Bentley starts testing the sold-out, 200-mph Bacalar roadster

Bentley took the limited-edition Bacalar from a sketch to a 200-plus-mph roadster in nine months, a shockingly short amount of time. Its engineers are now putting the first car through its paces at the same break-neck speed.

Although the Bacalar is based on the Continental GT, the British firm explained nearly everything the driver will see and feel is specific to the car. Bentley developed over 750 new parts for it, including 40 built with carbon fiber, and the roadster shares no body panels with other members of the company’s range. All of these components have to meet the same stringent quality standards as those created for regular-production models.

Bentley gave its team 20 weeks to fine-tune the first prototype (pictured), which it calls car zero. Testing started earlier in 2020, so the car has already been put through a wind tunnel and pushed to the limit at triple-digit speeds — it’s as stable and quiet as customers expect. Next, test drivers will pile on the miles to see how it holds up over time. They’ll then test it at up to 176 degrees, and the final step will be validating the electrical system.

Power for the Bacalar comes from a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine, which produces 650 horsepower and 667 pound-feet of torque. It spins the four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Bentley hasn’t revealed what it will do with car zero at the end of the testing phase. Production is scheduled to start in 2021, and the 12 examples planned have already been spoken for. Each one will be unique; buyers will be invited to work directly with the company’s design department to configure the interior and the exterior.

Bentley Bentayga Facelift: Is It More Luxurious?

2021 Bentley Bentayga Front

The Bentley Bentayga Facelift was revealed earlier this week. It leaked recently so we have had an opportunity to see

The Bentayga has been a massive sales success for Bentley, propelling the British brand from the red into the black.

20,000 of the first generation Bentayga’s have been produced since it launched back in 2016. Since then though, competition has arrived in the form of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the Lamborghini Urus and the Aston Martin DBX.

Bentley Bentayga Facelift

The first point to make is that the Bentley Bentayga Facelift only applies, so far, to the V8 model. Bentley has promised a Speed version with its W12 engine, together with the Hybrid it announced last year.

The standard W12 model seems to have died a death. The V8 version is a worthy successor though. Featuring the 4.0 litre V8 uprated to 550 hp and 770 Nm of torque.

In terms of the exterior design, the Bentayga gets a light touch refresh. The matrix grille is now more upright. The taillights are completely new and use an intelligent LED matrix headlamp technology.

Heated, wet-arm windscreen wipers are available with 22 washer jets in each arm. A 20 mm wider rear track helps fill the wheel arches better.

At the rear, the Bentayga gets a complete redesign. The licence plate has been moved down into the bumper and the tailpipes are a new design.

2021 Bentley Bentayga Rear Side

The luxurious touches are saved for the interior though. The Bentley Bentayga Facelift gets a new centre fascia and steering wheel, new door trims and all-new seats.

The rear seats get ventilation for the first time. Depending on how you spec your Bentayga, the rear seats also feature increased legroom by up to 100 mm.

The infotainment system is Bentley’s latest, featuring a 10.9-inch display screen with edge-to-edge graphics. This means wireless car play, all-new navigation with satellite maps, online search and other features.

Other features include an embedded sim, USB-C data ports and a wireless phone charger which is now standard.

New interior options for the Bentley Bentayga Facelift include dark tint diamond brushed aluminium trim and two straight-grained veneers new to Bentayga: Koa and Crown Cut Walnut.

Mulliner Driving Specification adds a new quilting design, and micro piping detailing is a new option for the seats.

What does Bentley Say?

Chris Cole, Bentley’s Product Line Director for the Bentayga says:

“With new Bentayga, our objective was relatively straightforward – to take the best and make it even better. To do this, we listened closely to our existing Bentayga customers, then addressed their comments to ensure the new model offers an even more complete, all-round proposition.

“New Bentayga reflects the truly sophisticated qualities and design make-up of other members of the Bentley family, such as the new Continental GT and all-new Flying Spur. It was already the pinnacle of the luxury SUV sector but now we have taken it even higher.”

What is the Bentley’s Competition?

Aston Martin by Q

The Bentley Bentayga Facelift occupies the top rung of the SUV market. The outgoing model cost 174,811 euros in Germany and the Bentayga facelift is expected to retail at about the same price.

Bentley has more competition these days than it did four years ago. Four years ago, the Bentayga was up against the Range Rover, the Porsche Cayenne, and not much more.

In the intervening period, Lamborghini has released the Urus, Masertai has the Levante, Rolls-Royce has the Cullinan and Aston Martin are soon to begin deliveries of the Aston Martin DBX.

