2024 Van Winkle Whiskey Collection

Once again, it’s time for the world’s most coveted bourbon collection to hit store shelves — if only for a brief period. The 2024 Van Winkle Whiskey Collection has been announced, meaning you’ll once again be able to test your luck at winning a lottery that allows you to pick up a bottle at SRP. As always, the six bottles in the collection are the Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10-Year-Old, Old Rip Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon 12-Year-Old, Old Rip Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13-Year-Old, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 15-Year-Old, Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 20-Year-Old and Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve Bourbon 23-Year-Old. Some good news this year, though, is that the two most prized bottles — the 20- and 23-Year-Old Pappys — are more plentiful than in past years thanks to some generous barrels, meaning you might actually be able to snag one. Retail prices, which are largely symbolic when it comes to Pappy, range from $130 for the 10-year to $450 for the 23-year.

Johnnie Walker

Johnnie Walker Aged 52 Years Blended Scotch Whisky

This extremely limited-edition blended scotch marks the very first ultra-rare release under the watch of Master Blender Emma Walker. Made from some of the brand’s oldest and most precious casks of Highland Single Malt and Lowland Single Grain Whiskies, its a rarified spirit that’s sure to find fans — at least those who can afford it — champing at the bit to try it.

Buffalo Trace Antique Collection 2024

Buffalo Trace’s most anticipated whiskeys of the year have arrived. The 2024 installment of the vaunted Buffalo Trace Antique Collection is here, and just as in years past, it’s sure to be a highly coveted release. As usual, the five bottles comprising the BTAC are as follows: Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old Bourbon, George T. Stagg Bourbon, Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey, Sazerac 18-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey and William Larue Weller Bourbon. This year, Buffalo Trace is touting the Weller as the standout bottle in the collection — something reviewers often do anyway — and it just so happens to coincide with the 25th anniversary of its parent company Sazerac’s acquisition of the Weller brand. Each bottle in the 2024 BTAC is sold separately and retails for $150 — but good luck finding any at that price. Due to sky-high demand and short supply, the street price will undoubtedly be many times the retail price.

a bottle of hibiki japanese whisky is poured into a glassSuntory

Hibiki 40 Years Old

The House of Suntory, the name in Japanese whisky, has just unveiled its oldest release ever. Hibiki 40 Years Old is a blend of whiskies from all three of Suntory’s distilleries: Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita. The liquid, crafted by three generations of master blenders, is made up of five different whiskies from seven different years: Yamazaki white oak casks from 1978 and 1983, Hakush lightly peated whisky distilled in 1981, Chita grain whisky from 1979 and 1981, and Yamazaki Spanish oak and Mizunara oak casks from 1980 and 1983, respectively. The exceptional blend is limited to just 400 bottles and is priced at an eye-popping $35,000 each.

tincup fourteener bourbonTINCUP Whiskey

TINCUP Fourteener Bourbon

The outdoor-oriented Colorado-based whiskey brand announces the third edition of the spirit that honors the highest peaks in the Highest State, with a portion of the proceeds donated to mountain stewardship. This year’s round spotlights 14,147-foot Mt. Sneffels, named after the Icelandic volcano Snæfell thanks to a crater-like area on the western flank. Aged 14 years (duh) in white American oak barrels, the bourbon has notes of vanilla, sugar cookie, caramel and syrup, with a medium-long butterscotch finish. The bottle is available for pre-order and rolling out to select retailers nationwide this month.

Redbreast

Redbreast 18 Year Old

The first new addition to the renowned Irish Whiskey distiller’s permanent lineup in over four years sounds like a fascinating flavor bomb that might cheaply be described as Nutella in a glass. True to Redbreast’s signatures, its a blend of pot still whiskey aged in ex-bourbon barrels and oloroso sherry butts while adding in whiskey aged in ruby port casks, which has previously been used in Redbreast 27. In Redbreast’s words, the result is a mature whiskey that “bridges the gap between our older and younger offerings” while offering a flavor profile “of dark chocolate, blackcurrants, and hazelnuts.” It’s now available nationwide for an MSRP of $250.

Widow Jane

Widow Jane The Vaults 2024: Amburana Wood Cask Finish

Brooklyn-based Widow Jane started The Vaults series back in 2019 as a way of showcasing how various wood finishes interact with older whiskeys. The latest in the series follows a burgeoning subtrend in cask finishing involving Amburana wood casks. Amburana is a hardwood native to South America mainly associated with cachaça production and has a reputation for adding “cinnamon roll” flavoring to whiskey (i.e., baking spice, vanilla, etc.) It’s not the first whiskey to mess around with the unique wood, but the 15-year-old, 99 proof blend might be the oldest whiskey we’ve seen embrace it. Only 4,000 cases will be available starting in October for an SRP of $250.

Angels Envy Triple Oak Bourbon on a purple stand surrounded by purple mirrors reflecting the bottle backAngel’s Envy

Angel’s Envy Triple Oak

Cask-finishing is the hottest trend in whiskey these days, thanks in no small part to the near-instantaneous success of Angel’s Envy. The brand’s Port-finished bourbon turned plenty of heads when it launched in 2011. A rum-finished rye followed in 2013. Over a decade later, a new entry is finally joining the distiller’s signature series. It’s a 92-proof blend of bourbons finished in French, Chinkapin, and Hungarian oak barrels, with flavors from the French Oak leading the charge. It’ll be available for sale at the brand’s Louisville, KY distillery on September 14th and then sold throughout the U.S. starting on October 1st for $75.

The Macallan

The Macallan TIME : SPACE

The Macallan TIME : SPACE is a whisky unicorn of the highest order. The ringed bottle in the image contains an absurdly old 84-year-old single malt scotch distilled initially in 1940. The whisky itself is a blend of two barrels, a first-fill American Oak Butt and a second-fill European Oak Butt, both of which were seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera and left to age in Speyside, Scotland. The smaller decanter shown in this image on the side celebrates the opening of The Macallan’s new distillery back in 2018. It contains a 5-year-old single malt distilled during the launch year. The bottle is shaped to fit inside the open center ring of the larger circular bottle, and together, they fit inside an oak sculpture made from alternate layers of American oak and European oak. Only 200 versions of the set will be sold by invitation at an undisclosed price, though it’s safe to assume it’ll cost over $150,000.

Heaven HIll

Parker’s Heritage 14-Year-Old Kentucky Malt Whiskey

Heaven Hill’s Parker’s Heritage collection is always one of the year’s most interesting and coveted whiskey releases. Named after the late Master Distiller Emeritus Parker Beam, who passed away in 2017, a portion of the series proceeds go to support the ALS Association. The newly announced 18th edition in the series is a 14-year-old malt whiskey with a mashbill of 65% malted barley and 35% corn. The whiskey was then finished in heavy toasted Cognac barrels for almost four months. Limited quantities of this delicious-sounding bottle will soon be available for an MSRP of $169.99 both nationally and internationally.

Jack Daniel’s Heroes Selection Barrel Proof Rye

The Jack Daniel’s Heroes Selection series is a limited-run whiskey series that celebrates veterans and active military personnel, with each release chosen “by heroes, for heroes.” The latest entry is a cask-strength rye with an ABV between 62.5% and 70% that was selected by U.S. Navy Veteran and Jack Daniel’s SVP general manager Melvin Keebler, and it’s only available in select military retail locations.
