Alpine hydrogen supercar teased ahead of March 18 reveal

Despite the great EV rush across the auto industry, some are still exploring designs that use alternative fuels like hydrogen. Alpine, in a project with the Istituto Europeo di Design, one of the top transportation design schools in the world, has created a hydrogen-powered supercar that will be revealed on March 18. For now, it’s being teased.

Alpine has revealed precious little about the car so far. Called the Alpine A4810, it was designed in collaboration with 28 IED students as part of their Master in Transportation Design program’s thesis project. As such, the emphasis is going to be on design, with a low, rounded prow carrying on Alpine tradition. The brand’s signature quad headlamps take on a hexagonal shape rather than the typical round units, and a new LED lighting signature spans the width of the front.

Beyond that, we can see bulging wheel arches front and rear, a fighter jet canopy-style greenhouse and taillights that appear to extend from the rear bodywork. Oh, and the Alpine logo on the nose glows, too.

The stated goal of the project was to develop something as extreme as a supercar but with sustainability in mind. Interestingly, rather than a battery-electric setup, the IED’s description specifically calls out a hydrogen powertrain. It doesn’t, however, specify if that’s a fuel cell or a combustion engine that uses hydrogen fuel. The latter, as an example, would be something like Toyota’s Corolla-based hydrogen race car.

In the grand scheme of things it probably won’t matter too much, as this is primarily a design study. Alpine has also made moves to develop an all-electric sports car. It has about as much chance of making it into production as the Suzuki Misano Concept that IED previously designed. Still, it may serve as a visual guidepost for the company’s future vehicles. The Alpine A4810 will be revealed online on Thursday, March 18.

Alpine F1 for 2021

I don’t know about you, but I rather like the Netflix series Formula 1: Drive to Survive, I’ve seen both season 1 and season 2 and now I’m eagerly awaiting to start viewing season 3 when they release it on March 19 … and while I don’t normally watch the races when they happen, I do enjoy watching these behind the scenes series on Netflix.

So I might not be an avid F1 fan, but I’m a car guy, so I keep up with what’s happening anyway. Earlier this week I saw Mercedes releasing their new car for the 2021 season, the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance, the first car to use the ‘E PERFORMANCE’ designation. The new car will be driven by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, entering their fifth season as team-mates, a second year for the black base livery on the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team car it seems.

But today there is other breaking news, if you’ve followed the previous seasons of Formula One, you will have seen those bright yellow cars from the Renault F1 team … well, those are gone for 2021, it’s now called the Alpine F1 team, and their A521 race car comes in a blue, white, and red livery, which are both the official Alpine colors, but also the colors on the French national flag.

The A521 will use a Renault E-TECH 20B 1.6-Liter V6 engine, the car is an evolution of the R.S.20 that ran the 2020 F1 championship in the yellow Renault livery but with serious modification to the rear in line with the new aerodynamic regulations from the FIA, the new Alpine F1 will be driven by Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso.

The first-ever Alpine F1 Team car will make its on-track debut on March 3, 2021, with Esteban Ocon at a filming day at Silverstone Circuit, two weeks ahead of official pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit.

Alpine A110S

The Alpine A110 impressed everyone when it debuted with its beastly sports car innards. But it also angered stateside folks — Alpine still refuses to bring this ride to the United States. That isn’t changing for the more aggressive new flagship, the Alpine A110S.

Now on its third version, the Alpine A110S joins the A110 Pure and A110 Légende that brought back Alpine on the road. The most expensive and powerful of the bunch, the Alpine A110S has a very different character, says Alpine’s chief engineer.

“Its bespoke chassis setup makes it a very focused sports car. High-speed stability and handling precision are two of its defining characteristics. Although lap times are never a priority for our road cars, the new A110S is nonetheless faster than the A110 ‘s other versions.”

The 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine now boasts 288 ponies, up nearly 40 over the earlier rides. Torque is a beastly 236 pound-feet, sticking around its peak for 1,400 rpm — higher than the base A110. There’s a rear-wheel drive, like before, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. But there’s a new brake-based e-differential system that features a new cornering behavior.

The Alpine A110S has better high-speed stability, more responsive steering, and revamped handling precision, says Alpine. As for the styling, you’ll find dark-finished wheels, carbon fiber all over, and orange brake calipers. It’s even got an exclusive Gris Tonnerre matte finish paint option. Optional, too, is a carbon fiber gloss-finish roof, and so is lightweight Fuchs forged alloy wheels. More info when you hit the link below.
