the backcountry.

Apres

Stio Sweetwater Fleece Cowl

Whether your apres involves bar hopping, exploring the town or cooking up a meal, this sweater is just the right amount of cozy. A cowl neck eliminates the need for a scarf, and the fleece inside is incredibly soft. Three quarter length sleeves ensure you’re not dragging the ends in your food or drink, and a drop-tail hem works great with leggings.

Eddie Bauer Hunt Pac Mid Boot

The duck boot gets an upgrade with a fabric upper and waterproof membrane to protect feet from any winter precipitation. A non-marking molded traction outsole gripped on icy parking lots and along sidewalks as our team hit up local hotspots like The Canteen, Rocky Mountain Underground and The Crown in Breckenridge. The Eddie Bauer boots blended in with each changing environment from breakfast up through bar hopping. As temperatures dipped below 20 degrees, the foam cushioning underfoot keeps the heat inside, so all you need is one layer of socks.

Patagonia Los Gatos Fleece Vest

Whether you need an added layer over a sweater or base layer or need to have more pockets on your person, a fuzzy vest is an easy add. With nine colors to choose from, there’s bound to be an option that matches everything you own. The soft exterior doesn’t get caught on jackets and maintains its look — even after a handful of washes.

Tory Sport Down Bomber Jacket

Tory Burch is synonymous with preppy, and her sports line exemplifies that. This puffy coat takes its inspiration from the varsity jackets everyone wore in high school, but much more flattering. The oversize fit means you can wear your chunkiest knit sweater underneath and the fleece lined pockets provide an added means of hand protection from harsh winds.

Marbled Polyblend Crew Socks

After a day of trekking up the mountain in tight boots and constantly flexing toes to make some space in your socks, the stretch and plush-feel of these blue and tan socks are exactly what feet crave. The polyester-spandex blend creates a cushioning that doesn’t cram up in shoes or boots. The socks work double duty as slipper socks at the end of the night.

Point Sur Boxy Pointelle Sweater

Taut clothing after a day on the slopes is the farthest thing anyone wants. That’s why this silky-soft oversize sweater is ideal for apres activities, whether you’re lounging around the cabin in leggings or heading out on the town for sushi dinner.

Teva Foxy Waterproof Boot

Waterproof leather boots that don’t scream “snowmaggedon” and require leg muscles to lug around are high our our list of favorite things. These translate whether you’re bopping around New York City on a dreary day or window shopping in Aspen on a slushy afternoon. Comfortable, low-key, but dressy enough to wear out to dinner, these boots are a wardrobe staple.

Spy Optic Hi-Fi

One the slopes = goggles. Always. On the deck drinking a beer or eating lunch? Glasses. No matter what you’re doing, defending your eyes at wintry high altitude where snow blindness is a real thing is key. We like Spy Optic’s Hi-Fi model for their stylish looks and low price tag.

The 13 Best Valentine’s Day Gifts For the Gym Nut

Finding the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the gym-lover doesn’t have to be tricky. Whether his idea of the perfect day starts and ends with protein powder or a WOD, or if he is addicted to Peloton or FlyWheel, he’ll love the gift ideas below. These 13 gifts are great for everyone from the yogi to the rock climber.

Get Cairn

The perfect gift for the outdoorsman, this subscription box allows users to test out everything from a Rumpl blanket to Thermarest sleeping pad to a Hydro Flask mug to Picky Bars. Each box is curated to the users’ needs, whether they’re really into cycling, running or hiking. Pick from a monthly or quarterly delivery to test out gear, food, skin care, apparel and emergency products. It’s the gift that won’t stop.

SoulCycle x Lululemon Exclusive T.H.E. Short Gray

These super lightweight shorts work just as well in an indoor cycling class as they do boxing. The shorts are linerless, sweat-wicking and quick-drying. If the temperatures spike and it’s warm enough to head out on a run mid-winter, these reflect and will be seen by fellow cyclists and cars alike.

Rapha Weekend Bag

While this bag is built for weekend cycling trips, it also works beautifully as a gym bag. It’ll hold enough sweaters for a short getaway as well as all the gear needed for a day at work. The durable all-black material looks great and the interior is filled with pockets for everything from your phone to laptop. A sleek design adds some elegance to an otherwise simple-looking exterior. Carry it as a duffle or add a strap to wear as a messenger.

Vuori Sunday Performance Jogger

These are the sweatpants to slip on to get to and from the gym, but once they’re on, they might not come off. Vuori’s high-performance sweats tackle the indoor climbing walls without breaking a sweat and then go straight to the game. Vuori’s fabric is smooth, sleek and cozy all in one. Blend that with quick-drying and moisture-wicking features and these pants will never get Marie Kondo’ed.

Rhone Celliant Seamless 1/4 Zip

Rhone’s minimalist vibe shines in the gym, on the golf course and in transit. The seamless quarter-zip won’t scratch while running or shooting hoops. A body-hugging fit means the pull-over will stretch and mimic every movement and the SilverTech threads help keep the quarter-zip stink-free by destroying odor-causing bacteria.

