Campfire Defender Pop-Up Pit
Growing up, I always wanted a fire pit. I suggested it to my parents on numerous occasions, as I did with a pool and a trampoline, but they always vetoed it. Why? Not because it’s a safety issue. We were all Boy Scouts, my father included, after all. No, they didn’t want a fire pit because it would be a blight on their yard — they claimed it would be ugly! Also, it would get in the way of all our backyard soccer games and frisbee catches. It would be a magnet for stubbed and bruised ankles, they claimed.

Looking back, my parents might have been right. Maybe. But what if we got a portable fire pit instead? One that could be used and enjoyed, to roast marshmallows and tell ghost stories over, and then packed up and stored in the garage — that’d be a game changer, right?

Enter the Campfire Defender Pop-Up Pit ($90) by Fireside Outdoor. It collapses and folds up very similar to camping chair, and then it sets up just as easily. It’s lightweight (less than 8 pounds), so carrying from prime spot to prime spot won’t be a chore. And it’s made of a proprietary stainless steel alloy so it can withstand being heated and then rapidly cooled over and over again. Lastly, because the design of it allows for more airflow. the fire actually burns brighter with less smoke than a traditional on-ground fireplace.

The Campfire Defender Pop-Up Pit is available now for $90, but you can get an extra 15-percent of your order by entering the code USA15 at checkout.

Danner Mountain Light Hiking Boots
Save $114: Ask I child to draw a picture of a someone wearing hiking boots. She’ll likely illustrate footwear that’s somewhat clunky with some heavy tread, and if you give her colored pencils, chances are that boot will be brown. Task an adult with the same assignment and the result may be a more skillful reproduction (depending on the adult) but the image will essentially be the same — a brown leather boot, heavy tread; it’s the icon image that’s come to stand for the entire hiking boot category.

It also happens to be a very close representation of Danner’s most iconic hiking boot, the Mountain Light. That boot is a contemporary iteration of Danner’s very first hiking boot, the 6490, which was released in 1973 and quickly gained acclaim from numerous outdoor publications at the time. The boot was durable, comfortable and lighter than any other rugged hiking footwear at the time.

The Mountain Light continues the legacy of the 6490. It’s built with an upper made from a single piece of full-grain leather and hefty Vibram Kletterlift rubber outsole. The construction provides ample stability and support, and after the requisite break-in period, the Mountain Light’s leather conforms to the foot for a close fit akin to which only a custom bootmaker can provide. Treat them well, and they’ll likely last long enough to pass on to the next generation.

Right now, Danner’s Mountain Light hiking boots are on sale at Backcountry for 30 percent off, with plenty of sizes and colors in stock. It might be the cheapest way to pick up a pair (other than searching for the ones that Reese Witherspoon threw off of a cliff in Oregon’s Willamette Forest during the filming of Wild).

Note: Danner recommends buying a half-size down from what you typically wear for the best fit. — Tanner Bowden

Sony NW-A45 Walkman
Save $42: You can still buy a Sony Walkman these days, it’s true, but they aren’t the Walkmans of yesteryear that play cassette tapes. Instead, Sony’s current crop of Walkmans are portable high-res audio players that look similar to an iPad Touch. The NW-A45 Walkman is one of the company’s newer models — released in 2017 — and it’s also one of the most budget-friendly you can find. It has a built-in amplifier and is able to play 24-bit audio at 96kHz, which is significantly higher-resolution than what you’d get from a CD player. And it has 16GB of storage with a microSD slot in case you need more. For musicians, audiophiles on a budget, and or anybody who wants to take the first steps into hi-fi, this device is a pretty good upgrade from your smartphone.