The marketplace looks pretty crowded!

What’s Next?

Bentley Mulliner Bacalar Rear

Expect separate releases for the Bentley Bentayga Speed facelift and the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid facelift. Otherwise, the range shouldn’t see much of a change anytime soon.

In terms of Bentley’s future plans, electrification is the key. Bentley’s CEO, Adrian Hallmark recently confirmed that the pandemic has placed a strain on Bentley.

The firm recently announced that 1,000 jobs will go. Development on combustion engines has taken a back seat with Bentley expected to release its first fully electric vehicle in 2025, an electric saloon.

Mansory Reveals Bentley Continental GT Cabriolet V8

Mansory have been unseasonably quiet during the period of the Geneva Motor Show 2020. We can only assume that after the show got cancelled, they decided to hold back some of their planned releases for another event. What we did get to see is a unique take on the Bentley Continental GT Cabriolet V8.

In true Mansory fashion, the Bentley has been re-clothed with a carbon fibre body. The carbon fibre has been moulded into an extreme shape. The front gets a redesigned bumper with a brand new black grille and a new hood. The side receives new design lines and an extended wheel vent. The rear wheel arch gets green pinstripes which accent the swollen look.

At the rear, Mansory offers a new fixed rear spoiler, a new rear bumper, diffuser and quad tailpipes. It’s not massively extreme by Mansory’s high standards, however, it does leave a lasting impression. The mixture of matte carbon fibre and matte black.

It’s the interior where things get interesting on the Mansory Bentley Cabriolet GT Cabriolet V8. Finished in chrome oxide green, it is distinctive. It has been crafted from scratch with the colour applied tot he steering wheel, the great lever and the centre console.

The Mansory Bentley Cabriolet GT Cabriolet V8 gets a power boost too. An ECU module boosts the twin-turbocharged V8 to 640 hp and 890 Nm of torque. It now hits 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. The question is, would you want one?

Bentley Mulliner Bacalar Revealed As Mulliner Takes Charge

The Bentley Bacalar is the most exclusive and bespoke Bentley of the modern era. It was revealed today at Bentley’s headquarters in Crewe, England. It was due to be revealed in Geneva this morning, yet with the cancellation of the show, Bentley executives decided to launch the car electronically instead!

The two-seat Bacalar marks a return to bespoke coachbuilding for Bentley Mulliner, one of the oldest names in coachbuilding. It also marks a return to bespoke limited edition custom models for Bentley, a stark change from the mass-production Continental GT and the Bentayga.

The release of the new model coincides with an announcement that Bentley will utilise Bentley Mulliner through a new three-portfolio future: Classic, Collections and Coachbuilt.

The Bacalar is the first model to join the Coachbuilt sector. It is named after a lake called Laguna Bacalar in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The ‘Barchetta’ design “delivers the ultimate expression of open-top, driver-focused grand touring”. Top-down motoring sits at the heart of this two-seater.

The Bentley Bacalar uses an enhanced 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine producing 659 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Bentley has incorporated a rear-biased advanced Active All-Wheel-Drive System together with an adaptive chassis which uses Bentley’s intelligent, 48-volt Dynamic Ride System.

Bentley Mulliner Bacalar

Just 12 individual Bacalar’s will be released. Each one is designed, engineered and handcrafted to individual customers’ individual tastes. If you want one, tough, they are all already allocated.

The design uses the DNA and sustainable materials debuted in the EXP 100 GT concept car, launched last summer to celebrate Bentley’s centenary. The materials include ethically-sourced materials such as rice husk ash paint and 5,000-year-old Riverwood.

The Bacalar is also the first model to be produced in the world’s first certified carbon neutral factory. Each customer will get a bespoke Schedoni luggage to fit the rear compartment.

Bentley to Join 2020 GP Ice Race with Special Continental GT

Earlier this week, Bentley teased a photo of a modified Continental GT. The car sat on ice with multiple design additions and jacked suspension. Bentley has now released full details of its one-off Continental GT which has been prepared to compete at the famous GP Ice Race in Zell am See, Austria.

The special Bentley Continental GT will be piloted by Bentley’s first female racing driver, Catie Munnings. Bentley have a history on ice. The Continental GT set Ice Speed Records in 2007 and 2011. The Ice Race Continental GT hopes to emulate that success.

The livery reflects that of the Continental GT that broke the production car record at Pikes Peak in 2019. Underneath, the two cars are identical. They both share the 6.0 litre W12 engine with 635 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Both are capable of a 0-100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds) and a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).