Merrell Ontario Mid

If the idea of a perfect day includes heading out on the trails but is constrained to the conundrum of city living, these Merrell hikers are a great compromise. These boots come with a full grain leather upper and blue laces, plus a Vibram Megagrip outsole. The pair is sharp and rugged. Whether tackling the AT or a local trail, the Ontario Mid will protect feet and ankles. Pick up a pair in black, olive, dark brown or tan.

Live Larq Bottle

The bottle uses UV-C light to clean its insides, so there’s no grime left behind after daily use. In other reusable water bottles, it’s easy to notice the build-up along the lid or inside — and sometimes there’s even a smell. While it can be simple to clean with a sponge, this bottle eliminates that hassle. Charge the lid with a USB, and it’ll keep the bottle clean for up to two months. Water stays cold for 24 hours in this 17-ounce bottle. While the price tag is high for a reusable water bottle, the money you save on cleaning supplies and throw-away bottles make this worth it.

West + Wilder Wine

It’s hard to beat the feeling of sitting around the campfire with a beer in your hand — unless you prefer wine. That’s the reason Kenny Rochford and Matt Allan started West + Wilder in early 2018. A bottle of wine doesn’t lend itself to a camping trip or a day at the beach due to its sometimes cavernous and heavy glass. These 8.4-ounce cans come in packs of three, the equivalent of a 750-milliliter bottle of wine (what is typically sold in the grocery store). Right now there are four types to choose from: rosé, white, sparkling rosé or sparkling white.

Polar Vantage V

This top-of-the-line tracker is perfect for the athlete in your life. The most exciting feature in this new tracker is the ability for it to measure running power — typically you need a foot pod to gauge that, but thanks to optical heart rate measurement, skin contact sensors, your GPS and barometer data, all you need is this around your wrist. Polar Vantage V also monitors your training load so it can tell you when it’s time to take a day off. Pick an orange, white or black band to pair with the silver bezel.

Arc’teryx Aptin Zip Hoody

When running or skiing during the winter months, a durable hoody that contains warmth and knows when to let it breathe is essential. This hoody will help you ease into the first few miles, then prevent overheating. Arc’teryx teamed up with Polartec to use Power Dry fleece that helps spread out sweat, so it evaporates into the air faster. Akrose, a polyester fabric, starts at the rib cage and stretches up to the shoulders to stop the wind from piercing on summits and street corners.

Tracksmith NDO Vest

While the polar vortex has lifted its grip on the Midwest and East Coast, there’s still potentially a lot of cold weather in the near future. The NDO vest traps the exact amount of heat you need to keep going, to help combat the frigid temperature on runs, hikes or bike rides, all while letting the arms breathe. Tracksmith tapped The Woolmark Company to test out Schoeller wool in its vest form. Unlike down or fleece vests, this one won’t wet out, it blocks the wind, is airy and not bulky in the slightest.

Society6 Guitar in Abstract Yoga Mat

This yoga mat encourages all types of practice, whether the goal is to perfect a headstand or enjoy Savasana once a week. At 3.6-pounds this musical yoga mat isn’t a beast to carry to class or just into the other room. It is also nice enough to leave out, but it does come with a 1.5-inch carrying strap, so it is also a breeze to store.

Theragun G3Pro

Recovery is an integral part to every athletes’ success. While elites enjoy weekly massages and a personal physical therapist, that might not be accessible to the general public. The next best thing is a massage tool. The Theragun G3Pro is a third iteration handheld massager and claims to be 50 percent quieter than its predecessors. In just 15 minutes it can work out any kinks, activate muscles for a warm up and then post-workout, help with a cool down. The six varieties of attachments work on large muscle groups, those tricky IT bands, lower back, trigger point therapy and tender areas.

The 10 Best Reading Chairs of 2019

The reading chair is a funny classification because it’s not really official by any furniture standard. When we talk about reading chairs, we mean seats that promote relaxation, security and protection from the demands of the world outside your book (including the harsh demands of gravity).

You could say the reading chair is the evolutionary high point of sitting down. A good reading chair is one you can stay in for hours and hours, poring through detective novels, newspapers or websites like this one. You could even watch TV in a reading chair — we’re really not sticklers about the term. It’s possible you have one already — one that you’ve been carrying with you move after move after move. But if you don’t, here are some more than worthy options.

Contribution by Peter Saltsman and Will Price.

Ikea Poäng Armchair

The Poäng is four decades old, and it’s one of the few early Ikea designs to enjoy popularity throughout every stage of the Swedish dorm outfitter’s long history. How has it lasted so long? While it’s not the standard of design excellence, it’s cheap, lightweight, good-looking and easy to care for — a much sought-after and unfortunately rare set of attributes.

Target Garrison Pillow Top Recliner

Part of Target’s Project 62 collection, the Garrison recliner is a hyper-affordable, surprisingly comfortable chair to cozy up to. As with most Target furniture, check if you can ship it to your local store for pickup before shipping directly to your own home — you’ll save both time and the potential for clumsy delivery people.

