The BMW X4 will receive two new, more powerful engines when the redesigned compact crossover goes on sale in July in the U.S.

In addition to the new engines, the second-generation X4 moves to a new architecture — BMW’s CLAR platform — and becomes lighter, more efficient and roomier, BMW said Wednesday. The changes for the coupe-styled crossover are similar to those made for its sibling model, the BMW X3, last year. The redesigned X4 will be unveiled at the Geneva auto show in early March.

Debut models are the 2019 X4 xDrive30i and the X4 M40i. The 30i is powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine producing 248 hp, up from 240 hp for the engine in the outgoing 28i. The M40i is powered by a new turbocharged 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engine producing 355 hp. That output is the same as in the outgoing M40i, but torque is up by 22 pounds feet to 365 pounds feet in the redesigned model.

The X4 will have sportier riding dynamics because of wider tracks, a lower center of gravity and updated suspension, BMW said. Helping fuel efficiency is a 10 percent reduction in aerodynamic drag. Driver assistance features and connectivity technologies have been improved.

The redesigned models also receive a wide array of new standard safety features such as BMW’s Active Protection system. That feature initiates protective measures in an accident situation such as belt tensioning and the closing of windows and moonroof to a small gap.

Base prices are rising to $51,445, including delivery, for the new entry model, up from $48,595 for the outgoing entry model; and to $61,445 for the M40i, up from $60,245.U.S. sales of the X4 rose 4.2 percent to 5,198 in 2017.