Bentley have kept things pretty standard with a few choice upgrades. The Continental GT gets a rear roll cage, on-board fire suppression system, racing seats and harnesses. The Ice Race Continental GT also gets an increase to the nominal ride height to give greater ground clearance, arch extensions to accommodate a 15 mm increase in track width, studded Pirelli Scorpion Ice Zero2 tyres, a brace of Lazer high performance lights and a custom exhaust system from Akrapovic.

Bentley Continental GT Pikes Peak Edition Revealed

Focus at Bentley’s Motorsport division has been aimed at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for the past few years. The British manufacturer managed to secure two records in as many years, first with the Bentayga, and this year with the Continental GT. To celebrate its success, Bentley has revealed a special edition model, the Bentley Continental GT Pikes Peak Edition.

The limited-edition Bentley Continental GT Pikes Peak Edition will be replicated 15 times. The latest special edition model celebrates the outright production car record Bentley set earlier this year with the W12-powered Continental GT. It travelled the 19.99 km hill climb in just 10:18.488 minutes.

For the special edition model, Bentley has stuck closely to the livery of the original Continental GT challenger. This means a Radium by Mulliner paintwork and carbon fibre body kit as a minimum. While the Pikes Peak Edition adds nothing that you couldn’t already order on a standard Continental GT, it adds the colour and the ket to a package that collectors are likely to eat up.

Among the other changes Acid Green brake disc callipers, Pirelli P Zero Colour Edition tyres in Radium Finish and a Pikes Peak decal to the front bumper. In terms of standard specification, the 22-inch Mulliner Driving Specification wheels, finished in Gloss Black, have been added. An optional ‘100’ grille is available too.

Inside, Alcantara with contrasting Radium thread stitching is matched with Beluga secondary hide. The steering wheel features a honeycomb stitching design and a centre stripe in Radium. Carbon fibre fascias and door trim are complemented by a Piano Black centre console. The passenger-side fascia features a graphic showing a section of the Pikes Peak track, with five different graphics being used across the 15-car run, along with the record-setting time of 10:18.488.

The celebratory model is available to order from December 2019 but pricing is likely to be on request.

Bentley Working on Topless Limited Edition W12 Speedster

Bentley’s centenary year has been a little quiet by the standards set by other automotive brands. We have seen a few special edition model, a refreshed Flying Spur and a concept car in the form of the EXP 100 GT. yet there has been nothing truest special for the enthusiast to lust after. That might soon change if the latest rumours are to be believed.

Bentley is apparently working on a Speedster model, inspired by the Bentley EXP 100 GT concept, which would compete with the McLaren Elva and Ferrari Monza SP2. The rumours arrive through British magazine Autocar.

Autocar suggests that Bentley is working on the “ultimate open-cockpit sports tourer”. It is expected to arrive in 2021 as a two-seat barchetta-styled tourer. This means, no roof and a very limited, Collectors’ Series, production run.

The rumours are suggesting that the Speedster model would use a conventional petrol power plant. The 6.0 litre W12 unit is the prime candidate and should produce in excess of 630 hp. With the removal of the roof, the Speedster should prove significantly quicker than the Bentley Continental GT.

The Speedster model would be produced through Mulliner, Bentley’s special projects division. It hasn’t produced a bespoke vehicle since it produced the Queen’s state vehicle in 2002. The cost is expected to be in excess of £1 million.

Bentley EXP 100 GT Concept

This Is an Amazing-Looking Machine

Bentley has finally unveiled its EXP 100 GT Concept car and it’s simply stunning. It has the elegance of the company’s old cars but the technology and looks of a car from the future. Bentley says it’s looking ahead to 2035 with this car, and we definitely see it. If this is the future of motoring, we’re all for it.

The EXP 100 GT Concept comes with an all-electric powertrain that makes 1,340 hp and 1,100 lb-ft of torque. The model can do a 0-60 mph sprint in just 2.5 seconds. It tops out at 186 mph. While that’s very impressive what’s more impressive to us is that it has a range of 435 miles and can be recharged to 80 percent in just 15 minutes.

Stefan Sielaff, Bentley’s Director of Design spoke about the car a little bit as the company revealed it:

The Bentley EXP 100 GT represents the kind of cars we want to make in the future. Like those iconic Bentleys of the past, this car connects with its passengers’ emotions and helps them experience and safeguard the memories of the really extraordinary journeys they take.

In addition to its impressive powertrain and looks, the car also has an awesome artificial intelligence system called Personal Assistant. This system is supposed to preempt driver and passenger needs. There’s biometrics to monitor eye movement, temperature changes, etc. This is one advanced Bently, and we can’t wait for 2035.