Rivet North End Accent Chair

Rivet is one of Amazon’s in-house furniture brands and it’s vaguely mid-century modern. Amazon says that the pieces are “sure to turn heads,” which isn’t really true. The North End accent chair does the opposite — it’s the ideal corner reading chair for those who would rather keep it low-key, and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that.

West Elm Book Nook Armchair

When you think about a reading chair, you may conjure up a tall, wide chair that takes up an entire corner of a room. They don’t have to be that. West Elm’s Book Nook chair is built for those of us without the square-footage to accommodate other options on this list. A simple wheat-colored upholster job covers a compact, pleasantly priced wood-framed chair. Plus, the armrests dip just enough to keep your elbows rested and a book squarely in front of your face.

Article Matrix Chair

Article typically keeps things fairly simple from a design standpoint — affordable mid-century modern with contemporary twists. The Matrix chair isn’t this. Its curvy lines and velvet upholstery are more disco than Sinatra, and it’s better for it. As with all velvet, do you best to keep it out of the sun and fluff regularly.

Hem Hai Chair

Hem is the ideal marriage of high-end design and the online marketplace. Its furniture is beautiful, made with premium materials and designed by some of the brightest creative minds in Europe (it’s based in Stockholm), but it’s also much quicker about shipments, ease of assembly (and disassembly) and customer service than many brick-and-mortar design outlets. The Hai chair epitomizes this. A blend of mid-century in form and contemporary lines, it comes in small pieces and can be assembled without tools. It also comes in six colors with the option to add an ottoman.

Blu Dot New Standard Lounge Chair

In a memo sent to eventual co-founding partners Maurice Blanks and Charlie Lazor, John Christakos described an early vision of Blu Dot as follows: “I am still leaning towards smart design for middle-class America. The Shaker thing with the nineties twist, babe.” A couple decades later and the trio’s company has done just that — luxe design that doesn’t get stuck in the rhythms and pomp of luxe design. Available upholstered and in leather, the New Standard lounge sports wide arms, a loose cushion and wiry splayed legs. It’s essentially a throne for regular people.

Room & Board Bram Club Chair

The leather club chair is about as classic as it gets. Room & Board’s offering is more minimal than most — it can be dressed up or down and it looks good with furniture from almost any era. Room & Board also offers free design consultation, white glove delivery and makes the vast majority of its furniture in the US. Prepare for the sickest patina of your life.

Vitsoe 620 Chair

Designed by the great Dieter Rams, Vitsoe’s 620 chair programme has remained the same since 1962. Replacement parts, leathers and materials from the earliest models are as they were then. Rams’s chair combines nearly unbreakable sheet moulding and untreated, full-grain leather to make a chair with a foot in tradition and science fiction.

Eames Lounge Chair

“This is the ability to select among the unlimited possibilities and return considerable richness to the world.” That’s how Today Show co-host Lee Meriweather captured Charles and Ray Eames’s ability to make old things new at the release of the Eames Lounge Chair in 1956. If there were a Tolkien-esque “one chair to rule them all,” it would be the Eames’s transcendent lounger. The 20th century’s answer to the 19th century’s club chair was designed to neutralize pressure on the lower back and mimic the look of a baseball mitt (leather folds included). It is unquestionably the most recognizable piece of high design ever conceived on American soil. The chair is made today in much the same way it was in decades past, but nowadays you get to pick leather colors, upholstered cushions, wood veneer finishes and more.

The Best Wines to Drink on Valentine’s Day, According to Experts

Valentine’s Day is all about the time we spend together. So when it comes to picking out a wine for dinner, you’ll want something that encourages conversation, not contemplation. With that in mind, we asked the purveyors of three notable wine stores to share a favorite bottle that won’t break the bank. Can’t find their picks? Dial in on a grape or region and ask someone at your local wine store to point you in the right direction. You’ll do just fine.

No Fine Print Cabernet Sauvignon

“One of my favorite new go-to bottles, especially for easy drinking, is a new wine from friends in the wine and music biz. It has everything you want out of a juicy Cabernet — bold, full-flavored, powerful, quality — but none of the things that you don’t, like a high price tag. Whether you’re planning to grill up a nice steak, order some Shake Shack or Netflix and chill, this would fit the bill quite nicely.” — Dustin Wilson, Verve Wine

Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: California, USA
Price: ~$21

Distillerie Cazottes Marcotte

“Laurent Cazottes is best known for his Eaux de Vie but he also makes rustic, highly-drinkable table wines. His vineyards are worked biodynamically, including the Duras and Braucol that are in his cuvée Marcotte. We opened a bottle just a few days ago and it felt like the perfect cold-night red; savory, plumy core with just a little tang. It needs no food but seems very versatile — especially good with anything coming out of an oven.” — Orenda and Peter Hale, Maine & Loire

Grapes: Braucol, Duras
Region: Tarn, France
Price: ~$19

Gaspard Touraine Sauvignon Blanc

“Crisp white wine made from organic grapes grown around the northern French city of Tours. Loire Valley Sauvignon tends to be drier and less overtly grapefruity than its New Zealand counterpart. With herbal notes of lemon verbena and acacia, [this] is an example of how subtle restraint can allow a wine to show more complexity.” — Tristen Gild, Kingston Wine Co.

Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Loire Valley, France
Price: ~$17

The Best New Gym Sneakers of 2019

So you started the new year strong — hitting the gym daily, meal prepping with more fruits and vegetables and possibly even dabbling in meditation. But now, it’s February and resolutions are fading fast. Or maybe it’s the opposite, and you are continuously crushing your weight goal and need something to keep you inspired. Either way, a new pair of gym shoes is a great way to solidify your routine or help jump-start a new one.

Whether you’ve already pounded the outsoles of your last pair of gym sneakers or you’re in dire need of some new gear, these gym shoes dropped within the last 30 days and are available right now.

Under Armour TriBase Reign

At 10.3-ounces and a 2-mm drop, you’ll feel grounded so you can knock out your heaviest squat and lunge combinations. The full rubber outsole wraps around the side of the shoe, so you can finally reach the top of the rope climb, and the foam midsole is firm, yet supportive for CrossFit workouts and beyond. Pair all that with an abrasion-resistant upper and you have a durable shoe. The UA TriBase Reign works best for weight lifting and WODs.

Lane Eight Trainer AD 1

Back in August of last year, Lane Eight launched its first training shoe built for athletes at every level. The two founders, Josh and James Shorrock, wanted to design a shoe that you can wear to the gym, for a pickup game and a short run. In January, the brand dropped two new colors: burgundy and indigo.

Nike Metcon 4 XD

The Metcon has been a staple in every CrossFitter’s gym kit since 2015. While not a ton has changed since the first version, each iteration has its fans. The 4 XD features a 3D upper that’s durable and reinforced all over instead of just the heavy hitting areas. The new fabric stretches from toe to heel. Nike kept the outsole, TPU heel clip and 4-mm drop all the same. You’ll still find these are best for deadlifts, sled pushes, track starts and explosive movements.

Adidas Alphabounce Instinct

The original Alphabounce shoes made the best gym sneakers list for mixed-use gym shoes in 2018, and this Instinct update doesn’t fall too far from the originals. The seamless upper is supportive, yet flexible for when you need to go straight from mountain climbers to lateral hops. The shoe is built to move with you on runs, as well as quickly from side to side. It’s 12-ounces, so on the heavier side of shoes and the 10-mm drop isn’t something you’ll want to lift weights in but works perfectly on any machines at the gym as well as on the track.

Hoka One One Cavu 2

Hoka One One is famous for its plush cushioning that will help save your knees during marathons and ultras, but the brand went minimalist with the Cavus and the second iteration is no different. Running shorter distances in the Cavu 2 is possible, but it also shines on the gym floor. A 5-mm drop and 7.2-ounce weight make this lightweight trainer ideal for a cardio or HIIT class. A breathable mesh upper means your feet are comfortable well past the duration of your workout.

10 of the Best Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gifts

The 14th of February has a nasty habit of sneaking up. Just when the year feels like it is finally getting a move on and the holiday season is in the rearview, Valentine’s Day rears its head. If you’re only now looking for a gift to give this Valentine’s Day — we get it; That’s why we built out a list of 10 last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts to buy.

From grooming gifts to chocolate and tech, everything on this list can be ordered through Amazon Prime, so it will show up within 2 days. And about the scramble? She never has to know.

Bath and Body Works Shower Steamers

There are two types of people in the world, those who have the ability to take a bath and those who are stuck with showers. Despite what many think, being in the latter category doesn’t necessarily preclude you from enjoying great bathing products. Take these shower steamers for instance. While they dissolve, the tablets release an aromatic mixture of essential oils that will fill your shower and bathroom with a nice, fresh scent.

Plant Therapy Chamomile Essential Oil

If your partner has an oil diffuser that they always have humming along, consider setting them up with what we consider to be among the best essential oils out there. In addition to its fantastic fragrance, Plant Therapy’s pure essential oils don’t feature any additives or fillers so you can run them without any worries.

HU Dark Chocolate Bars

When it comes to Valentine’s Day gifts, it’s hard to go wrong with chocolate. But on that same token, you can’t quite just go for the classic Hershey bar. This 4 pack of chocolate bars from Hu is made from a house-ground cacao and features an unexpected savory twist that makes it hard to put down.

Tile Sport Key Finder

Have a forgetful partner? Always find yourself searching for their keys? Consider the Tile Pro. These little EDC additions essentially act as beacons that allow you to find your keys more quickly when they get lost. And given that you are reading a last-minute gift guide for Valentine’s Day that’s aimed at the forgetful, you may also want to get one for yourself.

