When Frank Muytjens, former head of menswear design at J.Crew, visited Tokyo in 2009, he was impressed with New Balance’s presence. They weren’t just in athletic stores. They were in forward-thinking menswear stores and small boutiques. They were offered in unique colorways that were geared more toward daily style than gym-wear. In particular, a pair of suede, basil-green 1400s caught his eye, but he couldn’t make the purchase because the Japan-exclusive style didn’t come in his size. After this experience, Muytjens initiated the first collaboration between New Balance and J.Crew in 2010.
Over the last eight years, the two brands have worked together on a range of exclusive sneakers. Initially offering only Made in America styles, the partnership has expanded to include more affordable sneakers made overseas. One of these silhouettes, the 520, is an updated version of a classic New Balance design from the ’70s. The New England-based footwear brand crafted the understated style in shaggy suede colorways exclusive to J.Crew.