Futuristic Bentley EXP 100 GT Celebrates 100 Years of Bentley

Bentley’s Centenary takes place today. The company is 100 years old. What better way to celebrate 100 extraordinary years than with a new concept car, indicating what lies in store for the upcoming years! The Bentley EXP 100 GT has arrived!

The Bentley EXP 100 GT is not something you will be able to buy from your local Bentley dealership. It sets out Bentley’s vision for the future of “sustainable luxury mobility that is autonomous and electric”. A few years ago it would have been unthinkable that Bentley’s would be powered by anything other than a big combustion engine. Now that is no longer the case!

The first thing that strikes us is the shape. Reminiscent of that superb EXP 10 concept we saw a few years ago, it is longer, wider and more dramatic. To put the size into perspective, Bentley’s Mulsanne measures just over 2 meters, the EXP 100 GT is a full 40 cm wider!

The concept is designed to present a vision of the Bentley range in 2035. One of the biggest features is an emotionally intelligent AI that allows the human element to be removed from the driving experience. It is called the Bentley Personal Assistant and it sits as a centerpiece of the main console.

Bentley Personal Assistant tracks movements, eye and head movements and blood pressure internally with sensors monitoring temperature and environmental conditions externally to deliver the ultimate driving experience and safety in all conditions. Five modes allow for individual characteristics including Enhance, Cocoon, Capture, Re-Live and Customise. Much like BMW, Bentley places a focus on hand movements to interpret commands.

The various modes alter inputs from the outside environment including light, sound, smell and air quality. Re-Live plays highlights of your journey.

Adaptable Biometric Seating can be configured to the driver’s every movement with biometrics playing a big part of the package. The driver sits surrounded by sustainable materials such as Copper Infused Riverwood provided by the Fenland Black Oak Project which supplies 5,000 year old wood, preserved in peat bogs, lakes and rivers. Embroidery is taken care of by Hand and Lock which supply British Military Dress uniform. Bridge of Weir supply the leather as is usual for Bentley.

In terms of power, Bentley’s concept uses a pure electronic drivetrain. Bentley’s concept for the EXP 100 GT includes a four-motor system with torque of 1,500 Nm. 100 km/h is possible in just 2.5 seconds and a 300 km/h top speed. Bentley believe that battery density will improve five-fold by 2035 and so, weight will be reduced but range will remain in the 700 km region with 15 minute charges capable of realizing 80 per cent capacity. Weight is said to be 1,900 kg.

It is clear that Bentley will incorporate elements of this design concept into its upcoming models in much the same way as it did with the EXP 10 concept. The release was accompanied by an announcement that Bentley plan to offer plug-in hybrid versions of all models by as early as 2023.

3rd Gen Bentley Flying Spur Revealed with 333km/h Top Speed

Bentley’s Flying Spur has today been revealed. Updated off the back of a successfully updated Continental GT platform. The mid-range sedan will get many of the same technical features alongside its new look. The Flying Spur is all-new with a new chassis, suspension, W12 engine and eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Bentley has torn apart the old model and started from scratch. The launch engine will be the twin-turbocharged W12 engine which was recently refreshed for the Bentley Continental GT. it packs performance figures of 635 hp and 900 Nm of torque. The limo gets a top speed of 333 km/h and a 100 km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds as a result. An entry-level V8 will be added to the range at a later date, followed by a V6 petrol-powered plug-in hybrid at some point in the future.

The engine sits within the MLB structure which also underpins the Porsche Panamera. All-wheel steering is key to the Flying Spur package, together with an active system that favours rear wheel drive until it feels that the front wheels need to get involved. Improvements have been made with the addition of Bentley’s version of the 48V electric active roll control system and a new three-chamber air springs suspension setup.

In terms of design, the Flying Spur is longer than the outgoing model with shorter overhangs. The grille is the first difference you notice. The Flying Spur does not share the matrix grille of its smaller family members. Instead, Bentley has fitted veins which shroud the matrix. The Flying B mascot has been redesigned with illuminated wings, it sits on an electronically retractable plinth. The design lines are longer and lower than before with the rear arches noticeably dominant.

It’s on the inside that the differences need to be felt though. Bentley has not disappointed. Bentley has fitted a new set of seats finished in 15 hide colours. The traditional round ‘bullseye’ vents have been moved from the centre of the dashboard to a slightly lower location and re-shaped to sit either side of the Bentley clock. There is plenty of diamond quilted leather, a new Crown Cut Walnut veneer and a range of 7 other alternatives.