Echo Dot

Sure, Amazon’s Echo Dot smart speaker may not be an overtly romantic gift but it sure is a useful one. The small but great-sounding speaker can play news, radio and music over a variety of streaming services as well as do things like order items from Amazon and control smart home devices. Consider it a gift of convenience.

Wahl Clipper

If the guy in your life is struggling to keep the fuzz under control, consider gifting this stainless steel clipper from Wahl. It’s a favorite of ours at the office thanks to its long lasting battery, attractive design, and self-sharpening blade technology. It’s a gift he’ll be sure to get a lot of use out of.

Anker Wireless Earbuds

When it comes to affordable true wireless headphones, these are among the best out there. In addition to featuring a solid 3.5 hour playtime and boasting great sound, these headphones have an IPX5 rating making them ideal for wearing while running or at the gym.

Kindle E-Reader

If your partner is a reader, it can be difficult to find the right book to give on an occasion like Valentine’s Day. The best solution is to leave the decision up to them by gifting an e-reader. Not only will they have access to a near limitless number of books, but they’ll find it that much easier to sneak in a couple pages on the go.

Glerups Unisex Model B Slipper

Giving the gift of comfort is never a bad way to go. For those cozy days in, get them these wool slippers from Glerups. Much like a good relationship, the pure wool upper and calf-skin sole are designed to be broken in and made more comfortable over time.

Timex Marlin

Want to make a big gesture despite the short timeline? Gift Timex’s hand-wound mechanical watch. The timepiece has a mid-century look and feel that even the big watch nerd will appreciate strapping on for daily wear.

The 11 Best Valentine’s Day Gifts for the Car Lover

Gift shopping for car lovers is a certified minefield. Get the wrong gift – something over-branded, overtly automotive and too on the nose, or tacky – and you’ll know. Because you’ll never see it again. Find a gift with just a hint of automotive passion and thoughtful design, and it’ll become part of their EDC, tucked right next to their car keys. Look no further than these ten gifts for a guaranteed victory.

Porsche Design P’3644 Lighter

Manufacturer-branded merch is rife with massive logos, over branding and almost always a certian failure. Porsche Design products, like the Porsche Design P’3644 Lighter, dont follow that trope. “Porsche Design” is subtley typed along the side and the matte metal casing of the wind-resistant jet lighter feels on par with a modern Zippo.

Roav Viva Pro by Anker

There are 12v socket chargers and then there’s the Roav Viva Pro by Anker. Dual USB charging is merely a baseline; what the Roav Viva Pro really brings to the table is Amazon’s Alexa for in-car voice activated navigation, music streaming and for taking calls. If the car lover in your life is also a vintage car owner, this is the perfect way to lightly modernize their daily drives.

Candy Lab Toys Woodie

Every car lover can appreciate a Candy Lab Toys Woodie. The wooden blocks are expertly carved to pay homage to mid-century automotive designs and make for excellent desk furniture or an end piece on a bookshelf as off-the-wall art.

Autodromo Monoposto Chronograph

The skill with which Autodromo perfectly captures the historic design of old Italian dashboards and instrument dials is unparalleld. Automotive-themed watches can easily fall into the dreaded pit of too on-the-nose when it comes to inspiration. Not here. The Monoposto chronograph harkens back to the tachomters of old Ferraris and Alfa Romeos and their racing heritage in such a subtle way that even non car lovers wouldn’t mind one for V-Day.

Forza Horizon 4

The latest installment in the Forza franchise is something not to miss. Forza Horizon 4 is the most expansive edition of the game yet, letting players explore an entire world, racing through plublic streets in their favorite cars (in the safety of their own home, of course).

Roav by Anker Dash Cam C2 Pro

Dash cams aren no longer only for random YouTube videos uploaded in Russia. Roav by Anker Dash Cam C2 Pro can provide video evidence for insurance in worst-case scenarios day or night thanks to HD night vision tech. The Roav also equips your car with GPS logging, built-in Wi-Fi, G-sensor and loop recording.

Bentley Rollerball Pen

You can’t just gift someone any old pen. It has to be special and have the right weight and feel to be something they’ll want on their desk for years to come. So, if you want to give your loved one a pen, look no further, this is the Bentley of pens, quite literally.

Aston Martin 32GB USB Memory Stick

Just like an ordinary pen makes a horrible Valintines Day gift, so does a plain USB stick. But, if said USB stick is 32 GB, metal and laser engraved with the legendary Aston Marin logo, it’s a different story entirely.

Best Made Co. 15″ Toolbox

Toolboxes take more of a beating in the garage than anyone realizes, but there’es a reason your grandfther’s simple, red metal tool box is still heeding the call of duty decades in – it’s as tough as the nails it carries. Best Made Co. brings that timeless design and resiliance to its 15″ Toolbox. Gift this toolbox to your valentine and it’ll be an immediate family heirloom.

Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow Jacket

Not everything the car lover needs is so obviously related to the automotive world. Patagonia’s Stretch Rainshadow Jacket has a hint of vintage style to it and makes the perfect companion on chilly mornings during overland expeditions or on a rainy commute during the week.

Vans OG Classic LX Canvas Slip-On Sneakers

Some people go out of their way to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy driving loafers that end up being uncomfortable and tacky. An insider tip? Vans OG Slip-ons make for some of the best heel-toe shifting shoes on the market.

The 10 Best Tech Gifts to Buy Your Loved Ones

Chocolates get eaten and flowers wilt, but the right gadget will last your loved one years. And that’s what you want in a Valentine’s Day gift: longevity. Here are 10 non-perishable, non-cheesy gifts that fit the bill perfectly.

Fuji Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic Instant Camera

We’re living through a digital age but some of the best things are still analog — like a picture. Fuji’s instant camera not only produces tangible photos to hang on the wall or fridge, it’s the coolest-looking instant film camera around. (And it works with both color and monochrome film.)

Sangean WR-11 SE Table Top Radio

A traditional AM/FM radio is a step back in time — and that’s romantic. This vintage-inspired model has a lovely volume knob and it’s solid enough so you won’t have to worry about dinging it up. There’s no Bluetooth or wireless streaming, which is par for the course with vintage audio gear, but it does have an aux jack so you can wire up your iPhone and play music that way.

Arturia Microbrute

This is a great gift for aspiring musicians. The Microbrute is an entry-level synthesizer that’s easy to use, but it’s still sophisticated enough to appeal to folks who want to take their music a little more seriously.

Braun BNC004 Alarm Clock

Straight up, we love an old-school alarm clock. This one’s practical and strikingly pretty, a welcome addition to any night stand. It also has a voice-activated snooze button, so you can tell it to “shut up” instead of having to slap it.

Killspencer Valet Tray

A valet tray is an elegant place to hold one’s EDC (everyday carry) — that’s gearspeak for your wallet, keys, AirPods, etc. This one is classy and would a great gift for people who don’t already use a catchall.

Dovetail Record Crate by Symbol Audio

A wooden record crate is a terrific gift and Symbol Audio makes some of the most beautiful models around. It’s available in two finishes: rustic oak or natural walnut.

Nomad Base Station Wireless Charging Hub

Here’s a unique desktop accessory, not because it looks a nice — an elegant combo of dark leather and space gray aluminum — but because it can wirelessly charge two Qi-enabled devices at once. It also has two additional USB ports (one USB-A, one USB-C), so it won’t hog your laptop’s ports, either.

iPhone XS Smart Battery Case

The best thing about Apple’s iPhone cases is that they’re silicon and feel better in your hand than other cases. This one also works as a power bank that can almost double your iPhone’s battery life. Purchase it any of the new iPhones, as well as last year’s iPhone X.

Polar Vantage V Multi-Sport Smartwatch

Not everybody wants an Apple Watch. Even though its excellent smartwatch with a strong emphasis on fitness and health, there are other options out there for those who are even more serious athletes. The Polar Vantage V, for example, is a beast. It’s the company’s most advantaged GPS smartwatch, decked out with all the sensors and specs to help any runner, cyclist or swimmer get in tip-top race shape.

Topo Designs Mountain Duffel 40L (black)

This duffel back is super versatile. Use it as a travel bag, backpack, weekender or even a messenger. It’s durable, made from tough nylon, and it has a padded base.

Casper Glow Light

Casper, the company famous for its deliverable mattress, has found a new way to help you sleep: lights. The Glow Light looks like a miniture HomePod, but instead of playing music, it gradually dims itself (and you) into sleep mode.

The 15 Best Valentine’s Day Gifts For Men Under $75

Gift shopping is a breeze when money’s no object, but for most of us, it’s nice to show our love and appreciation without breaking the bank. There’s also the question of how serious a Valentine’s Day gift should be — did you just meet? Have you been married for decades? Regardless, any of us can find it tough to choose the perfect little something to say, “Here, I was thinking of you.” The good news is we’ve assembled a broad list of items that all make great gifts—all at under $75. Whether the man in your life needs to refresh his EDC, wants a little kitchen inspiration, loves a dose of luxury or just appreciates a great bottle of champagne, we’ve got a pick for you.

Love Letters of Great Men

This anthology of love letters, written by notable historical figures from Ludwig Van Beethoven to John Keats and Winston Churchill, is the kind of thing that will make you feel warm and fuzzy all over. It’s a highly-digestible read that can be taken one page at a time, making it easy for anyone—even the busiest people—to dig into.

Hill City Socks

A quality pair of socks is a low-key-yet-excellent gift. Most socks are functional but forgettable and just as likely to get lost in the laundry. This pair stands out in the best way; for socks, that’s a strong endorsement.

Craighill Enameled Keyring

This practical and stylish alternative to the hum-drum steel keyring will keep a guy’s keys where they belong — the kind of gift you get for a guy who’s lucky his head is screwed onto his shoulders.

A Man & His Watch

This volume is a wealth of horological history, from Paul Newman’s now-iconic Rolex Daytona to the timepieces worn by Brat Pack members and U.S. presidents. Few things tell a story quite like the patina of a great old timepiece, and that’s exactly how this book lays it out for you.

Archie’s Press City Map Print

These letterpress prints are a wildly-cool and slightly-offbeat take on the map art trend, and the fact that they’re made for just about any city in the USA makes them the perfect gift for someone with a healthy dose of hometown pride.

RTIC Double-Wall Travel Mug

While there are dozens (maybe even hundreds) of different travel mugs you can choose from on Amazon, it’s rare that a single one works really well, looks good, and holds up to daily use. This is that mug, and we endorse it.

Lodge Cast-Iron Cookbook & Lodge Skillet

Lodge has helped make cast-iron cookware more affordable and popular than any brand has in recent memory, and a piece of that success can be accredited to just how capable the classic cast-iron skillet can be. Cast iron makes a terrific tool for the budding home chef, especially when you gift it with Lodge’s own cookbook, which is packed with recipes for cornbreads, pies, roasted dinners and much more.

A Sappy Pop Record

Music recommendations run the risk of falling flat, but a sappy pop record like this one works well for the occasion. The 1975’s “I like it when you sleep…” is catchy, upbeat and more than sweet enough to qualify for the perfect Valentine’s Day vinyl.

Missoni Wool Scarf

A brushed lambswool scarf like this one will hold up to use (and occasional abuse) better than most cashmere ones, and Missoni’s quality weave won’t feel scratchy against your skin. With a selection of neutral colors, this scarf makes a great gift you’ll always be able to “borrow” back when you forget your own.

Perrier-Jouët Champagne

To make your low-key night-in more special, there’s nothing like sharing a nice bottle of bubbly. Bonus points if you figure out the perfect food or chocolate pairing and have the ice bucket ready to go.

Gear Patrol Tote Bag

For practical gifts, it’s hard to beat a nice rugged tote bag. This collaboration from the Gear Patrol team is extremely burly and slightly oversized, which makes it perfect for hauling to the gym, the office, or even out of town for the weekend.

Artifact Uprising Prints

Whether you want to create a photo album or just get one large print to hang on the wall, you can look to Artifact Uprising to do it right. This company specializes in high-quality printing of whatever images you send in, and their print processes and framing techniques are nothing short of excellent.

Uniqlo Cashmere Sweater

It’s hard to go wrong with a cashmere sweater. Uniqlo’s crew, turtle- and v-neck options come in a wide palette of neutral and jewel-toned colors, and at a price that makes them an easy buy when you want to give a gift that feels hugely luxurious.

Wahl Beard Trimmer

This well-made trimmer is housed in stainless steel and boasts one of the best rechargable runtimes we’ve come across. One full charge will yield hours of use, but best of all, you can shave for three minutes with one 60-second charge — perfect for rushed mornings and last-minute touch-ups.

Crosley Portable Record Player

High-end hi-fi this is not, but Crosley’s basic portable record player is portable, extremely simple to use and gives you access to whatever vinyl you have lying around — or the stack of jazz albums you’re about to discover at a sidewalk sale.

Flour Water Salt Yeast: The Fundamentals of Artisan Bread and Pizza

Outdoor Voices 7/8 Springs Leggings

The Best Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas of 2019

Valentine’s Day has to be among the more polarizing holidays we all celebrate. On the one hand, there are people who jump at the opportunity to celebrate romantic love. On the other? Well, the rest of us. And at first blush, the idea that the one holiday that’s laser-focused on romantic love wouldn’t be universally celebrated comes off as a little odd. Who doesn’t love love? Of course, the distaste for the holiday has less to do with the sentiment behind it and a lot more to do with how hard it is to find a sufficient gift or make the right gesture. How much is too much? How little too little? The stakes are high.

Finding a Valentine’s Day gift doesn’t have to be such a fraught experience. To help limit whatever gift-giving anxiety you may feel, we’ll be rolling out themed gift-guides throughout the rest of this week and into next. Each will appear here on this page. Whether your relationship is just getting started or has grown and matured over years, we’re sure you’ll find something worth giving. Just don’t stress it too much.

Best Fitness Valentine’s Day Gifts

Rapha RCC Weeklong Bag

While this bag is built for weeklong cycling trips, it also works beautifully as a gym bag. It’ll hold enough sweaters for a weekend as well as all the gear needed for a day at work. The durable all-black material is water-resistant, so excess shower water and sweat won’t destroy it. Leather binding and fine herringbone webbing elements add some elegance to an otherwise simple-looking exterior. Carry it as a duffle or flip the straps to wear as a backpack.

Vuori Sunday Performance Jogger

These are the sweatpants to slip on to get to and from the gym, but once they’re on, they might not come off all weekend long. Vuori’s high-performance sweats tackle the indoor climbing walls without breaking a sweat and then go straight to brunch.