The dash has been redesigned using the centrepiece of the rotating display. The main display is a 12.3in touchscreen with the option of a single display or 2:1 split showing the functions of the car. Three audio systems are on offer, a standard 650-watt system featuring 10 speakers, a Bang & Olufsen 1,500-watt system with 16-speakers and illuminated grilles. The top of the range option, unique to Bentley, is a Naim, 2,200-watt, 19 speaker system.

The Bentley Flying Spur is available to order, except in EU28 countries, Israel, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine where it will launch later this year. Pricing has yet to be announced.

Bentley’s All-New 2020 Flying Spur Said to be World’s Best Luxury Sports Sedan

A Big Sedan With Strong Performance

Bentley finally graced us with the appearance of the third-generation Flying Spur. The car features the same underpinnings as the new Continental GT and is said to be sportier than ever before. The company claims the car is the “world’s most advanced luxury Grand Touring sports sedan.” We hope that’s correct.

Judging by some of the additions to the car, we’d speculate Bentley is right about that. The car gets an aluminum and composite chassis, active 48-volt anti-roll bars, all-wheel steering, all-wheel drive, and Bentley Dynamic Ride for wonderful ride quality.

Powering the big sedan is a variety of engines with the range-topping one getting a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine. That powerplant puts out 626 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed dual clutch transmission wrangles all that power in a way the all-wheel-drive system sees fit.

The new Flying Spur can do a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 207 mph. It’s not all about straight-line speed, though. The company adjusted the weight of the car, too, which ensures it’s a better handling car on the road.

Inside, you get an obscene amount of luxury materials and technology, including luscious leather throughout the cabin, real metal and real wood trim, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, and remote control for the infotainment system for the rear passengers.

The wheelbase of the car was stretched by over five inches. Most of that length went to making the interior as spacious as possible. It also helps further smooth out the ride of this luxurious beast of a machine. We can’t wait to see one in the flesh.

Bentley Wants the Pike’s Peak Production Car Record

It’s Going to Use the Continental GT

In an attempt to set the world production car record at Pike’s Peak, Bentley will bring the Continental GT and let Rhys Millen pilot the car along the route, according to Carscoops. Bentley previously set the SUV record with its Bentayga, and now it wants the car record as well.

The Continental GT wouldn’t be our first choice to make the run. Sure, it’s an amazing car, but it’s also heavy. It weighs somewhere around 4,800 pounds. However, the car comes with a W12 engine that produces 626 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque, so that weight is moved easily. Also, the car has all-wheel drive, which it’s going to need because Pike’s Peak is one of the most challenging courses out there. It’s no straight shot up a hill.

The record for the fastest production vehicle was once held by a Land Rover Range Rover Sport. A 2014 model, to be exact. The Bentayga blew that vehicle away. It made the run roughly two minutes faster with a time of 10:49.9. The Continental GT should be able to crack the 10-minute mark.

There are many production cars more extreme than the Continental GT, but many manufacturers don’t bring their production cars to Pikes Peak. That means the Continental GT has fewer competitors and a better chance of claiming the title the company seeks. We wish them well in their efforts. There’s nothing like watching a Bentley racing along at high speed.

Why Exotic Super SUV’s Are The Way Of The Future

Less than a decade ago, the distinction between SUV’s and other vehicle types was clear. The introduction of SUV cross-overs brought about a new breed of SUV. An off-shoot of these cross-over SUVs came to being once sports car manufacturers entered the SUV market, creating the “Super SUV.”

The idea was to provide everything in one vehicle – a powerful engine, elegant design, luxury interior, and unparalleled performance with a 4×4 option. Lamborghini came up with the term Super SUV in 2017, when they released the concept of the Lamborghini Urus.

Following in their footsteps, other major sports car manufacturers also joined in.

The S-SUV Future

Range Rover Super SUV

Sports cars have traditionally featured two-seats, with some exceptions offering four passenger options as well. However, that’s not enough for some people. Super SUV’s are 5-7 seater vehicles, boasting powerful engines that make light work of the added weight.

Super SUVs deliver a faster, more comfortable off-road experience. Imagine sitting in the luxury of a Bentley while crossing the Himalayan plains, or cruising through the desert with a Ferrari roaring under you. As these super crossovers make their way into the mainstream, maintaining these vehicles also doesn’t demand much effort.

For instance, in Arizona, you can explore the Apache Trail in your S-SUV, or cruise the historic Route 66.

There’s no worry if you damage your windshield because SunTec’s Scottsdale windshield replacement crew will have you sorted in no time! SunTec Auto Glass specializes in repairing and replacing windshields and auto glass on exotics, supercars, and of course Super-SUV’s.

The future is all about convenience and this is precisely why Super SUVs are set to take over the automobile industry. An all-in-one option is an automotive enthusiast’s dream come true — spacious cabins, higher seats, and more driving options.

Eventually, it is estimated that future S-SUV’s will be more affordable, providing a luxurious and powerful alternative to sports cars and SUV’s alike.

The Lamborghini Urus

Lamborghini Urus Super SUV

Lamborghini’s first attempt at an SUV caused ripples across the automobile industry. A combination of Lamborghini’s classic style coupled with outstanding performance, the Urus starts out at $200,000.

Its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 delivers a whopping 641 horsepower on an all-wheel configuration alongside an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powerful engine boasts a 0-60mph time of 3.2 seconds!

The interior has a classic Lamborghini jetfighter-style design that has all the hallmarks of a luxury SUV and sports car. From leather seats to adjustable gauges, go from luxury to raw power in seconds, literally.

The Bentley Bentayga

Bentley Bentayga Super SUV

Bentley was looking to rock the SUV world and their introduction of the Bentley Bentayga blew everyone away with a top speed of 187 mph! With a price tag of $197,725, the Bentayga is a supercar in an SUV’s body – the very definition of a Super SUV.

A twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 engine under the hood delivers a robust 600 horsepower. Along with the eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the Bentayga goes 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

The entirely leather interior comfortably seats 5 people. The full-option Bentayga also offers 22-inch alloy rims as well as an absolutely ridiculous 1,950-watt, 20 speaker audio system and back-seat entertainment tablets.

The Maserati Levante

Maserati Levante Super SUV

Following the trend of Super SUV’s, Maserati came up with the relatively cheaper Levante starting at $77,475. Positioned as the reinvention of Italian luxury, the Levante is available in four varieties with individual engine capacities and features.

The base version has a twin-turbocharged V-6 capable of 345 horsepower. Maserati’s Trofeo version put out an unimaginable 550 horsepower but also costs an eye-watering $171,475. The all-wheel base version goes 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, rivaling mid-tier sports cars.

With a specific focus on the leather-intensive interior, Maserati has also splashed out on a fully automatic, state-of-the-art, all-inclusive infotainment system. While the Levante cuts corners on trunk space, it offers a world-class luxury experience.

Bentley 3rd-Gen Continental GT V8

What better car to give a V8 engine to than a grand tourer? Thankfully, Bentley knows full well that’s true, so its latest Continental GT coupe and convertible boast twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8s. At 542 ponies and 568 lb-ft of torque, they’re two of the highest-performing GTs Bentley has ever assembled. That and the fact that these rides feature improved fuel efficiency is sure to impress any coupe head out there, Bentley fan or not.

The Continental GT V8 coupe and convertible will zoom from zero to 60 in just 3.9 seconds. The convertible, meanwhile, does it a hair longer at four seconds. Both can hit a stop speed of 198mph. An all-wheel-drive system comes standard, although the car defaults to a rear-wheel-drive in normal driving situations. No need fret, though. That’s a deliberate failsafe from Bentley to ensure sportiness and efficiency.

Customers will get to pick from a number of selections. There’s a variant with wheels that include 20-inch, 10-spoke alloys, for starters. Some options go all the way up to 22-inch wheels.

You get a handful of extras, as well, like an improved neckwarmer in the convertible, LED Matrix headlight technology, and twenty-way adjustable leather seats. Onboard is a stunning roster of technology and interior options, from Bentley’s 007-esque Rotating Display to a 650-watt, 10-speaker Bentley Audio system, which comes standard.

Both the V8 GT coupe and convertible will start rolling out in the United States once the third quarter hits, then hightail toward the rest of the world starting in 2020.

Bentley Teamed up with Breitling for a Pair of Limited Edition Centenary Watches

In 1919, W.O. Bentley built his first car, which means his eponymous car company is celebrating a 100 year anniversary this year. We’ve seen plenty of brands celebrate anniversaries in interesting ways, but Bentley is…

2020 Bentley Continental GTC Review

‘We don’t believe that the Continental GTC has any competitors, it is completely unique in this space’ responded Bentley Chairman and Chief Executive, Anthony Hallmark. My question was not one to probe or test Mr Hallmark, but one that I asked to learn and understand more about the 2019 Bentley Continental GTC before jumping in and making my own judgements. Then again, my 25 year old judgements were somewhat irrelevant to the illustrious British brand – Bentley are the first to point out that the typical Bentley owner is typically in their 50s or 60s, China being an outstanding anomaly with 80% of buyers being under the age of 45…yikes, how’s that for a diverse demographic?