These boots come with a full grain leather upper paired with blue laces look sharp, while the Vibram Megagrip outsole keeps the boots rugged.

While the price tag is high for a reusable water bottle, it’s the ideal gift for the guy who is particular about his cleanliness and drinks a lot of water.

Hudson Made Dopp Bag

Everything from Hudson Made is produced in small batches right here in New York, using materials and processes that give this simple dopp kit a soulful, tactile feel. Out of all the great sneakers that have come from Converse brand collaborations, this one might be the most lovable — and it’s definitely the most V-Day appropriate.

Hestra Wakayama Casual Gloves

Hestra makes some of the best gloves you can buy, and these are modeled after a discontinued Hestra glove that a Japanese importer convinced the brand to start making again. Perfect for chilly morning commutes or winter nights on the town, these beautifully-made gloves will outlive you if you take proper care of them.

Polaroid Instant Camera

Whether your Valentine is a seasoned photographer or not, anyone can grasp the immediate joy of a Polaroid camera. Point, shoot, get back to the moment.

MAC 8″ Chef Knife

For the budding home chef, a serious kitchen knife is a welcome addition to the arsenal. This pro-level option from Japanese maker MAC holds a wicked edge, and the textured blade design keeps thin veggie slices from adhering to the blade.

Fellow Stagg EKG Kettle

Fellow’s Stagg electric kettle is designed with pour-over coffee in mind and preferred by most professionals for its consistency, ergonomics and obvious good looks. It would be tough for any coffee lover (or tea lover) to not love one of these.

Last Updated March, 2018: We’ve updated our guide to the best tactical backpacks with additional picks. Prices and links have also been updated.

Once it’s declassified, advanced military technology tends to drip down into civilian goods. It’s how we got GPS, the internet and the Jeep. But the relationship goes both ways, with innovative outdoor products and materials influencing what the military uses overseas.

The tactical backpack exists on a spectrum that covers outdoor-specific and everyday use. Like the warzone-ready backpacks worn by servicemen around the globe, today’s military-inspired backpacks are tougher-than-hell, and have organizational features that go far beyond the capabilities of ordinary backpacks. Heavyweight reinforced nylon, weatherproofing capabilities, MOLLE webbing and earth tone colors are common themes in these crossover bags. There’s no tougher catch-all for all the things you carry throughout your day.

Editor’s Pick: GORUCK GR1

Nearly ten years ago, ex-special forces soldier Jason McCarthy founded GORUCK with the simple conviction that he could build a backpack unlike any that existed at the time. He wanted a backpack that would be ideal for serviceman fighting overseas and commuters heading in for a day at the office. His answer was the GR1 Rucksack, a backpack that has become the standard-bearer for military-inspired everyday bags. The GR1 blends commuter-friendly features such as a padded laptop compartment and interior organizing pockets with a tough, take-anything construction. The pack has a plastic backing plate and a false bottom for extra protection and its weatherproof exterior seals up with silent zippers. The GR1 is also equipped with MOLLE webbing on the face and straps, and a velcro hit for your favorite patch.

Best Lightweight Tactical Pack: Prometheus Design Werx S.H.A.D.O.

Suspension, haul, access, durability, organized — these are the guiding design standards that Prometheus Design Werx applied to the S.H.A.D.O. (hence its acronym-style moniker). The pack leans more toward technical outdoor than tactical, but it’s not without fundamental military-inspired features such as strap-mounted MOLLE webbing and an oversized velcro panel for patches. The S.H.A.D.O. is filled with small features that make it a great everyday and adventure pack — a laptop sleeve, hydration compatibility, an external bungee for securing gear — but it’s useful component might be a massive, top-to-bottom zip opening into its main compartment.

Best Bug-Out Bag: 5.11 Tactical RUSH72

The “72” in its name refers to “72-hour capacity” — often considered the benchmark for standard bug-out bags. With its two side pockets and front admin pocket, it’ll hold three or more days of food, water, shelter and assorted survival tools. The front admin pocket neatly organizes smaller goods, and a sleeve tucked away in the main compartment holds a large hydration bladder.

Best Everyday Backpack: Triple Aught Design FAST Pack Litespeed

At its core, the FAST Pack Litespeed is an exceptionally versatile everyday backpack. Its versatility is owed mostly to its size (light, compact) and its organizational features. It is loaded to the brim with pockets. But the MOLLE webbing isn’t just for show; Triple Aught Designs makes a wide variety of modular attachments, allowing you to further specialize the pack according to your everyday needs.

The 3 Day Assault is the perfect pack for going off-grid. Made in the USA, its three-zip design allows easy access to your gear at a moment’s notice, and internal sleeves can integrate up to three hydration reservoirs. Side webbing allows for integration of a range of accessories, and the Futura Frame system keeps your back feeling great after long days on the trail.

Best Hydration Pack: Camelbak MilTac M.U.L.E

With just two simple pockets, the MilTac M.U.L.E is a dead-simple hydration pack built for fast missions.