I had been shipped out to the Marbella Club to put the Bentley Continental GTC through its paces (tough gig) on what turned out to be a rather special days driving in Bentleys latest topless offering. The previous generation GT and GTC proved to be roaring successes, the introduction of the new Conti GT took the dynamics and breadth of ability of the luxury GT car to new levels.

As you would imagine, the GT and GTC are very similar. Both share the same 6.0-litre, W12 engine that churns out 626bhp and 664lb ft that will launch the GTC to 100km/h just a tenth of a second slower that the coupe – 3.8 seconds (expect a V8 and hybrid options soon). Also shared are the four wheel drive system, eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and 48-volt body control system that can be found in the Porsche Cayenne, Panamera and Bentley Bentayga, although Bentley say the calibration had been fiddled with to make sure your sexy topless Bentley feels a little different from a diesel Cayenne. The chief of Continental engineering went on to tell me about the painstaking hours that went into the gearbox calibration and how this is not just a simple copy of the PDK DSG transmission.

So what is the GTC like on the road? To find out, I embarked on a 400 kilometre day trip over a variety of roads and surfaces to see what puts the G and T into the GTC. Allow me to start off with that engine. I’ve driven the W12 Bentayga and can vouch for just how good it is in the SUV – the effortless character of the engine suits the truck well. In the GTC, however, it left me wanting a little more.

The Bentley looks fabulous, I felt that it needed an attention drawing engine tone to match the eye catching angles and do those giant oval exhausts some justice. Then you put your foot down and the sheer force of the torque punting the car towards the horizon reminds you why this huge great engine is still being used. It is remarkable, even more so when you consider the GTC weighs in at heaving great 2,414kg with the W12 pounding away until you’re doing 207mph/333kmh.

So the engine can deal with the weight when it comes to blisteringly fast straight line pace, but what happens when your grand tour takes you over a mountain pass? Remember that 48v system? It works astonishingly well and essentially counteracts any body roll using motors that prop the side of the car that would roll back up. Working in conjunction with the 3 chamber air suspension, the ride is sublime and the gargantuan weight is masked like a Donald Trump ‘grabbing’ episode.

When you start to increase speeds into some tighter, more twisty sections, things get a little less refined. As good as the systems are, hiding such hefty mass is undone by Newtons laws of physics and the Bentley starts to struggle – the brakes show themselves as being a major weak point. I cannot blame the poor things, regardless of how massive they are. Carbon ceramics are not an option…best take it easy and enjoy the breeze in your toupee after retracting the Z-fold roof in 19 seconds.

Speaking of enjoyment, when you are cruising and taking in the surroundings, as you should be, the GTC really does come into its own league of refinement and comfort. The interior is a masterpiece. Yes, you’ll recognise elements of the infotainment from other VAG products, but the physical switches, materials and all round ergonomics are second to none.

The finish on the woods, metal switchgear and quality of leathers are worth drinking in for hours. Set the heads up display to show you all you need, engage lane assist and active cruise control, prod the air scarf button to maximum and you’ll be glad that you were not sat in any other car on that stretch of road. It is a soothing experience, a memorable one. A Bentley moment.

Going back to the opening of this review, there are a couple of competitors that sprung to mind on the flight home – think Aston Martin DB11 Volante, Ferrari Portofino and perhaps Mercedes-Benz S Class. These could arguably all be considered competitors, but after spending a long day behind the wheel, it is safe to say that all of the aforementioned cars sit towards the sharper end of the sport vs comfort spectrum with the Bentley being the car with the wider breadth of ability. At €192,000 pre tax and options, it is a much more expensive purchase too. It really is in a category of its own.

Bentley Bentayga Speed to Launch with 650hp W12

Bentley are working on a Bentley Bentayga Speed SUV. To be honest, this news comes as no surprise. The British brand has seen success with its SUV and, as with all of its other models, is looking to produce a range topping performance model. The ‘Speed’ model is the natural top of the tree.

The rumours, which originate from UK magazine Autocar, suggest that we could see the Bentley Bentayga Speed during the first half of this year, possibly during the Geneva Motor Show 2019.

The super-SUV is expected to use the twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine with a range of electronic tweaks. Power output is anticipated at 650 hp with a sub-4 second 100 km/h sprint time and a top speed in the region of 306 km/h. Bentley will also work on the chassis of the Bentayga to ensure that the additional power does not have a negative effect on the chassis.

Expect similar increases in interior luxuries and upholstery as well as a series of updates for the exterior to set it apart from other models. A Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid model is also set to join the range in late 2019, offering the first hybrid power SUV in Bentley’s history. Don’t forget too that 2019 is Bentley’s centenary year so expect surprises along the way to celebrate!

2020 Bentley Continental GT Convertible

Bentley’s Latest Drop-top is Everything You’d Expect and More

Earlier this year Bentley released a totally redesigned Continental GT, which was the recipient of worldwide acclaim and fanfare. More recently – at the 2018 LA Auto Show taking place in late November – Bentley debuted the drop-top version of the aforementioned, formally known as the  Continental GT Convertible.

Overall the Continental GT Convertible isn’t far off from it’s coupe counterpart, which isn’t a bad thing at all. The convertible shares the same 6.0L twin-turbocharged W12 engine which produces 626-horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering power to its all-wheel-drive system. This allows the Convertible to achieve 0-60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 207 mph.

Due to the extra hardware required for the drop-top mechanism, the Convertible does end up weighing in at 5,322 pounds, which is about 375 pounds more than the metal-top. However, this is still an improvement over the previous iteration of the drop-top, coming in at about 250 pounds lighter and with a much more powerful engine to boot. Ultimately I doubt customers will find much, if any significance in the car’s performance relative to its weight, with such differences between the coupe and convertible being virtually negligible anyway.

Things remain identical with major chassis components as well, with the three-chamber air springs, 48-volt-controlled active anti-roll bars and enormous 10-piston and 4-piston calipers in the front and rear respectively.  Yup, that’s 28-pistons to make sure your modern day Cinderella carriage stops like a thoroughbred race horse.

Moving on to what really makes the Convertible different; its drop-top, of course. In expectedly Bentley fashion, the materials for the roof as well as its folding mechanism are extraordinary in themselves – the canvas Z-fold roof will be available in seven colors, with one being a ‘contemporary interpretation of traditional British tweed’ and can be raised or stowed in just 19 seconds with the car moving (up to 30 mph).

Designer-in-chief Simon Blake describes it best, remarking that “We’re Bentley. It’s fair to say (the roof cost) ‘a lot.’ Not just a couple dollars”.

Inside, the car remains opulent as ever with a rich serving of wood panels and high-grade leathers. The Convertible comes standard with 12.3” rotating touchscreen display, and a 2,000 watt Naim stereo is available as an option. Still important – but almost forgettable thanks to plethora of offerings on hand – are the standard neck warmers, and heated seats, armrest and steering wheel for those nippier top-down moments. Customers may commission a bespoke configuration with Bentley’s Mulliner division, should the standard catalogue be deemed insufficient.

According to Bentley, they are slated to begin taking orders for the 2020 Bentley Continental GT Convertible early next year, with the first deliveries to be made soon after. Pricing will start at $236,100 USD.

2019 Bentley Continental GTC Officially Revealed

Bentley have released the drop too version of its latest Continental. The release comes days before it is set to be unveiled at the LA Auto Show 2018. The Bentley Continental GTC is expected to perform very well, despite the fact it is the first convertible to be based on this particular chassis!

We recently had the opportunity to drive the Coupe version of the Continental GT. we can report that it drives very well, more on that in the next couple of weeks. The convertible version chips the roof. It is place sits a canvas roof. With the associated modifications, 160 kg of weight is added to the luxury gt car.

Both cars are mechanically identical, save that the GTC goes topless. The mechanism that Bentley use for the top is all new. It features a Z-Fold action, capable of retracting in 19 seconds at speeds of up to 48 km/h. The noise is dampened by 3 decibels over the predecessor with 7 different fabrics on offer.

A subtle difference is the lack of a rear spoiler on the GT Convertible. The rear lip is slightly larger as a result which helps generate more downforce. The rear is also subtly resculpted with the front remaining identical to the Coupe.

2019 Bentley Continental GTC

Under the bonnet sits the Bentley 6.0 litre W12. This powerhouse produces 635 hp and 900 Nm of torque. Disputes the weight disadvantage, the GTC puts in a 3.8 second 100 km/h sprint time, just 0.1 seconds slower than the Coupe. Top speed is pegged at 333 km/h. Pricing and availability is yet to be announced, however, expect a premium of 10 % for the Bentley Continental GTC and deliveries in time for summer next year!
